Say good bye to 99X (well, not completely... it's just not available on your radio anymore). Yes indeed, in a few weeks 99X is being switched to an online radio station. It will also be broadcast on 99.7-2 for those with HD receivers. Honestly, I rarely listen to the radio anymore because I have XM in my car. I always liked 99X, though... well, at least I feel like I did. I can remember attending Big Day Out when I was in high school and having the time of my life. Even though I didn't attend those types of events as I grew up, I still liked the music and enjoyed their programming for the most part. Believe it or not, I'm a big fan of Leslie Fram. She's accomplished quite a bit in the industry and continues to be an influential leader. I actually like how her voice sounds and other than the stupid April Fool's Day joke where she allegedly cut off part of her finger, I liked her role on The Morning X. Speaking of accomplishments, what other radio station could get a phone call from Courtney Love sounding strung out and then play "White Trash Rap" as a follow-up without ever identifying her? Sean, Leslie, and Jenners is a great new mix of DJ talent that starts your day most exhilarating and random. I've been listening to the Morning X since the days of Barnes, Leslie, and Jimmy and can say proudly that the show has evolved most definitely. On Weds and Friday mornings they offer the Short Stack - a list of up and coming bands and/or CDs of which they play a short selection from to give their listeners a hint of whats coming up. They also have hilarious events like the Beer Belly Brigade down Peachtree St. - a spoof on the mostly hated Tyra's "So What" campaign on woman loving themselves even though they are fat. I have always found myself lying in bed listening to the show instead of snoozing to catch up on those extra 15 minutes of sleep. And with that said, I even find myself taking a extra long pause and rest to put on my shoes in the morning so that I can finish listening to their stories and wait for commercial break before I run out to my car to turn it on again. I used to love the Bert Show while Melisa Carter was on air and before Wendy got too much air time. I just found out that she is no longer with the show and am sorry to hear of her departure. I did not hate her but I find that she gives very mediocre advice and are very judgmental on issues she's very ignorant about. That sounds harsh but I've listen to them for years. I do think she did a great job on Traffic; don't really care for the new guy (Christian) as much. I did root for Kristen before she came on air and now I've been regretting it. She's not very tactful and I feel she adds nothing to the group to make it better. I like Jeff Dauler and although Bert's ego is much bigger than him, literally, he really makes the show interesting and tolerable. Their Bert's Big Adventure makes me cry every year because it's a great cause for the kids and their families, regardless if they did it for rating or wholeheartedly - at least the right people are benefiting too. They have become very repetitive and dull as of late. I do have to agree with Greg A about them stretching the interview segments. I no longer need my Sirius radio for my morning commute as I have been enjoying the Bert Show so much. In fact, there have been a number of days where I had to stall and pretend to fiddle with something in my car before going in to my office as I had to hear the last of a segment. It's almost impressive that a station could become this big playing the same songs for years and years. You could turn on the station now and five years ago and still hear the same Pearl Jam song, the same Nirvana. And those are really the only remotely 'good' tracks they play. Anything they add on now as 'new music' is either something that got shoveled to them by the turd vendors as the next big thing, or the bands that have been around for 5-10 years and just now got signed to a major. I liked when they started playing Modest Mouse and talking about this new band that just came out. 10 years after their first album. The word 'chode' pretty aptly describes most of the people they let come on the air at this station. I am going to raise the Yelp Atlanta rating for 99x and give them some credit for the good music they play on occasion and their old morning show that featured Fred Toucher, who will forever be a legend among radio DJs in Atlanta. I have been listening to this radio station for years and I never think twice about programming their frequency in my radios preset. What else are you going to listen to in Atlanta? 96.1 has transformed into some kind of heavy metal monster and we all know how terrible Star 94 and 95.5 The Beat are. I realize that lately they have been playing garbage (cough..cough...Fall Out Boy..) but sometimes they take a step back a decade or so with their play-list and play some of the great music that inspired me when I was younger to take up the guitar. So, don't try and tell me that if you tuned past this station when they were playing some old school Radio Head or Beastie Boys that you would curse 99x and vow never to listen to them again. I think the main problem with this station is Leslie, who is a veteran DJ on the morning show and also fulfills the role of program director. I would rather listen to the corny 'Steve and Vikki Show' on Star 94 than sit through one of her monotone celebrity gossip updates that she does everyday on the morning show. Rumor has it that she is the main reason that Toucher and Jimmy left the morning show. Allegedly, she kicked Crash Clark off for a shock jock moment he failed to avoid, and soon the rest of the pieces in the show left right behind him. That is purely speculation though, so don't try to throw the libel card at me if you are reading this Leslie. It is not my fault that some people in your audience view you as a washed up DJ who has never been remotely interesting, and whose manipulating dictatorial management style did nothing but send all of your stations true talent packing. read more

