I dined here with my family while passing through town from Los Angeles. We came here on a recommendation from the visitors bureau. We were looking for a nicer family restaurant in the historic downtown area. We came late on a weeknight, they were not crowded at all. I would consider this more of a nice restaurant that is fine for families than a straight family restaurant. They did not have a kids menu, which was fine because we ordered one entree and split it between our two boys. My wife had a fillet which she enjoyed. I have the buffalo fillet which was unique (in the US at least) and fabulous. Both entrees were served with great accompaniments. I could tell that much care was taken with the food. Service was great and they had an impressive wine list with a small number but interesting wines by the glass. We should have stayed for dessert, but were too full and eager to move on to our destination. If we lived in Saskatoon, we would return for sure. read more

The atmoshphere is decent, the food and service is not. Thier menu seem to be very poorly put togeher. They put un complimentary foods together in one dish. When I ordered my steak and asked for it Medium Rare.. the server said " thats hard to cook, the cook will do his best, but I cant take it back its not cooked the way you like".... WHAT? It was served with roasted potoates and Roasted Broccoli.... UM weird. So I asked or a diffenrt option than roasted broccoli...and she proceeded to tell me the cook as partnered the dish together to be amazing and he won't substitue. OK WHAT... first we learn that he cant cook a steak, now I am to trust his abilty to put falvours together right? I then said to just not worry about hte veg and not give me anything... she then said thats not an option. and suggested(quite rudely) that I order a different dish. After reviewing hte lack luster menu I decided to just go with the steak. It came to my table on a sizzling skillet(how 90's) and what do you know...the "cook" decided to be nice and substitue my veg. IT WAS BRAISED ICEBERG LETTUCE. So now i have this really poorly cooked steak floating in an ocean of soggy limp iceburg lettuce. Toying with it for a while I called the server over and said that it was un edible... but was promply told thats how the cook wants to protray the dish. I was very annoyed at this point. I sat thier and just playing with my food , lifted the "skillet" off the wooden base holder thing to find LAYERS and LAYERS of MOLD@ I dont reccomend this place to anyone! read more

Dinner was fantastic, the food was delicious. The only negative was the waiter never returning to our table to see how everything was. He appeared with our bill and then we never saw him again to pay it. We waited 20min and finally went up to the bar to pay it, we were hold he had went off shift. ?!?!? If you have business in the core, this is a good spot for a business lunch or dinner. After a recommendation from a friend, I decided to check it out when I hit town. The restaurant has two entrances, one on the street and another off the retail mall. The look is "old money", like quality steak houses of the eastern U.S., comfortable, serious, like you should be wearing a suit. The prices will likely deter casual diners, in favour of those not caring about the entree price. The menu as refreshingly different from many restaurants, with a variety of items not too common in other menus. Walleye, anyone? I ordered the Seafood Alfredo. Few dishes reveal the kitchen's competence than fresh, high quality seafood. The shrimp and scallops were perfectly cooked, mixed in with a rich helping of pasta, also nicely al dente. The garlic toast came in handy to sop up any remaining sauce. I'll mark this in my book as a place for a power lunch or dinner when on business. read more

This place is excellent! I had the salmon salad, the presentation was beautiful and the salmon was cooked to perfection. The salad was excellent. My sons split the steak tips and a cedar salad. 2nd Avenue Grill tries to be a little more unique with its menu without being too adventurous (ie: you'll see menu items unique to Saskatchewan such as Saskatoon berry glazed duck and bison steaks but you'll also see your run of the mill new york steaks and grilled salmon.) While presenting regional items is refreshing since it brings something different, the actual dish itself falls flat simply because the dishes are not prepared as well as the more generic ones The more generic items are a fairly safe choice. The steaks, pizzas and pasta are made competently. They taste good, there are no flaws, but by no means are they exceptional. The atmosphere is pretty good as it is one of the classier dining experiences in Saskatoon. This place would be good if you are looking for a more formal setting, but expect the food to be on par with Earls or Moxies (not that that is a bad thing). read more

Dined @ the 2nd Ave Grill last night. Warm, clean, comfortable setting. The waitress fumbled my order and brought me a slightly charrred plain 8oz filet instead of a 6oz Blue Cheese Filet, which I accepted on the grounds that I wouldn't be charged for it, which of course I was in the end. Steak was overdone, and side veggies were ridiculously salty. Rice Pilaf was delicious. In the end, setting was great, the food was average, but premium prices were charged, and the service was poor. Paid extra for the waitresses mix-up. 2.5 stars out of 5. Would not go back unless serious changes were made to the service staff, and pricing was brought in line with the food quality. Better of heading to Carvers or John's for a better meal at virtually the same price. read more

Worst service ever. We had called ahead and made a reservation for 100 people at 11 am on Monday January 18th. It took us about a half hour to even get water and then another 20 to order. We were never offered a top up on water or any drinks. At approximately 12:30pm the food started coming out. By the time the last table got their food it was 1:15pm. The first table had eaten and paid for their meals by then. We suspected we had been given a set menu to speed up food prep time, but it did not seem to help. If this timing was typical for 2nd Ave Grill then we should have been warned in advance. It definitely would have been a deal breaker. Since the bill was autogratted it was very obvious our server felt no need to work for her tip. She snapped at me twice for asking why the food was taking as long as it was and she snapped at many of my teammates from what I was told. She tried to blame the timing of the meal on us arriving late to the reservation (which, yes, we did arrive 15 minutes late), but if anything that should give the restaurant more time to prepare. I would never have left her a tip if it hadn't been included. Bottom line is, if you say you can handle a 100 person reservation then you should staff enough employees to handle it properly. If you cannot, then do not accept the reservation. Things for 2nd Ave Grill to note if they ever take a large reso again (which I do not recommend they do): -Staff at least one server per table -Put water on the table before guests arrive to speed up the wait time when ordering drinks -Check on the customers (I would have ordered a ceaser if I had the opportunity) -Don't yell at a customer and never try to blame their bad experience on them -Let customers know when a bill is autogratted -Work on timing the food better or give a warning read more
