No information booklet in room, no pad of paper, no pen. Parking very difficult - tight area on side of house crammed up against other guests cars. Must have a valet parking degree to make it work. Breakfast in cavernous restaurant crammed with extra tables and junk. Only open for breakfast. 80's decor incl. gold lame placemats. Cheap food including jam out of individual packets like McDonalds. All for a 4 star price. Very sad. The building itself is beautiful and location excellent. Too bad they couldn't provide bare minimum on basic expectations.

The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful and they were multilingual. Whenever we had a question about going someplace in the city they knew exactly how to get us there. The morning breakfast buffet at 15 euros each was very good! Lots of great choices to choose from. Coffee, teas in many varieties, pastries, breads and rolls with a nice selection of jams and jellies too. Scrambled eggs bacon sausages plus lots of fresh fruit to choose from. This is a really great hotel which employs some handicapped and some non-handicapped staff. But…read moreapart from the social idea, it is a normal 3 star hotel that provides all comfort you can expect in that category, with very nice and new furniture, modern TV screen and wireless internet. The breakfast buffet is also good for a hotel of such a small size. I arrived late in the evening (around 10pm), which means that you need to check in with the night clerk, who is not normal hotel staff but was also very friendly. In addition, I found a personalised welcome letter on my bed. The only minus was that the (non-handicapped) staff could not provide us with good information on how to get to a specific location by public transport. In the end we were faster to check it online by ourselves. But apart from that, I was very happy with my stay there and would stay there again whenever I come back to Hamburg because I really support the idea, but also because it is just a very good and comfortable hotel. The price was ok, too (73 Euro per night).

BUT The single room is more of a joke. It is so small that you cannot really place the suitcase. 1 electricity plug in the room which is really bad when you travel for business. Moving in the bath is difficult as it is tiny as well. Furniture are old and the worst thing is the bed. The blanket is too thin and the mattress is thin too so you feel the springs. The desk is shaky. Trash was not emptied from the previous guest. I am not trying the breakfast as it starts first at 8 which is too late when you have business appointments.

Upon arrival at the…read morehotel which is located right next to the rail and bus stations and many stores, restaurants and cafes, we were greeted by the manager who spoke limited English but whose friendly manner made us feel welcome. She checked us in and then advised that we would be staying in the 'villa'. She walked us a short way up the cobbled street to a private elevator, accessed only with a code (this made us feel very safe). We went to the third floor and entered another lobby area (also only accessible to guests) which was tastefully decorated with couches and tables with classic artwork on the wall. We opened the door to our room, the family room, and walked up a short staircase which opened into an attic room. The room sleeps 5 but there is plenty of space. Multiple windows flood the space with light and the floor is tiled throughout. The bedding was clean and crisp and the beds are comfortable. The bathroom is very spacious and the shower is a highlight; great water pressure and copious amounts of hot water. The day we arrived, our daughter accidentally knocked over one of the lamps in the room and damaged the glass lampshade. When we let the management know, they graciously forgave the damage with no charge to replace it. We highly recommend Hotel Hamburg Altona and will stay there again.