Yeah, you'll have to add me to those who have the, "repetitive and over-programmed", feeling about Q100. I usually don't stay on the station very long if/when I'm flipping through the stations, but as others have admitted to, generally I do like the Bert Show and will listen on my short commute to work in the mornings. My one beef with the Bert Show is when they interview everyday folks who have personal problems (which of course, we listen to): They go on and on and on before they finally GET to it. "We'll be talking to Susie-Q about her cheating husband right after traffic"... then you listen to traffic and, "Susie-Q in just a minute after this!"... and you listen to TEN commercials.... "Susie-Q coming up right after the break...", then after the break you hear the news instead with, "We've got Susie-Q on hold and we'll be talking to her in a minute...". I mean.. Jesus, folks!!!!! I do my entire morning commute before you get to the stuff. Ugh. Let's face it, the Atlanta radio market almost has a bad reputation for boring, "yawny" type music stations, so I guess considering the choices, Q100 isn't any worse than any other. If you like hearing the same bubble-gum tunes three times per hour then you'll fit in with the average listener, and if you can stand the hour long waits before they get to the punch lines, you can handle the morning shows. At least their banter with each other on the Bert Show is entertaining at times. read more

I love the Bert Show! I used to listen to other stations when I first moved here, but found the Bert Show to be completely funny most of the time. They keep it interesting with lots of story lines provided by other Atlantans. They have topics ranging from "Will my boyfriend propose to me this weekend?" to "Celebrity Incarceration Draft". Always light and funny. Don't listen to the Bert Show if you expect to hear music. I can count on one hand how many songs they play between 6 and 8 am. The rest of the day is a rotation of the top pop hits, which if you like, this is the best station for you. You'll definitely hear those billboard hits. Overall, this station is very community friendly. They have contests and give aways that get people involved. They encourage community input. And they are involved in community improvement activities like the Atlanta Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk and Bert's Big Adventure. Update: 1/15/08 I just attended one of the FREE Self Defense seminars organized by this station. Say what you want about them, but they keep their community involvement current and relevant. Reluctantly, I will have to agree with Thomas R. that The Bert Show is pretty darn funny. When I had a 9-5 job (well, 8:30-5:30) I would get lulled to sleep listening to music while sitting in traffic so one day I decided to listen to a morning show. A coworker said to try Q100 and even though I do not like the music they play on this station, The Bert Show had me in tears! People driving next to me probably thought I was clinically insane the way I was hyena laughing with tears rolling out of my eyes! The show hooked me and some mornings I would be late to work because I would be sitting in my car finishing up a story they were talking about. But now they have a voice mail service for people like me who can't listen to the whole show. If you go to their website you can give them your number and you will get a recorded message every few days catching you up on some of the funniest stories of the week. Despite the fact that I am giving Q100 4 stars, I completely agree with Mark W. that this station is repetitive, overprogrammed, and annoying. I especially dislike the canned "top 40" shows that are played on the weekends and evenings. However, I'm giving 4 stars based on a comparison of Q100 with OTHER Top 40 stations I've heard. I'm really not a fan of that sort of thing, so the fact that I am willing to listen to this station at all, ever, means that they are doing something right. I have to grudgingly admit that one of the things they do right is the Bert Show. I grew up in Atlanta, and I learned to hate morning shows after years of tolerating Steve & Vikki, the Regular Guys, and even the Morning X (sorry to all of you Morning X fans... I know there were a lot of you). When the Bert Show first came on, I hated it too. About a year ago, I started listening to the Bert Show every now and again because I decided to get rid of my XM radio subscription. Although I prefer music in the morning to endless talking, the "talk" on the Bert Show is not half bad. The members of the show seem to have good chemistry with each other. I mean, for all I know they hate each other off-mic, but on the air they act like comfortable old friends and I'd rather hear that in the morning than screaming, goofy morning show prank calls (which they keep to a minimum, or redneck humor. Also, the members of the show seem to have a sincere desire to help others in the community. This doesn't mean that I always prefer Q100 in the morning as opposed to one of the few stations in Atlanta that actually plays music. But compared with other Atlanta morning shows, Q100 has the best one, hands-down. And I think that overall, boringly overprogrammed or not, this station is probably about as intelligently programmed as a Top 40 station is going to be. read more

