My dad-in-law suggested that we might check out a spot about 60 miles away in Minnesota on the Red Lake River that offered tubing. I've done the lazy river a few times at the Great Wolf Lodge, but I gotta tell ya... this sounded a helluva lot more exciting than what we had planned for the day-- so we loaded up the truck, gassed-up in Grand Forks, and headed across the Red River. After a little negotiation with Waze, we finally found our way to the Voyageurs View Campground and Outfitters... it sort of looked like an Outback Steakhouse, except there were more cars in the "lot" (OK, a large field of grass where the cars were parked), and there was a Canadian flag flying along side the Stars and Stripes. We walked over to a small window on the side of warehouse, paid some money, got our wristbands, and then walked over to an open bay where we were "outfitted" with big black innertubes. "They's the best for a'floatin' boy!" The company retrofitted an old school bus (by painting it blue, chopping off the top, and installing bench seats instead of kid's seats), and we climbed aboard to take the couple mile drive upstream to the put-in. The river flow had been really high a few days previous from intense thunderstorm activity, but the flows had backed off enough for us to go. I've done my fair share of stream fishing, wading in chest high in places like the Truckee River, the Yellowstone River, the Snake River... well, the Red Lake River wasn't quite as tough as a couple of those spots at different seasons... but it was kicking pretty good when we went. I had a tough time keeping my 6 year old son and my 79 year old father in law upright in the river, holding on to their tubes, and trying to wade out towards the middle of the waist-deep river to hide behind a little island before putting out butts in and floating the rest of the way. With a little perseverance and a pretty good scrape on my ankle from a submerged rock, we all made it. The first little "rapids" was the most exciting... just don't hit the bridge embunkment... and then it's a fairly smooth float all the way down. Along the way, there are some very pretty views that I got on my GoPro (I'll put them on here eventually)-- old riverside buildings here and there, but mostly nature. The sheer bluffs along the river are home to swallows who make their nests out of mud, and we saw a few turtles, catfish, wading birds and waterfowl. Somewhere towards the middle of the float trip, there is a shallow spot and a little sand bank that has formed an island... there, we were able to see dozens of Minnesota twenty-somethings wearing tiny little bathing suits, drinking plenty of beers, and participating in some sort of ancient pre-mating rituals. Breathtaking, I tells ya. Somewhere towards the end of the trip, I thought I'd get a little adventurous (if there is such a thing on a flat floating river) and try to go over a couple of little ripple/rapids. All I really did was hit my butt bone pretty hard on a submerged rock, but wasn't the end of the world. The river slows down a lot right at the end where you get out, and when we saw the bridge to signal the end of our float, we all paddled over to the left without incident. Overall, we had a great time as a family, the kids enjoyed the adventure, and we would totally do it again. Next time, I'm bringing a few more cold ones (you can rent a second tube for a nominal fee to hold your cooler!) And I might bring my aquashoes just for the entry, as it was a little rocky. But we'll totally be back to do this again some time.

From emailing us directions, to keeping the office open after hours, and ultimately hosting the entire campground at their home during a tornado alert, the owners always went the extra mile.

There are 20 campsites for RV's and tents with various amenities (water, electric, sewer) available. The park also has many picnic tables and a picnic shelter in place and restroom/shower facilities for those who need them. Our site is at the end of the row, near The Point, where the Red Lake and Clearwater rivers converge. There is a boat landing there as well. I must say, out of all the campgrounds we have been to on this trip (37, this is 38), this one is the most beautiful and peaceful!!! Lush green fields, lovely woods on the river banks, and rock cliffs on the other side of the rivers! The RV sites are very well maintained and a have lot of room surrounding each site! Each one has a firepit and new picnic table. Just a marvelous place to come for a while and rest and be at one with nature! And there is a beautiful golf course about two miles from the park!! I'm really not sure why there aren't more people using this park!!

It's very clean…read moreand well maintained and the park rangers patrol at night, giving you a feeling of safety (not that we needed it). The showers were free (woo hoo!) and also very clean. There is a paved trail along the river if you need to go blow off some stink. Or if you need a cold one after a long day, there are plenty of watering holes & restaurants just at the entrance of the park.

This area was a housing development. After the flood, everything was torn down and rebuilt to a State Park. What is so cool about this place is that it is within walking distance of some restaurants, movie theater, Cabela's, a place to get your hair cut, lots of things. If you don't tow a car and find yourself in this area, try to stay two nights just to "do the town." You are close to a bridge where you can walk to the North Dakota side. The "hookup" sites are pull-through but the sites are arranged parallel along the driving road so that someone may be in front or behind, but nobody is directly beside you. You get a lot of acreage with your site. Restrooms were clean. I had to pay $35 ($30 camping, $5 car fee) for full hookup. If you have the Minnesota Annual Pass, you don't pay the car fee. You pay the car fee even if you aren't towing a car, but they don't charge extra for a towed car. Little pricey for a state park, but cheaper than a hotel! TV reception via JACK antenna was difficult. It seemed that you got the most channels when you turned it the direction of the least blue reception lights. You get CBS, NBC, ABC, ME-TV, CW, and some good Prairie Public PBS stations. I'm surprised I couldn't get a FOX station. The park does not have Wi-Fi. I detected a "city Wi-FI" but was unable to use it from my site. The only thing I DIDN'T like was weasling my RV down DeMers avenue to get to this park. That is a busy street!

My family have been great renters from this resort for almost 20 years. This past weekend management had told us that a tent was $20 and a golf cart day rental was $50. At the end of our day she claimed that a tent was now $30 and golf cart rental was $80 and even charged us for 3 days of tenting when we were only there for 2. This isn't the first time this has happened. She will do anything to get money out of her renters. The playground is overgrown by weeds and grass. The boat launch and docks are deteriorated and the public restrooms are not kept up. If you have the chance, find somewhere else!
