As…read moresomeone with a naturally skinny build and a fast metabolism, I've always struggled to gain muscle despite years of trying everything from HIIT to traditional weightlifting. Working against my own genetics always felt like an insurmountable challenge. When I started working with Jon, he helped me set realistic goals, put the fear and doubt behind me, and helped me build a plan that actually worked for my body and lifestyle. Sessions with Jon are fun, instructive, intense, and focused. In addition to being a great conversationalist and keeping things light, he is constantly providing clear instruction and pointers on all aspects of the session, from form to breathing to tips for endurance and nutrition. His holistic approach is well rounded and covers all of the bases. Ten months later, I'm proud to say I've gained 11 pounds of muscle, something I never thought possible. My old dress shirts no longer fit (the buttons are about ready to pop out), and I see noticeable muscle growth across my entire body. Beyond the physical results, I've gained a sense of confidence, discipline, and focus that's carried into other areas of my life. Having my partner and friends comment on my improved physique fills me with pride, and the fact that the benefits I've gained with Jon ripple far beyond the gym is a testament to his professionalism and effectiveness. Jon is both highly knowledgeable and genuinely encouraging. He pushes me when I need it, and somehow makes every session fun instead of purely a grind. He's personable, easy to be around, and creates an environment where I feel safe to challenge myself, fail, and try again. I would recommend Jon to absolutely anyone looking for a personal trainer. I can say with the utmost conviction that working with him has been one of the highlights of my year.

I cannot recommend working with Jon enough and would like to emphasize three areas that have impressed me the most! First, Jon's more than ten years of experience show in every aspect of our work together. In creating a workout program for me and my girlfriend, Jon carefully listened to our goals and designed a program that would push us towards them. For example, I wanted to increase my upper body strength, get more definition in my arms, and increase my hip mobility. While I was expecting to do bunches of bicep curls, Jon has helped me understand the importance of working your entire body, particularly your lower body, and how doing so can help you build muscle all over. As a result, my workouts these days are varied, so I don't get bored or injured, but always helping push me towards my goals. He even does it without me noticing sometimes--like workouts I didn't know would help with hip flexibility but that have made a tremendous difference in my everyday life. Jon's experience also shows in the way he treats you. I am never "scared" to go workout with Jon. I know he will challenge me and make me lift heavier weights than the week before, and I know that I will leave sweating and exhausted. But, I also know that he is monitoring my progress and that he never wants to push me to a point where it's dangerous or where I am not comfortable. He's great at making adjustments where necessary, for example, sometimes he will give me a little bit longer of a break if I am particularly dying after an exercise. Second, Jon is focused on long term change and development. If you want results (e.g. significant weight loss), Jon can get you there, I'm sure, but I think his strength is that he takes a longer term approach. He doesn't want me to just get stronger and then be done with it. He wants me to understand why we are doing the exercises we are doing and why I should be eating the foods I am. He envisions our work together as creating long term change, which is what I want. Third, is that I actually do feel the difference our workouts and his nutritional guidance is making. I feel stronger and more confident. My shoulders, arms, and chest have grown. And, for the first time in a long time, I feel like I am progressing in my workouts. I used to continue to lift a certain weight longer than I should--mostly because I could do the reps I needed to do at that weight. But Jon picks what weights I do each week, which means I have no choice but to move up. Shockingly, I've kept pace with the increasing weights and am lifting more than I thought I could! It's an amazing boost to your week when you're hitting your goals and when you have someone pushing you and achieving them with you. Jon is excellent at both one-on-one training and at couples training. He is flexible with scheduling and attentive to COVID procedures. If you're looking to make a change, definitely check him out!

The instructors and front desk reps are so friendly and took the time to get to know me at the cheer station for the 10 miler event last week and before/after the regular classes. I accidentally left my water bottle at my bike last night, and emailed the team. The owner, Kristin, was an angel and alerted the staff. One of the instructors and the front desk advised me of where the lost and found is and helped me figure out which one it was. Thank you for that because that bottle is expensive, lol I am literally sweating my fat away in these classes. I step on the scale every morning and noticed that I have lost three pounds this week. When I went last year, I lost ten pounds in about three weeks. I also feel "refreshed" and like a brand new person after my classes. After my contract ends with another boutique gym in the area and if I stay in the Cville area (I'm out of the area 5 days a week/12 hours a day for work right now), I will alternate monthly between going here and the other gyms in the area (I like to mix up fitness routines because I get bored easily). Parking is still a little tricky in the evenings, but since I signed up for the early morning classes, it has been a breeze (knocks on wood). I'm not a morning person, so not wanting to go back to sleep after classes taken at this studio is pretty awesome. That's how great the instructors are. Please do not change, Purvelo.

I was in town for one weekend and wanted to try the studio and they kindly offer a complimentary free first class. I came for an early Sunday morning class and was greeted with very kind staff members happy to help or answer questions. The class itself was different than I expected, but still an overall great workout. They are very Soul Cycle like with the combinations of upper body crunches and push ups style dance moves, which was the one draw back for me. I am more into the hardcore HIIT style bike work outs and am not coordinated enough to mix in the crunches and moves along with fast cycling. The instructor, Robyn, was great and very energetic and kept the energy high the entire class. Overall I would come back to this studio to try a different classes and instructors!

I visited upstairs and did the elliptical, some free weights and a leg press. all worked great. I was disappointed to learn that ACAC as a multi-location workout facility doesn't have a membership tier that is inclusive for temporary/non-residents. it's either, you buy a one-time pass for $25; a three-day one; or a full monthly. nothing in between. Charlottesville itself is known for having a very transient, ever-changing population so this policy doesn't make sense to me. When I was there, some weirdo was on the stairclimber making this god-awful coughing noise about every 10 seconds. look, I know everyone has their workout quirks but spreading your germs around knowingly (in the age of airborne viruses like COVID) is a bad idea. I brought it to the attention of the desk attendant and she did not seem particularly phased by the news. ACAC Downtown is within walking distance of my flat/crashpad so I will go back. but I'm just hoping they either bring back the punch card or institute a program for non-residents to make life a bit easier.

The women's locker room is disgusting, it smells and there is hair all over the floor and on the shower walls and floor. The hot tub is dirty too. The locker room is way over due for an overhaul. The lockers are dirty and don't get cleaned out ever. It doesn't make sense to have kids in the women's locker room either. Have a family area for changing clothes. Also, the pool is always overrun by kids and it's loud. Terrible gym don't waste your time or money.