I'll start by saying that I generally hate Top 40 stations, and Q100 is pretty much no different. The station, as others have so aptly noted, is 'repetitive and over-programmed'. The repetition is about the worst I've ever experienced with any station. As an example, when I was first looking for a good radio station in the area, I tuned into Q100 for a few days during work to get a sense of the music they play. I noticed that they really like to play the same 5-10 songs over and over again. One day I decided to count the number of times they played the new Taylor Swift song (their favorite at the time). Between the hours of 10:00 and 2:00, they played the song 5 times. Essentially, they play 5-10 songs per hour and repeat that same playlist all day long. After a day or two, I was sick of their music. The station from 10:00am on deserves a solid 1-star. So why the two stars? Before 10:00am is the Bert Show, which I really happen to enjoy. I'd probably say it's among the best morning shows I've heard. To start, this is a talk radio morning show so don't tune in for the music. I can count on one hand (sometimes one finger) the number of songs they play during the show. I like the show when they interview everyday people going through (often) very bizarre situations. I also like when they get into semi-deep discussions about things going on in the world or their own lives. All the members of the show have great chemistry together and they are generally just fun to listen to. But .... Greg A. was spot on with his criticism that they sometimes take way too long to get to a segment that they keep promising is coming up in just a minute. If you actually count, it can sometimes take 30 minutes from first promising that a segment was right around the corner to actually getting to the segment. They are also absolutely obsessed with pop culture, celebrities, and 'reality' shows. They seem to have a need to kiss Hollywood's ass, like what goes on with Kim Kardashian's life is the most important thing going on in the world. There's also Wendy, who I just tune out as a general rule. Overall, I enjoy the Bert Show, but hate the rest of the station. I tune in most mornings and turn it off as soon as the Bert Show is off the air. Overall, I'd give the Bert Show a solid 4 stars and the rest of the station 1 star. Two stars seems a reasonable compromise between the two because this is a review of Q100 as a station and not just the Bert Show. read more

Love the Bert Show and the music. This review is specifically about the Q100 Big Wicked Halloween Event. The costume contest was SCAM. We expected way more from a Q100 event. We spent a lot of time and money on our costumes and chose this event over many others in the city because we thought it would be legit. We waited until 3am for the contest that never happened. To not even have a contest was absolutely ridiculous. Suddenly there were 'winners' with no actual voting and the $ given away was $3,000, not $5,000. A large group of contestants who didn't even get to compete were very upset, everyone else was too intoxicated to notice. This was the obvious plan as the 'winners' were announced when the lights were turned on and the door men were asking us to leave. Thanks for ruining our Halloween. read more

I like the comradely of the show but have noticed that Burt uses the term "white man" very often in a negative manner. Such as the world handshake meaning friendship being inferior or not cool like the black handshake. Burt also infers that white music is not as cool as black music and white people don't have the cool moves like the black community. I find this degrading and disrespectful to the white population. Burt what you might think as being "cool" may be considered without class by some. Not all blacks dance well, I want you to explain why the majority of top pop singers are white. I think you need to apologize for generalizing against a race. I thought we were all supposed to get along, one person being equal to another. After hangin with Melissa Carter for 3 weekends in a row I am even more of a fan. She is so awesome. Not only is she down to earth and friendly she really did a great job at our Grand Opening Parties. The Residents and potential Residents had a blast. For those of you who don't listen to the Bert Show, you need to it is so funny. We listen to it at work and it's a great station. On a serious note, the other thing that impresses me is Bert's Big Adventure. Each year the Bert Show takes sick children to Disney World for a week with their families and to me this is amazing. I am working on getting our company to become a sponsor and I am going to try and raise money for this at my own community. I will do anything to support a good cause and this is great cause. No child should miss out on visiting Disney World at least once in their lives. And if they only have short time to live, this makes it even more important. I have stopped listening to "The Bert Show" because they have too many commercials. All the other top 40 stations in Atlanta do not have near as many commercials. Even their segments that you can listen to online have "mandatory" commercials in them. Also they only do about 2 hours of live programming. After that you just listen to what they recorded earlier in the day. Like others have mentioned, they also continue to promise segments for a long period of time before they actually get to it. read more

I do like listening to this show once in a while, but I have to say that some of their conversations are a little ignorant. The show is obviously geared toward a white audience and some of the discussions are pretty idiotic. Sometimes they have okay topics and are funny to listen to, but listening to four plain white people giving their all white people opinions on white people topics can get old and annoying pretty quickly.
