I was updated the same day of any concerns or progress that involved my son. I would also get weekly updates and priceless wisdom that helped me grow as a parent. They are very nurturing, caring, and protective childcare providers. The children are seeing a Mom and Dad system throughout the day. They are a great team with excellent qualities and work wonders. We received tons of pictures everyday of our very happy boy. They focus their attention on a small group of children, making sure all children are taken care of and each child receives the attention required for proper development at the critical first 5 years of life. We were very fortunate to have found Zena's Daycare through our search, in the beginning, as any new parents making a difficult decision, desperately researching where you are leaving your child for the entire day, while you are at work. Mrs. Perez answered all my questions until I was completely clear, as I was concerned of my daughters behavior for the first few weeks. My 4 year old came to this facility from a home daycare and was not used to rules and sharing with others. She struggled at at the beginning but with the tips the lovely staff advice me to work at home with her( I asked for advice as I'm a first time parent) it worked like a charm. Within two months she made an outrageous change in her discipline and shared with others. She would even take a stuff animal to share and pass around during circle time. My daughter enjoyed all the activities they did daily and told me on the way home the story that Ms. Hernandez read to her in the classroom. She told me an explicit timeline of her routine trough the day and always seemed excited to go to school the next day. Yey!! I loved their reminders for certain events they had for example crazy hair day or pijama day, everything was well organized so there was no way you'll forget any event or closure for certain holidays. Sandra gives out a calendar or emails you during the week to remind parents. Overall downtown scholars has a great staff that would always greet me with a smile and I can tell they enjoy their job and being around our kids. The children were always smiling, there was art on the walls, they were genuinely cared for while learning through play. It says a lot when someone can be so attached to a school/teachers in less than a year of attending. Terrible - As of Tuesday March 20th, all parents learned there would be new management. No notice to this change by the Owner/Licensee of DTS, Armando Delgado. Under the new director Ms. Chia, I cannot say the same care would be in place. Ms. Chia runs Sunflower Montessori (and several others) across the street which I visited prior to choosing Downtown Scholars. Ms. Chia was cold, rarely smiled, no art on the walls, the kids were not happily enjoying themselves, and the place smelled like stale urine. In the yard, an older woman was 'watching' the kids play on the playground from 8 ft away, not interacting with the kids. These are the people currently running Downtown Scholars as of this management change. I also learned that Ms. Chia has had 4 citations in the last 3 years of her care at Sunflower. This information can be obtained by calling Community Care Licensing Board at (408) 324-2148 There is a difference in theory of 'play-based' learning and 'Montessori' learning centers. I doubt this school will be able to remain a 'play-based' school. The business owner/new management showed no empathy for the kids during this business focused transaction. I would not recommend taking your child here with all these changes.

Well, lucky for us, there isn't one thing we don't LOVE about Michelle's daycare. Michelle and her co-teachers, Carolina and Paz, are just absolutely there for the right reasons. They love the kids and treat the kids, and parents, with such respect. They have been so patient with helping our daughter, who was 9 months when she started coming, establish a routine and feel safe and loved and now she can't wait to get out of the house in the morning to go to school! From nurture, to teaching moments, to fun and learning, they have it covered here. It's a great place both inside and out. The kids get to play outside, take walks and go to the park for games for at least a couple of hours a day. The teachers are all great about putting sunscreen and hats on each and everyone, every single day! They tell you how your baby ate, behaved, slept and any other important information we miss while we are at work. They make it easy. The hours of operation are good too. I highly recommend getting on Michelle's list well before you are going into labor!!! And if she has a spot, like we got one, consider yourself lucky!

In the beginning, they allowed for two naps and then transitioned him to one nap around 15 months old. Everything about the quality of care is really great. The one thing that I do really appreciate is the family atmosphere. There is one designated kid helper everyday. She re-enforces that the older children should be helpful and considerate of the younger babies. It creates a really good environment for caring and sharing among the children. Her level of discipline is appropriate and I have witness many times when she re-enforces good behavior among the kids. Each day she shares a fun story about my child whether it be funny or something new. When my son comes home, we can tell he was well stimulated throughout the day. I never had to worry about them when they were at the daycare because I knew they were in great hands. Sherry and her team of two teachers worked together to make sure they were well-cared for, and provided them with lots of individual attention. Sherry runs a small daycare with a provider to child ratio of 1:3, and is flexible with providing early morning and weekend care whenever we needed it. My daughter and son ate so much better at the daycare than they ever did at home! Sherry is also a very kind-hearted person. She came to my home several times on the weekends to help me with my daughter and to see me when I was postpartum, all without expecting anything in return. When I was in a car accident, I called her and she came and picked up my children and took them to her daycare so I could deal with my car being towed and repaired. She goes above and beyond and treats people as if they were family. I absolutely trust Sherry and her daycare. My daughter and son have never had any concerns while they attended.
