I called them saying I was sure my vent on the roof was clogged. I've had this happen before . They came and checked everything but the roof vent. Charged me 150.00 fixed nothing and said it's your roof vent. Scratched up my toilet trying to unclog it . Said it was to cold to go on the roof today and would get back to me in a week. Never heard from them. Got on the roof myself and unclogged my vent. read more

The service time was supposed to be from 10 am - 12 pm and Jeremy the technician was able to come early, about 9:30 am. We have 2 full bathrooms that were all backing up and was able to quickly come in and clear the drain clog. Very efficient and friendly. I will definitely recommend and will call again if I have another problem. read more

To be fair and transparent, A1 Sewer & Drain unclogged my drain and responded to my situation in a timely manner (within 2 hours), got the job done in a total of 15minutes. However, the technician - James was extremely hostile and unprofessional once I asked him if we would "flood the drain with a lot of water, since the plumber asked me to make sure it was fully unclogged." James said, "yeah I've been doing this for 10 years bud. I know what I'm doing here, sounds like a plumber.." I said alright, yeah I just wasn't sure. (as a young new homeowner with no prior plumbing experience...) The technician - James proceeded to unclog the drain but did not clean any of the gunk off the pit. I asked if he would be able to clean the walls of the pit a little so it didn't gunk up my sump pump again or the drain. He proceeded to say "No, hah... that's not my job bud..". I said, alright.. He walked out, grabbed the bill.. walked back in and filled it out. He then said "sorry about copping an attitude, I just don't like people telling me how to do my job.. I don't tell them how to do theirs." I said, "oh no, its all good." (trying to disarm the situation a little since he was clearly upset) and he *threw* the bill on my counter, walked out and *slammed* my door behind him... then hastily stomped away to get in his van without saying anything else... I literally don't understand how someone with "so many years of experience" hasn't learned to interact with customers and their questions/concerns in a professional manner. I most definitely do not recommend this company unless you have an absolute emergency that needs to be addressed. read more

We had a slow drain and our toilet was not flushing very well. I called A-1 to come out but had to wait four days. When they did come out their machine/snake got stuck in our line. I was told that they would call a plumber the next day to come out and pull the machine out. I called A-1 at 10:00 a.m. and was told that I was supposed to call the plumber (I didn't even know WHAT plumber to call) and that the customer pays to have their stuck machine pulled out. I didn't agree with that so the new owner said, we'll cover that for you if you agree to have us come out and run a camera (for $230) down there to see what is going on. He said that the previous owner used to charge the customer so he thought that was just the way it worked. I learned later that the previous owner was his dad.... I'm not positive that is true. They pulled the machine out and then were supposed to call to schedule the camera. When he did call, he said his camera wasn't available for at least two days. Then, he called again and said that the camera was not fixable and that a new camera wouldn't be here until the 3rd week of February. I said, no, I can't wait that long, I'm calling someone else. I called Cooley's out of Reinbeck and they came the next day, worked on it for 2 1/2 hours and the problem was solved. Cooley said they charge $169 to run the camera but didn't do that because the line was backed up with fluid. So they just ran a snake out and removed a lot of roots. Chris from A-1 wanted to know who I called and what they did because he was "curious." I told him what they did and he was glad they got it taken care of for me. But, did I send you a bill for the service call? No, they hadn't. I got a bill for $139 for the first tech to come out (who was very nice and apologetic about the machine getting stuck. I also got a bill for $160 for the owner to come out twice, once to look at my drain and his stuck machine and once to come out and pick up the plumber's machine after they had left at my house when they were done- so $299 total for little results. The bill from Cooley's was $230. A-1 did pull some roots out but my drains were running no better than before because there was so much more in there. When I questioned the total, he said "yeah, it is more than Cooley's because we took most of it out." He also said, " I also got a bill from the plumber for $440 but I'm obviously not going to pass on to you." Which he absolutely did try to pass on to me. His parting comment was we could have taken care of this for you because I do have a camera now. I said, yesterday, you weren't going to have one for 2 1/2 more weeks? He said, "I knew I couldn't wait that long....." He didn't tell me that the day before. We were texting so it is hard to tell someone's tone, but I feel like it was aggressive and laced with sarcasm. This is my favorite home maintenance call. They show up quickly, they're organized, courteous, fast, and reasonable. I call them for yearly maintenance, because I do a lot of bread baking, and also have some large trees between the house and sewer lines. Excellent business. read more

I got a bill today for $299 for a service call and for the owner to come out twice to look at the stuck machine and then to come back and pick up the plumbers equipment . He wanted to charge me over $400 to pay for the plumber to come out and get his machine unstuck, but he wouldn't charge me IF I agreed to have him come back and run his camera for $230. He told me he just bought the business and the that was the previous owner's policy, to have the customer pay for the plumber to come out and remove their stuck equipment..... THEN, I hear that the previous owner was HIS DAD.... His plan was to come back 3 days later (I waited 4 in the first place) and run a camera down there to see what the problem was. $230 to do that. Then calls and says he won't have the camera for a few days. Calls again and says the camera is broke and not fixable. Ordering a new one and it would be the 3rd week of February before it would get there. I said, no, I'm calling some place else. I called Cooley's out of Reinbeck and they were here the next day. They worked on it for about 2 1/2 hours and the problem was solved for $230. Terrible customer service by the owner, really sarcastic. The tech from there that came out and had the unfortunate luck to get the machine stuck was really a great guy. Very nice, very helpful. The owner, not so much. read more

