I happened upon Tubby and Coos completely by accident as I had set out to visit one of the neighboring shops and they caught my attention by their PSA sign out front. I walked in the store, and the Sci Fi nerd in me just jumped out as the first thing I saw was Doctor Who. There are a great variety of other books as well, many that appeal to the YA audience as well as the alleged adults of the crowd. I actually ended up picking up a book on the history of the Carnival Krewes of New Orleans, so there really is a bit of something for everyone. The store is small, but there are two stories of goodies contained therein so make sure you take your time to enjoy it all.

It's a quaint operation with a big heart. Bean put a lot of work into the effort, building a box office, providing refreshments including wine, a crawfish spinach artichoke dip, and hot dogs, chips, etc. for the kiddos. :-) The menu mixture threw me off for a minute until I thought about young theater-goers. The theater puts on good productions which normally win praises from people who truly appreciate seeing local talent at work. Bean's dedication to providing that venue for local actors and playwrights, who are mostly African-American, has been a joy to follow. His acting school component provides an opportunity for amateur thespians to learn and sharpen their skills. Most impressive is the effort the Anthony Bean Community Theater has put into the little things which make the theater experience enjoyable. The chairs are nicely covered, the surrounding curtains and risers make you forget that you are on the second floor of an old school, and (best of all) the lighting and sets are very good.

I've been to Ashé for a few things but always leave feeling I need to spend more time there…read more Fashions, Afrikan art or jewelry on sale, art gallery and meeting place; this is a real cultural center. Although the website is wrong on Yelp, I try to keep up with the Events Page https://www.ashenola.org/events. The staff is kind and knowledgeable. There's street parking and a lot. Most recently I was there for an art exhibit: In the Spirit of Black. Excellent. Varied artists, traditional dance, community elders and installations at the Ashé Theatre. Ashe Cultural Center is a true gem for the community and visitor. Stop by, stay a while, learn love or buy something and donate!

In my 12 days in the Big Easy, I had the opportunity to watch a documentary on the Loving v. Virginia case here as well as pay homage to Shakor White and his amazing artwork. I even took my students to his art gallery in the French Quarters. Thank you to Rachel and the welcoming staff for helping me sort through the boutique dresses and jewelry that I ultimately bought for my mother back home in Texas. I love this school…read more Let me start out by saying my experience with this school has been purely on a volunteer/mentoring basis. From my experience at the school I really enjoy and admire the teacher/student involvement. They really want to see their students achieve and set up experiences, opportunities and resources to ensure their success. This includes, mock interviews, presentations, mentoring options and more. This school has done a great job creating an safe environment that's inclusive. Even from conversations with students on campus, specifically the ones deemed "different" they feel welcomed and accepted by their peers on this campus and it's one of the main reasons I love this school. The actual school is currently being built so they are in this professional hardcore trailers that are actually set up in such a way that created a pretty great educational environment.

We bought and paid in full with cash for a couple things at the gallery that were too large to carry home on the plane and asked if they could be shipped. The sales lady said no problem and we arranged that they would be shipped COD as their credit card machine was down and they had no way to weigh the shipment at that time. That was in January and we are still waiting for the shipment. We have tried all the contact info we have but have not received a reply and can't get ahold of anyone by phone. We would love to hear from anyone at Louisiana Artworks concerning this, but until then I can't recommend making art purchases with them.

My volunteering consists within the realms of artistry and creating beautiful rain barrels. Learning so much about water conservation, the importance of stepping up as a human and what my small effort can do to educate others and provide sustainability for future generations. They serve the Greater New Orleans area with free seeds, gardens, and light bulbs. All this for free and to serve the community at large! They even offer free classes to ensure you're not going to kill your plants! They come to your house and build a raised garden! And fill it with FOOD! What more do you need?! I can't believe more people aren't knocking down their door! I just grabbed more seeds than I've ever seen at Home Depot! And already scheduled my appointment for a garden!
