'Light Space' offers a refreshing change to this with its minimalist industrial chic design, high ceilings and modern architecture. Situated in the Valley (on the border of Newstead), it is also an easy location to get to. I came here for the UQ Architecture 2011 exhibition and was impressed at how fitting of a venue this place was for it. The space was divided in 2 large rooms, one loungy room with a wide bar and the other area was as the exhibition space. The white walls and bright lighting really worked well in showcasing the 80+ student works that were being presented. Overall, this was an ideal place to fit all student works plus accommodate to the 200-300 people that attended the event. The size of the bar is very wide, which is practical when serving a large group of people thirsty for some free booze. The decor and layout of 'Light Space' makes the place very versatile. I can imagine it would be a great place to host a wedding or large party. The high ceilings, white walls and amount of space would make this a great place to shoot audiovisual material in. If you have a medium-large sized function/exhibition/party to organise, or need a studio space for a photo shoot, you might want to look into hosting it at Light Space.

I was fortunate to experience the space in full swing over the weekend at Pinot Palooza, an event that brought together local wine makers, punters and food vendors. By virtue of seeing the pre-event organisation on the day I sense this is a tightly run ship and for personal events like weddings and such, this is what you want. There's plenty of scope to create the style and atmosphere you want in the area with two large hall-like spaces. There's office space above that is used by an ecclectic group of creative businesses including photographers, a media agency, architect and online fashion store. And as a little tid bit; there's also a bee hive on the roof by Bee One Third. Nifty huh?

It was designed by George Henry Male Addison and was built in 1891 after the original building that stood there was destroyed by the fires of 1888. It is if you ask me, one of the most beautiful and opulent landmarks of inner city Brisbane. The Old Museum stands out like a glimmer of hope in the midst of a concrete jungle. The modern and renovated Royal Brisbane Hospital is just over the bridge, the Ekka showgrounds are just underneath it, and the more industrial zone of Bowen Hills is directly behind it. If you stand back and take in the entire landscape, it becomes easy to see how far Brisbane has changed through the ages. Quite frankly, I like the Old Brisbane better than the new one if the Old Museum and other heritage listed buildings of her kind are anything to go by. The Old Museum is now a venue for a multitude of events. The Finders Keepers markets are held there biannually, international and local musicians play there frequently (Amanda Palmer! Beth Orton!), travelling showcase events like the Bohemian Masquerade Ball have held their Brisbane leg of the tour there, and the Burlesque Bombshell Academy holds burlesque dancing workshops there. Holy dooley. The Queensland National Ballet, Queensland Police Pipes and Drums, Queensland Youth Choir and Zen Zen Zo Phyiscal Theatre are all tenants of the Old Museum too. Even though there's a seemingly endless line of groups and people in and out of there all the time, you can hire the venue space. There's a lot of information on the website, and it appears that all you have to do is write them a proposal of what you'd like to do there, and when, and they'll decide yay or nay and get back to you. When I was a little kid, my mum took me for a picnic on the grounds of the Old Museum. With all of my traditional girly notions still intact, I told her I wanted to get married there one day. Apparently I got very excited about the whole idea, and when she told me it had closed down and I couldn't have my wedding there, I wailed. Well, look, some 20 years later, and the dream place of my nuptials is a venue for hire. Now all that's left is for me to find that poor bastard who'd put up with me 'forever more'.

(Perfect for those languid summer afternoons and eve's I recommend grabbing some friends and heaving a picnic basket to the lawn.)

After pushing a bunch of tables together we were happily seated and ordered our coffee and breakfast. The menu was pretty standard with staples such as eggs benedict, omelette and muesli. I ordered the grilled haloumi and thought it was delicious, but some of my friends weren't happy with their meals like the omelette that was more mushroom than egg. Oh well, you can't please everyone but I enjoyed my meal. The coffee was good and our bill was very reasonable considering I had always considered Eve's a high-end restaurant previously. One thing about this place is that the view over the river is stunning. It's got a great relaxed vibe to it, which is probably why it is hugely popular for functions and weddings. It was a lovely dining experience and I'd definitely like to go back to see what they offer for lunch and dinner.

The meals arrived after a thirty minute wait to much rapture - the wait staff explained the confit was a complex meal to prepare and apologised for the wait profusely, but they needn't have bothered. The succulent flesh and amazing flavour of the duck leg completely justified the wait time. I savoured every moment of what I can only describe as "the perfect dish". Lychee was meant to be eaten with red curry sauce, and jasmine rice provides the perfect fragrant partnership. My partner was impressed with his market fish but lamented that he should have gone with the Eye Fillet - an unfortunate case of post-order remorse. We both agreed that we will definitely be coming back to this gorgeous location. Eves on the River feels so homely and comfortable but in a strong and confident way. It's a picturesque, quaint, brick hall that's conveniently situated right on the corner of Wynnum Road and Thynne Road. It's easy to get to by car or by public transport. Currently, the hall is used regularly by Brisbane Goju Karate who offer lessons there on a weekly basis. Yoga classes are held there as well. The hall also hosted a flood fundraiser in the past year where local bands and acts came to perform. It's not an excessively large space, but it's all the basic amenities, and it would be perfect for small community events. If you've got a new project that you need a space for, call these guys and enquire about hiring the hall. It's got a lovely, subdued character about it, and it's just begging to be used.
