It was my first time coming here in a few years. Since COVID times, I've decided to save my hair so I got it to about 6-inch length. I wanted to go back to shorter hair so I selected this barber shop because I trusted them to get my hair back to normal. When it came to my turn, I felt like the two barbers didn't want to cut my hair, it was like they were making excuses and slowed down so that they didn't have to be the one to cut my hair. I can hear them smirking and making little comments to one another. I showed a photo of how I wanted my hair to be cut and it sure didn't look like that when finished. When I got home, I took out my hair clipper and had to re-trim it myself. The vibe of this barbershop was off this time. Don't recommend this Barbershop, not 1 bit at all. Got here 20 minutes before they were supposed to close. At least that's what the sign on the door says.And the door was locked, guys inside were standing around just looking at me. Only needed a quick five minute beard trim.. Great barbershop at great prices. My barber went up to 50$ for a haircut and shave and I had to go somewhere new and came here. Great place with cool people. The barbers are friendly and welcome anyone who walks in the door. I got my cut with Joe and he did a great job, I moved to NC from NY 2 years ago now and have not been able to find a barber who left my beard looking as good as my old barbers in NY did for a while, but Joe definitely did it! I emailed again and got this non-descript response: "Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed. I have to say that the safety warnings they advertise on their website don't mean much if they won't even acknowledge the mandatory mask policy. People, it's just no worth risking your health and safety, certainly not your life. You are just better off going to a stylist who will see you solo. My barber was fantastic, everyone was friendly, and I had really enjoyed the experience. I say, I "had" -- UNTIL they had a guy come in and seated him right next to me WITHOUT A MASK. I should have said something about it, just it was as I was being finished and paying my bill. Still, that is no excuse whatsoever. I can't return to any place that won't put my safety first -- both customers who don't follow mask mandates and staff who don't make them follow them. This will probably become my go to barbershop. I was going elsewhere for price but I dislike very much wasting my time! So I looked up places near my home and two shops showed up. I decided to message both businesses and this one wrote me back, so I went there at opening time. There was plenty of parking, probably because it's 10am on a Monday. I went in and was greeted by one of the barbers. I sat down and the shop is well decorated. There's a beverage area which also features beer! Too early today though. I wanted to be there first but customer were already inside, so I waited. It was about 15min later that I was next. I sat down and chatted with Barber. I'm not so sure why this place has 4.5 stars truthfully. I'm not someone who writes reviews but I was dangerously misled to this barber shop with its ratings that are either outdated or completely inaccurate. I've been here a few times with my satisfaction declining each visit to the point I won't be returning. First, it's always, always crowded - everyone seems to get their hair cut here for some reason. Probably for the same reason I went, trusting others who have been around to other shops that have rated this one highly. The guys here understand wholeheartedly they will have dudes coming in the door for a haircut and waiting but run their mouths more than cut hair. It's incredible. I feel like I'm in a salon. They could easily double or TRIPLE the amount of people that came in the door if they'd just be quiet and focus on what they are there to do. You seriously wait over an hour on average for a seat. Now on to the actual haircut - I've seen each of the barbers there now and have gotten a completely different haircut each time. Joe is the best and the other dudes aren't paying attention whatsoever. I went to another shop after my decision to stop going here and he informed me I had a huge patch in the back of my head that was missed and he was actually taken aback as to how someone could have let me leave a barbershop that way. One of them spends more time in the back/bathroom than cutting hair and is constantly in and out while 15 dudes are sitting there waiting. Then they charge you $30 and send you on your way with patches and a weird feeling of "what just happened?". Obviously I thought it may have been the specific barber so I had rotated but it's not even close to worth it. These guys will also trash chains barbers like Arrow because they claim it's a bad haircut or something of that nature - truthfully I've been there a few times and it's 10x better. Reserving your barber alone and spending at most 30 minutes indoors is enough to make you never go here again. Your haircut will be more than fine, just rotate barbers until you find someone you like if you have a bad experience. I was aggressively sexist about having