I have been working with Jon now for 5 weeks. Three of those weeks I have worked with Jon on my own, and two of those weeks my girlfriend joined as well. I cannot recommend working with Jon enough and would like to emphasize three areas that have impressed me the most! First, Jon's more than ten years of experience show in every aspect of our work together. In creating a workout program for me and my girlfriend, Jon carefully listened to our goals and designed a program that would push us towards them. For example, I wanted to increase my upper body strength, get more definition in my arms, and increase my hip mobility. While I was expecting to do bunches of bicep curls, Jon has helped me understand the importance of working your entire body, particularly your lower body, and how doing so can help you build muscle all over. As a result, my workouts these days are varied, so I don't get bored or injured, but always helping push me towards my goals. He even does it without me noticing sometimes--like workouts I didn't know would help with hip flexibility but that have made a tremendous difference in my everyday life. Jon's experience also shows in the way he treats you. I am never "scared" to go workout with Jon. I know he will challenge me and make me lift heavier weights than the week before, and I know that I will leave sweating and exhausted. But, I also know that he is monitoring my progress and that he never wants to push me to a point where it's dangerous or where I am not comfortable. He's great at making adjustments where necessary, for example, sometimes he will give me a little bit longer of a break if I am particularly dying after an exercise. Second, Jon is focused on long term change and development. If you want results (e.g. significant weight loss), Jon can get you there, I'm sure, but I think his strength is that he takes a longer term approach. He doesn't want me to just get stronger and then be done with it. He wants me to understand why we are doing the exercises we are doing and why I should be eating the foods I am. He envisions our work together as creating long term change, which is what I want. Third, is that I actually do feel the difference our workouts and his nutritional guidance is making. I feel stronger and more confident. My shoulders, arms, and chest have grown. And, for the first time in a long time, I feel like I am progressing in my workouts. I used to continue to lift a certain weight longer than I should--mostly because I could do the reps I needed to do at that weight. But Jon picks what weights I do each week, which means I have no choice but to move up. Shockingly, I've kept pace with the increasing weights and am lifting more than I thought I could! It's an amazing boost to your week when you're hitting your goals and when you have someone pushing you and achieving them with you. Jon is excellent at both one-on-one training and at couples training. He is flexible with scheduling and attentive to COVID procedures. I have been training with Jon Hanna for almost a year now (since the end of March '22). I train with him 3-5 days a week with 4 being the average. I came to Jon as an older guy (52) who had some experience with exercise and weightlifting as well as a good bit of education in the exercise science field. Unfortunately, I had not had much success in generating the results I wanted for myself. Jon and I met and talked and went over goals. I outlined what I was looking for and he gave his feedback on what was reasonable. I also let him know I had some nagging and persistent low back and hip problems as well as some shoulder issues. We started up several days later with some basic stuff testing my strength, mobility, balance, flexibility, endurance and cardiorespiratory fitness. What is amusing is I was far less fit than I thought I was, but I know that is pretty common. What also became apparent is I was "skinny fat". So, I looked ok in clothes, but lacked a decent percentage of lean body mass and had a high body fat percentage. So rather than my normal method of calorie deficit and cardio, Jon outlined a plan for more protein, weights, some hard, short cardio with the goal of adding muscle to be more metabolic. From here the baby steps began. Based on my strength and mobility and other fitness indicators Jon put me on a program to first get me moving better and being more mobile while working on strength, conditioning, and learning the basic lifts. It is humbling learning some of these things and realizing how poorly you are performing but Jon makes you feel very at ease. He is understanding and patient and realizes what is reasonable for you. He makes you work hard, but within your limits - all with an awareness of injury prevention and an eye on physical and even facial cues to know when to pull back from something or scale the movement or weight. Over time my movement and mobility got better and strength improved. As time progressed we moved from the beginning program to a more advanced program with bigger/heavier compound movements and barbells. We do things now that there is absolutely no way I could have done at the beginning, and many of my nagging injuries and mobility issues are either gone or have steadily improved. There are also large mental impacts from training with Jon. While I know generally what we will be doing I don't know the details. I know there will be things I like and things I don't like. But I have slowly learned the things I don't like are things that are harder for me and the best way to handle it is just embrace the difficult bits and get better at them. You learn to stop using avoidance as a coping method. Jon teaches you that the way to cope is just grind through it and get better at it. Jon has also helped me learn I can work a lot harder than I thought I could and makes that easier because I have accountability to him when we train, in the same way he has accountability to me to deliver solid programming that is well monitored and safe while delivering