At the suggestion of my Yelp friend Anne C, I visited A Cupcake for Later while I was in Willimantic for the day. Appropriately, I was not buying cupcakes for contemporaneous consumption. They were indeed for . . . Later. I bought 5 different flavors to share with my family. I bought two lemon, because I definitely wanted to try the lemon. I also bought a Chocolate Peanut Butter, a Biscoff,, a Salted Caramel Butter Pecan, and a Strawberry. I tried the lemon and the Salted Caramel. The cake and icing in both were fresh, and had good flavor and texture. The flavors were accurate to description. There was a small reservoir of flavoring that extended from the bottom of the icing layer into the cake. That's always a nice touch in my book. My one note rating-wise, is that the cupcakes were not as ornate as the top tier CT cupcake places I've been to. Still tasty though. I knew I was in heaven the moment I walked into the door of this little 'cakery.' The air was full of the fragrance of all the goodies within. I ordered cupcakes for a birthday celebration for my husband who lives in a nursing facility. I picked them up the day before and they were perfectly packaged for travel. After keeping them refrigerated as required they were fluffy and delicious. The fillings and toppings so rich and fresh! They disappeared as if by magic! I sampled the lemon cream, Boston cream and the carrot cake. But the menu is quite large and price points vary by size and "fanciness." You're sure to find something delicious for an event or just to have with a cup of tea. They make cakes as well from small size to all size wedding cakes. I stopped by here randomly when I was in the area, initially wanted a smoothie but the place I arrived at was closed on Tuesday & this place came up in place, and I'm so glad they did! They had sooo many different types of cupcakes. I ended up getting 6 cupcakes and the variations on the cheesecake cupcakes were all delicious! It was literally the best cheesecake cupcake I had ever had in my life. They have to stay in the fridge though. I will definitely return the next time I am in the area! My husband and I decided not to go waste money on a big wedding, partly because we could barely agree on anything. The one thing we did agree on: cupcakes from this place. So many amazing flavors, all with delicious buttercream frosting and many with delicious cores. I love the lemon, white chocolate raspberry, carrot cake ... there's really no losers in the bunch. Big enough to share, but also fun to take home, as the dense, soft cake will firm up nicely and hold up to a day or two in the fridge. Came here for the first time after living in the area for a few years now. You can say I've been missing out on some wonderful gluten free cupcakes! There were like 4 different options too not just the standard one like a lot of places have. Now they are labeled as gluten sensitive but they are made with all gluten free ingredients. My husband has celiacs and he took a chance and was totally fine, take that as you will. We will definitely be coming back for more. I read a review that they don't support the local police but if you go inside their establishment and see all their decor I gotta say, I find that hard to believe. Where do I start!?!? My niece wanted a coconut cake with cream cheese frosting for her birthday party. I decide to support a local bakery instead of one by me in the city that was my worst decision. First mistake. I went in person to order the cakes, one that my niece requested and another for those guest that didn't like coconut. The owner was sooo RUDE! Acted like she didn't want our business, I even asked her, is there a problem? wish I would have read the reviews that she doesn't care for minorities, would have NEVER ordered from there. I should have went with my instinct and left the moment she gave me at attitude. Second mistake, Day of the party my brother in law goes to pick up the cakes around 11, they aren't even ready, mind you the order was placed 5 weeks prior. She yelled at him, that he was early and needed to come back later, I called her to question why the cakes weren't ready and she says "oh I didn't look at the slip, it will be ready by 12!" He arrives at 1150 and she starts yelling at him again!! "why are you here? It's not 12! They aren't ready?" He replied no problem I can wait. Finally 15 min later, cakes are ready. Third mistake, cake time, the coconut cake we were so excited to taste was DISGUSTING! super dense, not even a fork would go through it, tasted like clay. Super waste of my money. Fourth mistake, called to complain about the cake but get no response, or the owner is not in. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! GO ELSEWHERE. Please chose a different bakery. read more

