Like ALL terrestrial radio stations in ATL, they're owned by COX Media, which means a bunch of useless, corporate trash decides what the rest of us hear. That means the same 3 songs by a handful of bands: Boston, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Skynyrd, and that mediocre hack known as Tom Petty. Their playlist is operated by a computer, so their fake DJ's act as if they're the ones playing it, but it's completely automated. Screw the River and screw COX Media. read more

I'm sorry but I just can't listen to this station for two reasons. One Is playing way to much of Bon Jovi and English Nick sucks. He's not English at all. Lot of improvements could be done. Try being like 106.5 in Chattanooga. read more

97.1 the river is a radio station for those of us who cannot get over the fact that some of the best music ever created was recorded 30-40 years ago. Of course I was not born even close to the time era that all of the music played on this radio station was made, but it does not take a musical genius to figure out how big of an impact and influence the artists of the 60's and 70's made on music of today. The river does a great job of getting all of the artists of that musical era the playtime they deserve, with little or no commercial interruption. So, if you prefer the company of bands like the Doors, Pink Floyd, the Allman Brothers, and many many more, then turn your radio dial (or push the seek button) to one of my favorite radio stations in Atlanta. read more

I was at the pool working for twelve hours listening to this station because I have to, and it usually plays Love Is A Battlefield multiple times a day, and I love that song. I waited all day for Love Is A Battlefield to play, I made all the other lifeguards listen out for it, I checked the website to see if it had played. Love Is A Battlefield never played. Love Is A Battlefield has not played in almost 30 hours. Give the people what they want; give them the battlefield.I would like to hear Love Is A Battlefield more. read more

Let me preface this review by saying that I like classic rock, and I also like Oldies music. I know we're all supposed to shy away from calling it "Oldies" now because my generation can't handle the fact that the music from their childhood is now old enough to be part of that category, but come on. I grew up singing along to all of the songs on Fox 97, and I was a rabid fan of Z-93 AFTER it stopped being a Top 40 station (does anyone on Yelp remember that it used to be Top 40? I swear it did and no one ever believes me). So I fully expected that I was going to like The River. And you know what? For about a week, I really did. Then I realized that their rotation only contains about 30 songs. This is really only a slight exaggeration. How many times do I need to hear "Peaceful, Easy Feeling" by the Eagles? I assure you that it's not giving me a peaceful, easy feeling anymore. I do want to give them props for playing fewer commercials and less annoying chatter than most other Atlanta stations. However, when the music played is boringly repetitive, the absence of commercials and talk really just underscores the monotony of it all. read more

This Station was great, back when it first came on air about 3-4 years ago. They keep saying "The New 971 The River". I don't quite understand how this station can still be classified as being "new". ATL has many newer stations, since the River has come on air and non of them seem to advertise they are "new". read more

The "River" is a classic hits station. For the most part there are very few surprises in what they play. They stick with the over played "hits" from Zep, Floyd, Fleetwood Mac..... You are not likely to hear a "deeper cut". I always say if you miss a song on the River don't worry! It will be played tomorrow and the next day and the next day....... But this is corporate radio coast to coast. I do miss the days when the station at least tried to do something different. They would do "a-z of all their songs", theme weekends (outside of the standard "rock block" or "two play" weekends), all request shows (like what they did on Christmas Eve) and the awesome "Deep River Vault" show each Sunday evening. 2 hours of a listener coming in and playing what ever they want. A show that was cut, without warning and without even a stated reason. Forget asking them about the show. They act like it never happened. So much of what made this station great went up in smoke after Clapper was let go as programming director. Now it is 100% by the corporate book! Yawn. read more

This is apparently the only halfway decent station in Atlanta. I had a rental car for almost a month, and in lieu of my CD player, I put the radio on scan for a good week before finally settling on this station. I like all the old stuff, but they do tend to overplay some songs. I heard Hey Jude about twice a day. They really can't pick something else out of that huge era of music besides Hey Jude again? They aren't excessive with commercials or chatty DJs, which is nice, but I had some trouble getting the station in some parts of the city. I do enjoy getting to blast a little Kansas occasionally. usually when I roll through Atlanta I rock with the river all the time but I have had a question for you on the day before the Super bowl 2019 Saturday morning I got you picked up outside of Madison Georgia was probably about 5:40 in the morning and up until I lost your signal as I got closer to adairsville there was no music I heard a couple of commercials it first of that when we get back to the music and it was just commercials for over an hour and a half not one song played is that what happens on Saturday morning so I was just curious to know is really weird no on air personalities nobody know nothing just the same commercials play over and over again maybe you guys can respond to that just curious read more

Actually the River was prettty good for a lame classic rock type station about two yrs ago IMO.. But god.. how much Heart can one man listen to in a single span of a day. Also.. u know many of these bands had album tracks.. i mean.. WHy not play "Spanish Caravan" by the DOORS.. I moved to South Carolina a year and a half ago and spent a lot of time looking for a decent radio station. I thought I had hit pay dirt when I found the River. Until the third day I listened to it. I hadn't heard 'Roxanne' (Police), 'Jack n Diane' (John Mellencamp), 'Beast of Burden' (The Stones), 'With a Little Help from My Friends' (Ringo Starr) for a while, but man, I hear them every time I listen. That isn't to say that I won't listen to the station ever again. I just can't listen everyday or I would die of boredom! I usually only listen to the radio when I am in my car.. It is locked on to 97.1 The River, I never change it..Lately I hear them talking about the Bob Segar concert coming on January 31, I am from Michigan and 3 months younger than Segar. I never got the chance to see him, But hoping I can get tickets when they come on sale.. I enjoyed this station when it was really new, but exactly when does it mature to the point of not being called new anymore. I grew up in the era of music that "the river" plays and it was a time of some really good music but even I am sick of the same old songs. Please get some new "old" songs to play. I swear ever time I turn it on "American Pie" is playing. Frankly I thought that song sucked when it came out originally. read more