James called me back about an hour after I called for emergency help. He let me explain what was happening. He let me know about when he would be able to come help unclog our drains. He worked thoroughly and was super nice. He explained to me what he found and unfortunately there wasn't a real answer to why the line clogged (no roots, or other foreign matter) but gave me some things to be watchful of. Price was about 1/2 of what I was expecting, will definitely use A1 if we ever need them again! read more

I called A-1 Sewer and Drain Cleaning on a Monday morning and told the person who answered the phone that when I ran water into the utility sink at my business, the water backed up and overflowed out of the floor drain. She said that she could send someone out right away. So far, so good. I asked for an estimate on how much the job would cost. She said the standard charge is $100, as long as it didn't take more than one hour. $100 seemed a little high, but I used A-1 years ago, really didn't know anything about any of the other drain cleaning companies, and wanted to get it taken care of as soon as possible, so I told her she could send someone out. They require payment upon completion of the job, and since I wasn't going to be at my business when the person came to do the work, I gave my credit card information over the phone. When I got to my business later, much to my dismay, I saw I had been charged an extra $50. I was charged $150 (plus tax) instead of the $100 I was expecting. A-1 did not call me for authorization regarding this extra charge prior to the work being done. I found out that when the technician came, he cleaned out the drain line for the utility sink, which had not even been running slow. Then when he ran water in the utility sink, it backed up out of the floor drain (like it did for me and which is what I told them the problem was when I called initially), so then he cleaned out the line for the floor drain, which is what he should have done in the first place and left the utility sink drain line alone--at least until he cleaned out the floor drain line so that he could run water in the utility sink and test that line before doing a cleaning that wasn't necessary, since it wasn't the utility sink drain that was backing up or running slow, it was the floor drain that was backing up. I called the office the next day to talk to them about the extra charge and asked why the sink drain was done. After telling me the technician wouldn't have done it if it wasn't necessary, the person (the same one I talked to when I initially called for service) said she would have him call me and explain why he cleaned out the other drain line. It is now Monday night--six days later--as I write this and he still hasn't called. I doubt that he will call, unless prompted to do so because of this review. After I had called to ask about the extra $50 charge, I watched the security video in my business and saw that the A-1 employee was only at my business for 1/2 hour, total, including the time it took him to write up the service ticket/receipt. $150 seems VERY high for 1/2 hour of drain cleaning, and especially when he wasn't even working the whole time. I won't be using A-1 Sewer and Drain Cleaning again. read more

If I could rate with 0 stars, I would. Three technicians came and did nothing but leave a mess. Sewage was not getting backed up in the laundry in the basement before. I was at least able to use water conservatively. Now, it is impossible to even turn on the faucet for a glass of water. Laundry room gets flooded. House is filled with sewage gas because they left it open and a huge mess. Called multiple times to answering service and after 2 hours tech calls and says there is nothing he can do. I would have to get it fixed by the sewage repair company He was completely oblivious to the fact that the house is not livable and I have two pets who are also put at a risk. The answering service was rude and pretty much said it's on you and they don't care what I do. They will just pass the message along It is better to burn your house to the ground than calling this unprofessional, rude ignorant company. They don't care about the people living in the house. Our sewer was backing up shortly after we moved into our new house. A guy from A1 came out and pulled some baby wipes out of the sewer line the previous owners left for us, along with a few tree roots. One week later the sewer was backing up again and they would not warranty the work due to the baby wipes. I don't think they got the line cleared out right the first time and just assumed the wipes were the clog. If you want to spend $100 a week to get your sewer unplugged, these are your people. I don't so I won't be using them again, nor will I recommend to anyone. Thanks for nothing. read more

I called when our basement was backing up and our sink wouldn't drain... they came out the next morning and Jeremy was very friendly and helpful he got my sink draining and unclothed the basement drain that was backing up... couple days later went down to the basement and it was full of water again from the drain that was cleaned ... I called and ask if they could come take another look they said they'd put me on the schedule for next day ... I stayed home from work and called at 10am to verify they were coming and she assured me they were... now at 6pm no plumber .. I called and nobody picked up so I left a message I also called and texted the plumber Jeremy who help us out before and no response from him either.... we can't use any water because it just keeps coming up in the basement... no shower, toilet, dishes, nothing... I read reviews and thought you will have good and bad... then when they came I was impressed but now I am so disappointed and very upset... they could have let me know and I would have just called another plumber ... so now I paid them for a job that wasn't done correctly and I missed a day of work and they didn't come back to honor their work ... I never write reviews but this is unacceptable! you should take care of your customers read more

We had to have A-1 come out to our house 4 times in a week and still didn't get the job done. The last time they came out the owner him self came and disrespected me, our house, and our town. They have a major lack of communication between themselves and their costumers. I finally had to call a different company to get our issues resolved. Great service. Had a clogged sink line, they came out and cleared it. The line was really clogged and unfortunately it needed to be cleared a second time - they came back for a return visit on a Saturday at no charge, problem seems to be completely fixed.
