Now keep in mind that this young man has never had a cavity. His last dental visit was around June 2022 at the Okaloosa County Health Department in Florida. He left with a clean bill of health. We returned to the Newcastle Dental Group on January 23, 2023, to fill one quadrant of the worst cavities highlighted by the dental assistant. Going from zero cavities to twelve cavities in roughly six months would naturally raise a red flag with any concerned parent. My wife and I spoke more about the situation and decided to have a second opinion. We chose to visit Dr. James Cox, D.D.S., in Newcastle. Dr. Cox's finding was documented as locating eight small cavities, four of which were compared to the initial x-rays taken by the Newcastle Dental Group, where he validated the four filled by the Newcastle Dental Group were cavities, and he had four additional cavities totaling eight not twelve. All the cavities are about the size of an ink pen tip. On the 22nd of March, we returned to the Newcastle Dental Group to have the remaining four fillings repaired. I informed the receptionist of Dr. Cox's findings, as he gave us a second opinion on the situation. I gave the receptionist the list of the four teeth that required repair. She gave the list to the dentist while the patient was in the chair. Minutes later, he was escorted back to the waiting room where we were told since we received a second opinion and questioned her diagnosis, "we should take him elsewhere." The hygienist told me the dentist told her she "will not go off of any other dentists' recommendations." Dr. Cox verified the same teeth she did, although he did say four of the teeth, she initially said had cavitied in fact did not have anything wrong with them. Any medical professional who maintains a reputable practice should, and without question, adhere to a higher ethical standard of conduct and welcome a second opinion from a fellow physician in the same field. This would only strengthen the patient's trust in their current physician. It has become apparent that her ethical values as a licensed medical professional are in question as she attempted physically alter teeth that did not require attention. Additionally, I personally spoke to three individuals. One current employee of the Newcastle Dental Group told me she is a "very aggressive dentist." The expression on her face and the way she said it, as she told me a lot. Clearly, she knew something was going on that was dishonest within that office. Anyone who is looking for a dentist, be very cautious of this provider.

I'm disheartened that I have to write this review but I take reviews seriously when looking for new…read moreproviders and I hope this will help others assess if this dentist is a good fit for them. I've been a patient at Norman Smile Center for over a decade and initially appreciated the care I received there. I have an AT gene mutation, which increases radiation sensitivity. Until recently Dr. Campbell sympathized with my special situation and that I have to be more careful than her average patient. I need to weigh risk-benefit assessment with everything that involves radiation due to how that can compound and break down my DNA. Although one x ray won't cause cancer, studies have shown it can compound over time in someone with AT mutation and can increase cancer risk in the long run. Therefore assessing benefit and risks is important in my case. Due to my circumstance, Dr. Campbell initially agreed to bitewing x rays every 2 years--aligned with ADA guidelines for low-risk patients like me (no cavities since approx 2015, which were my first ever and were 4 small interproximal cavities due to HG in 2 pregnancies). I appreciated her concern for my health and was grateful for her care. However on my last routine visit, without warning, she told me I had to get bitewings, just one year after my last set, or she'd refuse to see me at that appointment. I was blindsided because my dental history hasn't changed, and forcing annual x rays feels unnecessary and dismissive of my genetic concerns. I have four children and finding a time to visit the dentist isn't an easy thing for me so I had no choice but to agree to the x rays since she gave me an ultimatum that I agree to x rays or leave. I was also surprised when I was told I would need a panoramic x ray at my next visit in 6 months, despite no symptoms or issues justifying it. The ADA says panoramics should only happen when they'll impact care--not on a routine schedule--yet my concerns about both type of x rays were brushed off as I was handed a sheet saying how much radiation is in bananas and going outside. I wasn't as prepared as I should have been since this was sprung on me, but since then I've been made aware of the ALARA principle, a key standard in radiation safety that emphasizes keeping radiation doses as low as possible. Given my genetic condition, and the lack of clear need for a panoramic x ray, I believe following ALARA further supported limiting my exposure to dental radiation only when it's necessary. After years of trust, this sudden inflexibility and push for unneeded procedures (exposing me to extra radiation against my documented health needs) leaves me disappointed and looking forward to moving my care to new dentist who listens instead of issues ultimatums. Avoid this dentist if you value personalized care over rigid policies, because unfortunately something changed and you won't find that here anymore. -Ramona Heitt

The entire staff went above and beyond for me and my family. They went over all the financial part once we figured out what was needed and made sure I was ok with it before then even started. Also knowing that I can be sedated for my procedures puts me at ease. The doctors there are so friendly and have excellent bedside manner. I have made appointments for the kids now as well. For the first time in 35 years I can finally say I don't mind going to the dentist!

Dr. Potts is the best dentist I have had in the United States. My previous US dentist used cheap…read moreproducts, matched colors poorly, and did a terrible job of putting in crowns - he even ground off one of my natural teeth instead of fixing the placement of a crown! UGH! A German dentist fixed multiple issues when I lived there for a year in 2015. In 2016, I found Dr. Potts - and I am sooooo happy I did! He's a great guy and and excellent dentist who truly cares whether the color of a crown matches my own teeth. He makes absolutely certain that the crown is set into my gum line correctly. He adjusts _crowns_ to fit my other teeth properly, not the wrong way around. Dr. Potts is GREAT! And all the staff are fabulous, too! I have never had a bad experience at Dr. Potts' office.

However, I will not be returning because I was charged an "Infection Control Fee." I thought maybe this was usual practice, but calling other places, I've found that it is not. I'm so grateful to have found Dr Austin and feel like I can trust my dentist again. The receptionist is super helpful and I scheduled my child for a cleaning two weeks after my appointment and they were extremely kind, patient and took as many breaks as he needed and did a fantastic job!
