The instrument we were given was determined by the music program's director and assistant to be, instead, a violin. I obtained a third opinion at Encore Music, and was informed by the teacher there as well that the instrument we had been given is (i.e., was strung as) a violin. I brought it back today for a refund of pro-rated rental fee (from what I had paid upfront). Note that I asked the assistant at the store to identify the instrument for me before telling him the problem; he identified it as a violin. When I explained the reason for the return, he then said that it is a viola, and brought it to the proprietor, who insisted that it was a viola all along. I insisted on the return, but they did not refund me the tax I pre-paid, and also charged me for a full 3 months' payment instead of the 2.5 months it has been. Overall, this has been a frustrating waste of time and money. There are many other options for instrument rentals in the area and I recommend you use a different one.

One of them takes piano lessons with Esther and the other takes guitar lessons with Drew. They are both amazing teachers. He's so talented and he has sparked a joy and love for learning guitar in my son that is so enjoyable to see. The studio staff is always very helpful with any questions I have, and if you are with a Charter School, they are an approved vendor for many schools in the area. Lessons are affordably priced, and if you need to cancel and reschedule, you can get a credit as long as you do so with advance notice. Even if you need to cancel last minute, (which unfortunately happened to us one time when our car broke down on the way to the lesson), they will send a video lesson so that your child can view it on their own. I would highly recommend Monrovia Music Academy! They have lessons for many instruments and offer voice lessons as well and for all ages. With a review, no less!…read more The owner, Edmund Wu, is actually a personal friend of mine and, well, I helped him get an eBay retail business going back in the mid '90s (as well as sundry other violin-related ventures he had brewing in his mind at the time). In return, he arranged to have instruments built for me in China. While they *do* maintain a quasi-storefront, this is basically a violin academy that holds periodic recitals as well. They also do A LOT of wholesale-to-the-trade activity. You couldn't tell by looking at the place from the street, but the back half of the building is a warehouse! Since you're probably not a wholesaler, let me tell you a bit about their normal-people services. There's a small violin shop. You can buy recordings, accessories, sheet music, and any violin-family instrument in any size. There is also a limited selection of antique instruments. They also have some very high-grade Chinese violins that give some of the better old Italians a run for their money. They have cheap stuff too. The whole gamut, basically. Most repairs are sent out. I don't know what else to say. The teachers, of whom Edmund is one, are very qualified. Ask for Edmund, because he's the only one who speaks English well enough to carry out any meaningful business. They're closed on Mondays. They also have a small boutique shop in a reconverted bungalow down in Old Town Fullerton, on the west side of Harbor Blvd., north of Chapman.