enough stimulus for adaptation. He pushes when it's the right time to push and pulls back and gives you some breathing room when it's the right time for that. I honestly could not recommend Jon enough. He is a great trainer, extremely knowledgeable, and fun to train with while still pushing you. The atmosphere is great and most days my training session is the best part of my day. I was always a fit and active person, but had recently lost a lot of motivation and gained a lot of weight. When I was first getting into Crossfit I would just go on to the Main page and do the work out. While this was hard and challenging for myself, I didn't always feel as though I was pushing myself to the limit or even over the limit. I then met John while working out in Ramstein, Germany and from that day on we would do two work outs a day. Even though he was stronger than me he never put me down discouraged me. Always building each other up and giving helpful words of encouragement. The only place where I could keep up was on the rower that sweet sweet death machine. John is always down to help out anyone, but at the same time you have to be willing to push through the pain and not quit on yourself. I've always been athletic and have had several trainers and gyms over the years. However, working out with Jon has been life changing. Jon has a way of inspiring people to fully commit to showing up to work out, putting in the time in 1:1 sessions or alone, and making positive changes outside of the gym leading to better results. Jon will definitely push you to achieve goals you never even dreamed of. When I first started, I never used anything heavier than 15 lb weights and never touched a barbell. Six months later I can squat 200 lbs and deadlift 215 lbs. Focusing on eating more vegetables, fruits, healthy proteins and increasing water consumption has revolutionized the way I work out and the way I feel throughout the day. I have more energy and sleep better because I'm fueling my body better and challenging my body with difficult workouts. I've never found a work out routine that I've consistently stuck with for long periods of time, because I travel for work and tend to get bored easily. I met Jon when I trained at CrossFit C'ville for the summer, and was incredibly impressed by the professionalism and ethos on which he runs his business. His ability to cater to the needs of his clients is truly unsurpassed - he encourages you to push limits and set new personal goals without overwhelming. I have been hitting the gym consistently for the past few years and wanted to see what it was like to switch up my workouts and really have a trainer take me to the next level. Jon was referred to me by a friend. One problem I thought, was I live in LA and he lives in the bay area. I ended up contacting Jon anyways to see how it would work and he was amazing from the beginning, asking me what I am looking to do (gain muscle but stay cut), giving me a background of his experience lifting, and how we will make the long distance training work. It's actually really cool, he programmed out a several month program for me and each week he gives me the workouts for the week. He checks up regularly on how the workouts are going and how I felt doing them. He has also given great advice on diet, protein supplementation and when to eat certain types of food for the best results. The long distance training has actually been amazing for me as well in that I get the workouts for the week and can do them on my own time. Since I've started training with Jon (coach) toward the end of Jan 2017, I've learned to find a balance between being present at the moment, while maintaining a goal-oriented futuristic outlook. Coach has taught me how to brush off any hindering factors (i.e. the missed rep or sluggishness from an accidental food splurge) and simply be the best I can be in the moment. With coach's constant support, I am motivated to remain focused and push myself harder each day no matter what obstacle lies in my way. At the same time, I've learned that progress takes time and in order to make those positive gains we all want, it's going to be a long-term fight and commitment. With that, I've realized how far good programming can go and help achieve goals. By bringing that daily focus and sticking with the long-term programming coach provides for me (he writes my program by 6-week cycles catered toward my personal fitness goals), I've been hitting numbers (at least 30lb increase in every single lift) and movements (like handstand walks and snatches) that I never would have imagined myself hitting. All those words to say, I found that I grew immensely as an individual and as an athlete in this past year simply because the coach I happened to stumble across is one who lives with integrity, goes above and beyond, and inspires me to conquer my goals... I don't doubt that he gives the same attention to detail, focus, and positivity to every person he works with, so I'd confidently recommend him to any person no matter what fitness level or goals that person may have. The mentality and discipline he helps you build will make you an overall better person inside and outside the gym. I was trying to get myself in shape for employment examination that I found was extremely challenging since I had not worked out in years. Not only that I needed to lose weight and improve my physical ability, I also needed an encouraging, passionate, and enthusiastic trainer who can motivate me. And I am so glad that I met John who did exactly just that. John listened attentively and carefully drafted the appropriate plan that not only helped me met my goals, but also motivated me to keep up with the healthy life. My family and I immediately recognized the changes. I lost 13 lbs of fat in the first two and half weeks and gained a lot more muscles. I now can do 50 push-ups, 40 sit ups, each in 1 minute easily and still can run 1.5 mile within 15 minutes or less, which I do not think I could do seven weeks ago.