women cut my hair until I needed one bad and had no other option - the best barber I've ever had was a woman at Arrow who ended up going on maternity leave and didn't come back. She is easily the woman I now miss most in my life and I hate her baby for taking her from me. I didn't love who I tried next (also a woman) but even she ran circles around these guys, I chose the convenience of location given I'm now in Cary over the convenience of reserving a time, and I just wanted to try something new - I am SPRINTING backwards. My wife & I travel full time so getting a good haircut can be somewhat iffy. I was able to research for barbershops in Cary NC and found A Better Man's Barbershop and thought I'd give it a try. They do walk ins and cash only. Upon arrival the barber's greeted me and I could tell they enjoyed working together and there was plenty of good conversation and multiple TV's. A short wait and Lafayette seated me in his chair. I have mobility issues and walk with crutches, he was very accommodating in helping me get situated. The shop was fun and Lafayette was great! I'd highly recommend this shop if you're looking for a shop. I'll definitely come back again if we return to this part of the country. read more

I went here with my husband, and the man who cut his hair did a wonderful job. My husband has never grown his hair out before so he has no idea how to style mid length curly hair, and instead of laughing at him for not knowing (which others have done at another place in Apex, so we left) he was incredibly helpful and told him about different styles here could do and about adding mousse and scrunching. Bottom line: A Better Man's Barbershop is a good classic barbershop with a hint of modern thrown in. The complimentary beverage while waiting is a plus. I like the environment, the location, and the results they give. They are a cash only establishment however. I am a fan! The Deets: I've come by A Better Man's Barbershop a few times lately when scheduling etc. does not permit me going to my regular barber in downtown Raleigh (they are close in location to me)...these guys do a good job. This shop is a true to old school type of feel with a bit of the modern thrown in. You can have a complimentary beverage (including one craft beer selection of their choosing on draft/chilled, and the max beverage limit is 2 here per website) while waiting for your turn. Most all of their business is walk in business, so when you enter the shop make sure you mark/remember who was there before you and wait your turn...which could be a while since these guys are pretty busy most of the time. However, they do a good job with moving customers through for the most part here. As far as outcome, most of my visits result in pleasing results (I get a head shave and beard trim frequently) and I like their style. There's that old school barbershop camaraderie here also where they get to know you, especially if a repeat customer, and have a rapport as well as the day's games are on the TVs also to enjoy. One thing to remember, they are a cash only shop so put the plastic away...unless you are going to use their ATM in the corner. So, in all, I dig A Better Man's Barbershop and they will continue to see me in the future when I can't make it into DTR to my regular barber. read more

I had moved back to the area and was looking for a place to get my hair cut. I'm pretty picky and particular and definitely wanted to find a solid, consistent barber. So I tried out A Better Man's Barbershop. Boy, am I glad I did. At first I was a little worried, as you come in and it's typically a first arrived, first served system, and you normally get whatever barber is up next. However, if you want to, you can wait for a particular barber to open up. Meanwhile there's free beer, free coffee and usually soda, sports TV and always a fun and enjoyable conversation. It's just a cool and fun guy's place to hang out. After getting haircuts from just about all of the barbers, I realized my fears were unreasonable. I've been pleased with the quality of cuts from all of the barbers, so now I just go with whoever is available next. In addition to haircuts, they do beard trims, straight razor shaves, men's facials, and assorted services. I find them extremely reasonably priced, quick and always a very pleasant experience. Despite there being many salons and barbershops between my house and A Better Man's, I make the 15-20 minute trip. It's well worth it. Tell 'em Mario sent you, if you go. I was too alarmed by how cavalier they were about mask wearing to stay and risk getting Covid. Yes, they boast on their website about how they have air purification and they follow cleaning guidelines but I don't think that's nearly enough. Specifically, I watched as one of the barbers let his mask steadily slip off his face and then he and a maskless customer stood less than three feet from each other while they talked and settled up their transaction. read more

