Yes. One bad egg can ruin it for everyone. Brought my toddler there for a cut today. Would've been his fifth cut if I did not walk out. I believe the guys name was Rob (if he even gave me the right name) I can't remember because I was too pissed off. Right away when I asked for him not to be buzzed I wanted a scissor cut the back n forth started. Told me he was not able to use scissors on a kid because they move too much and it's dangerous. (I get the worry) Mr Pete did his first haircut (who was awesome) he used scissors no problem. Then two other awesome ladies did his hair as well no issue. My son definitely felt the negative energy already and acted on it. I should've trusted HIS instincts immediately. He knows who he doesn't like. Then he proceeded to tell me my son had too many cowlicks. He has ONE in the back of his head which is a swirl most boys tend to have. The rest I explained is because he went to sleep with wet hair and his natural wave took over. Starts cutting my son's hair without even a spritz of water. Gets annoyed when my son drops his binky. I then sat him on my lap and tried that way, and the frustration grew. I asked him can you still cut it fairly long if you used the buzzer and he replied that's what I've been trying to tell you. Um, sir, no you weren't. You had negative energy from the start and then told me I was being rude since I arrived. Anyone that knows me knows that is not my MO. I took my son and left. Now he has a wonderful cut. That was done WITH SCISSORS BTW! My son didn't like your attitude and neither did I! Never going back! Also stop smoking in your building it smells putrid in there. I'd love to give the others who we've worked with 10 stars but this jerk deserves zero. If you don't like your job do something else. read more

We took my son for his first haircut , at first he was scared but Mr. Pete knew exactly how to keep him calm . On top of that Mr. Pete knew exactly how to style my son's hair, he looks great! Another added bonus to our visit was the friendliness of the whole staff ! Everyone who works there was so nice to us. We will be back for many years to come for our son's haircuts! It depends on who you get - you can't go wrong with the owner Pete but you'll need an appointment or plan to wait. He's quick but does an amazing job. Most of the staff is great but I do find turnover is pretty high so if you liked someone, there's a good chance they went somewhere else 6 months down the line. Some of the barbers were either really slow or just mediocre five to ten years ago but seems the latest batch is much better. Prices have gone up quite a bit over the past four years relative to other places but still in market range. It's a little more jarring here because prices had previously been on the lower end. Lastly the ambiance is pretty good - that is, they've usually had interesting stuff on the TV so that's a small plus! read more

Absolutly destroyed my hair. asked for a 5 ontop skin fade on sides with a shape up and trimmed beard. lady gives me a whole sh*t show that i have to now go pay 45-50$ to another barber to fix my hair and beard thanks. i asked for my eyebrows to be done she left them alone and proceeds to add a slit to undone eyebrows. never shaped me up, nothing. We took our son here to get a haircut the last week in February. The previous haircut (NOT done here), the barber had cut his hair so unevenly and it was growing out terribly. Little dude needed it to be fixed, ASAP. We looked up places near us, and thankfully found this little gem. Called ahead, and they said they had time immediately so we drove on over. There were only two people working there that day, and the gentleman who I spoke with on the phone ended up cutting our sons' hair. I believe his name is Carl, but please forgive me if I am wrong. His chair is the first one when you come in on the left. He listened to what we wanted, was so good with little man (aged 4) and had such a natural rapport with him. He made the haircut such a breezy process and FINALLY his hair was even again! It was a perfect cut, and very reasonable ($13). It has been two months, and it is growing out the way it should be. We will be back, once the world is back up and running due to current quarantine but I really wanted to show 5 West some love! read more

Great local regular barbershop finally found close to where I live... my other barbershop i was going too raised there prices by $5 too high in my opinion and always a long wait even though they did good haircuts but wanted a more old school regular barber shop.... so after a search and reviews on Yelp I brought my son here a few months ago and Jeremy did a very good job considering my son is fidgety at times and I came back today for myself and Jeremy nailed my hair cut a skin fade and really took his time and to make sure I was happy with how it was coming along... $20 for my cut in this current economy is very reasonable compared to a lot of other hair cutting places plus a nice bonus to have the Mets game on the tv when I walked in as my son was happy to watch on the couch as I got my cut! Ever since I was a little kid I was nervous about getting haircuts and looking silly so I was very picky and particular about barbers so I would grow my hair long. Now In my older age (24) I've changed haircut styles but am still picky and particular about getting my haircut and recently my barber moved so now it was time to find a new one. I found 5 west barber shop on google and figured hey let me try them out. Peter is a great guy with a great sense of humor and everyone else in the building is very social and welcoming. Growing up in NYC I was always overly particular about who cuts my hair. I've tried a bunch of places in Long Island but 5 West is the best by far. Since finding this gem I refuse to go elsewhere. In a town that oddly had more barbershops than restaurants that aren't Chinese or pizza, this one stands out as one of the best. A no nonsense shop with 4 regular barbers who are there day in a day out. Pete the owner sets the tone for the place and his fellow barbers follow suit. I've only had a few barbers over the years and Mike from 5 West is one that does an amazing job. My preschooler is sensitive when it comes to getting haircuts and he would cry wherever I took him. Then we started seeing Pete. He is AMAZING with kids. Such a nice guy and so soft spoken. He shows and explains the tools he's working with (ex: the buzzer, scissors, etc.) to your child before using it on them so they feel more comfortable.
