My first teacher holds a Master's Degree in Music, and my second teacher has a PhD and is a Professor, both with over 10 years of experience. However, due to schedule conflicts, I had to find a new teacher. Being particular about my choice, I requested a Piano instructor who is knowledgeable in jazz and not overly strict in teaching style, as I tend to get nervous playing in front of teachers. The administration suggested Instructor Chris Lin. Although Instructor Chris's bio indicated that he doesn't have as much teaching experience as my previous instructors, his background in jazz and music composition intrigued me. We have been taking lessons with her for 2 years. She always said, we are human, not robots. Every song, we need to add our feelings to make it different. That's true. Not going to lie, i was a bit hesitant to bring my sons here because of some of the negative reviews which all pretty much involves scheduling and or payments, something I dont usually have a problem with so I decided to give them a try anyways AND WHEWWW AM I GLAD I DID! I took my 2 boys, ages 3 and 6 to sign up for private piano classes and was pleasantly greeted by the front desk. The whole trial set up process went very smoothly and they even informed me that my 3 year old might be too young for private lessons but offered me their YOUNG MUSCIANS program for younger kids! Currently been with 88 keys for about 2 months and we love our piano teacher and my 3 year old son raves bout his young musicians teacher all the time. We love you 88 keys! Annie was very pleasant on the phone and in our meeting. She assured that there would be consistency with the teacher that would be paired with our daughter. In the beginning it was great, we had the scheduled we wanted for her violin lessons, but sadly it only lasted about 2 weeks. After the first two weeks the teacher that was paired with my daughter was not going to be able to teach her anymore. We had the option of constantly changing days, or getting a new teacher all together. This was not what were told when we signed her up. We came to 88 Keys with the impression that there would be consistency and good structure for our daughter. I am sad to say that we did not continue on here, and that if you are looking for a great music school, with consistency for your child, this is not the place to go. I've never had problems getting a hold of Annie or any other management staff when I had questions or needed to rearrange/reschedule a lesson. Annie sets her expectations clearly in the music studio's policies. I think as long as you READ the policy then there should be no problems regarding rescheduling/makeup lessons etc. I've been to other music schools and the policy here is fairly standard. The staff and faculty are friendly and personable. The teachers here go above and beyond to create a positive learning experience for their students. I remember one teacher spent EXTRA TIME outside of the lesson to help a student who was having trouble with the piano pedals. The teachers at 88 Keys try to be as accommodating as possible to each individual students' needs and schedules. There's a wide diversity of students from young children just starting out or adults picking up a new hobby. Majority of the teachers there are graduate students or alums of USC Thornton School of Music (one of the most prestigious music schools on the West Coast). My little girl (5 years old) started group lessons here about half a year ago and then started private lessons with Miss Kaiyun. She loves her piano class and she's shown great improvement. Miss Kaiyun is very patient with her and makes class fun for her. This academy is very professional and it's always packed here with students getting ready for lessons. I recommend private lessons vs. group lessons, in group lessons the students have to be at the same level and learning speed to work. She's a great teacher and tries really hard to accommodate schedules. She's also very talented in the violin, but more importantly teaches well. She works hard with kids, understanding their needs and helping their blind spots. She cares about them learning but is gentle as well, like giving kids stickers when they accomplish something. Encouraging and praise goes a long way for kids, and she does that often. Being a teacher is not an easy task. It's not just about sight reading, practicing scales and learning music theory, but also being able to communicate well with kids, having them feel safe and comfortable and caring for them. She does a great job at both, being skilled at music but also being personal, friendly and desiring kids to succeed in a manner that puts the kids wellbeing foremost before hers. My son has learned a tremendous amount of jazz technique and theory within that time period. Ark has taught not only the jazz standards, but also the modern music my son enjoys. He is like a mentor to my son, and at the end of the year gives us a CD of all the songs my son has learned/recorded that year. My younger son, also from a classical piano background, has been taking drum lessons for almost 2 years from Jose Garcia and Andy Robbins. They both provide execellent instruction and drum techniques. They are both professionals, and as such are very knowledgable about song structure, and have many creative ideas for drum patterns, fills, etc that they have taught my son. My son has learned a tremendous amount of drum technique and theory from them and is able to apply that to his own arrangements. The owner Annie runs an excellent organization, and is very accomodating to the students needs. She puts on the best school recitals I have seen.