So... background. I used to be like most guys. Get your hair cut at the closest superchain hair cuttery place. You know the names - they advertise how cheap their prices are, and if you go to the same place for more than a year, you're likely to have seen their entire staff come and go a couple of times. There's no consistency, but that's what we get used to - because, for a long time, that's all there was. Eventually, I 'upgraded' to a chain that advertised that it was for men, with this whole locker room sports theme. You know the place. And, if you've been there, you know that, other than the interior decor, the haircuts are no different than SuperClips or GreatCuts. You walk out with your hair shorter, but maybe you have this nagging feeling that it could be.... BETTER Then you meet someone who has great hair. I mean.... stellar, movie-star hair. And you think... Why can't I have hair like that? That happened to me. In the midst of my hairstyle malaise, I met a guy - running buddy, and this guy... I'm telling you, he has PERFECT hair. PERFECT. I've seen him run half marathons, and at the end, his hair was BEAUTIFUL - not a single strand out of place. If your'e a distance runner in the Raleigh/Cary area, you probably know EXACTLY who I'm talking about. I harassed him and made fun of his perfect hair. But the truth is, I wanted hair like that. I NEEDED hair like that. So, I asked him where he cut his hair. He laughed me off. It took a YEAR of laughing at his jokes and buying him post-run beers before he let me in on his secret, but he finally told me where he got his hair cut. And let me tell you, that investment was totally worth it. It was not this place. It was a different barber shop in Cary, and I tried it. And I gotta say, my hair never looked better. It was, honestly, near the rival of my friend's perfect hair. And if you ever met him, you'd know just what a compliment that is. The main difference is that when I run half marathons, my hair looks like a cross between a drowned rat and a porcupine. And not in a good way. I went to that other place for a year. But their hours started dwindling, and it became increasingly difficult to work my schedule around what became 8-5, M/W/F hours. I was desperate. I just couldn't bring myself to go back to those massive chain places, so, in desperation, I tried out A Better Man's Barber Shop. And I'm so glad I did. Because now my hair is BETTER than my friend's perfect hair. And, on top of that, I get free beer and an experience that is not unlike the way movies portray old style barber shops from the '50's - without the side of racism that was prevalent in that era, but I digress. The barbers (real barbers, not hair stylists - there IS a difference) remember regular customers' names, haircuts, and ask about things that you mentioned the last time you were there. They are like this amazing mix of bartender and barber, and that goes a long way to making you feel at home. Now... I will say a couple of things. They only take cash. Be prepared, or use the handy ATM in the shop, but pay the convenience store ATM convenience fee that we all gripe about while we pay it anyway. Second... Try the beer. It may not be to your liking, but it's a rotating tap, and maybe the next time it'll be better. And it's certainly a great way to discover something new. Third... Take your boys. Um, if you have boys. I took my son there, and now he doesn't want to get his hair cut anywhere else. It's a huge bonding experience. Fourth - leave your girlfriend or wife at home. It's not like anybody's telling off-color jokes or anything, but there are precious few bastions of manliness left, and a real barber shop where you can get a straight razor shave is definitely one of them. Don't harsh that vibe for other patrons, and don't be the guy who has to get approval from anybody else for a freaking haircut. My hair still looks horrible after a long run, though. My husband came here during our last visit to NC. The place was opened by 3 guys who renovated the man cave space themselves. Really nice space catering to guys including magazines, old stadium seats, and a keg of craft beer (2 glass limit) for patrons to enjoy while waiting for their haircut. In addition to all this great atmosphere and the beer perk, they gave my husband a really great haircut - one of the best he has received in a long time. I have seen Anthony a couple times and he is just fantastic at cutting hair plus just a great guy. He quickly understands what you are looking for and cuts it till it is just how you want it. On top of great cutting services they have multiple TVs with games or ESPN on and free beer is included. Stopped in after work to check out this place, and get a badly needed haircut and beard trim. Brandon and Anthony were working and were very cordial when I came in. The place smells of old school barber/grandpa's shaving kit - i.e manly/bad ass. Brandon sat me down and got to work. Anthony got me a nice brew and it was a chill experience - big screen TVs with ESPN, interesting conversation and skilled barbering (including straight razor back of neck trim). When it was all said and done, for a few more bucks than Great Clips, I had a vastly superior experience and no annoying up selling of tea tree oil shampoo. read more
