We took a few spontaneous stops to view gray whales, humpbacks, and seals on the way to Goddard Hot Springs. Xander is knowledgeable about the history of Sitka, as well as the wildlife and migration patterns that we were curious about. Before disembarking for the hot springs he drew us a map and made some recommendations for our group. On the way back to the boat, I GOT ENGAGED and Xander's excitement for us was memorable. I literally thought he was joking and laughed. No joke - he pulls into two spots and tells us random stories the entire ride. At our destination he says - $20, plus $10 that will be $30! What a racket - we had no choice in the matter and he just expects he can charge $10 extra that we did not want! We took a $2 per person bus ride (stop right by the Fortress of the Bear) on the way home - didn't want to call this taxi ever again.

Since we got off in the morning hours, this also put us in front of all the crowds to visit Fortress of the Bear. Michelle also took us to places that the cruise line tours don't go. Since she lives in Sitka, she can show you and tell you many things that those big bus driver's cannot. She took us to places where we could get great photos and see areas that were clear of people, showed us different neighborhoods and areas of town, this made for such a nice relaxing morning. Michelle then dropped us off downtown so we could walk around and do a little shopping. We wound up taking the bus back to the cruse port. Michelle can take you back to the cruise port though, if you choose. She is very flexible and will work with you to provide the type of tour that will work for you. What I liked most about this tour is that my dollars when to support the local economy and Michelle also gave us some tips on who we could purchase items from that would also support the local economy and people. If you are on the fence about booking, it's worth every penny to book Michelle for your own private tour of the island. You won't regret it.

Very easy to follow instructions ;) We boarded the cargo mini van and Brett, our tour guide for the excursion began our Sitka adventure! The tour included visits to the Alaska Raptor Center, Fortress of the Bear Sanctuary, and the Sitka National Historical Park, featuring the iconic totem poles. Each stop offered a unique glimpse into the natural beauty and cultural richness of this incredible region. The Bear Sanctuary, is the highlight of the tour. The sanctuary is dedicated to the rehabilitation and care of orphaned and injured bears. Seeing these magnificent creatures up close was awe-inspiring. Our final stop was the Sitka National Historical Park, renowned for its impressive collection of totem poles. Walking through the park felt like stepping back in time. The totem poles, each with its own story, stood as silent sentinels of the Tlingit people's rich heritage.