My now husband and I needed a cake and/or cupcakes for our up coming wedding. I knew the owner, Cheryl, from a cupcake decorating class probably 10 years ago, and shortly after class she opened her own business. I had not tried her cupcakes yet (regrets this now), but decided to call Cheryl and set up and appointment to try them. We arrived at the shop, which is a good size place. It's a cute cafe style place, with room for people to sit and enjoy a cupcake. She has multiple regular flavors, as well as seasonal flavors. She let us pick a bunch of cupcakes to try, so we tried 4 flavors that stood out to us. Each cupcakes was delicious! Mind you, I have taken cake classes and did my own baking for quite sometime, as well as my family... but Cheryl's cupcakes blow mine out of the water! The whipped cream frosting is to die for... the cake is moist (sorry for using that word, but not sure how else to describe it) and not dry at all... she also has creative fillings like apple pie, then puts a small slice of cheddar on top! We were not able to try that flavor the day of, due to it being seasonal... however my dads a huge apple pie person so we went and took a chance with that flavor, along with 3 other flavors. She suggested we choose 3-4 flavors (for 100 people) so people have choices. She also suggested ordering 120 cupcakes for 100 people because some folks like to take more than 1. She was totally right- every cupcake went! I also ordered a cake top so we can actually cut a cake. We ordered any flavor we wanted. I ended up with white cake and strawberry (I didn't want chocolate in my teeth LOL). Honestly we didn't even have to look at another cake place we were so impressed with Cheryl, we booked her immediately. So happy we did. Everyone raved about her cupcakes. I also believed pricing was fair, going price for fancy cupcakes. She came and set up at the event with her husband, right on time. She also let us borrow a choice of cupcake stand if we didn't want to buy one. We just had to return it within 5 days of the event. I will gladly do business here anytime I need cakes or cupcakes... We were excited about the variety. Some tastier than others. Sometimes the frosting/cake ratio is different on each cupcake. Pricing does not seem to match, either. However, the biggest let down was when we ordered a bday cake. After much discussion we discovered that the design was not anything we requested. Pretty good cupcakes- I got the hot cocoa, carrot cake, salted caramel and the last I can't remember they were alittke on the drier side,and quite cold so I thought maybe that's why they were alittle dry- but they were fluffy and tasted good. My 2 complaints would be the price. $3.50 for. Cupcake is up there.. In my opinion. And the packaging they come in tore them apart when I went to take them out of box- they have a pink box and in the box is a seperater so the cakes don't touch but I think it is to tight around them.. My fiancé and I were looking forward to our tasting with Cheryl even though it was quite the drive from where we live. My fiancé works until 4:00pm so Cheryl and I made the latest appointment she could 3:00 pm so he could attend. Upon arriving Cheryl argued uncomfortably with us back and forth stating that we missed our 1:00 pm apt. As the customer we tried to take the higher road by apologizing and offering to come back but Cheryl continued to be visibly frustrated and rude to us in return, dropping the plate down "well which do you want?" while turning her back to us. In the end it wasn't the clear miscommunication in meeting times that turned us away, it was the way Cheryl handled herself. She was rude and difficult to do business with. I am truly stunned by the way she treated a potential customer especially one looking to purchase baked goods for a 200 person wedding. What was supposed to be a milestone experience, cake tasting was ruined by Cheryl's demeanor and lack of ability to accommodate for simple miscommunication. I left her shop crying and disappointed. These are the best cupcakes I've ever had! I used to work EMS in the area and we would stop in and get a cupcake whenever we could. My mom bought gluten-free cupcakes here for my birthday yesterday. I'm celiac and allergic, we were so excited to have found a new GF bakery since our old one closed. The strawberry and salted caramel cupcakes were INEDIBLE and absolutely disgusting. So dense and dry it was unpleasant and tasted badly too. I had to throw out my own birthday cupcakes. If you love cupcakes, do yourself a favor and go to A Cupcake for Later. You will not be disappointed. I often pick up cupcakes for customers, so I have tried more than my share and I would rate ACFL's chocolate salted caramel as one of the best I've ever had. I'm not a fan of hyperbole, but it's warranted here. The frosting is whipped cream and not buttercream and not buttercream, so it's not too sweet, but just right. This one has a bit of chocolate on top of the frosting and then caramel inside. Too often cupcake fillings are a disappointment with too little, but there's plenty of caramel inside this perfect cupcake. And cake part was also right on the mark, nice and moist with a great chocolate flavor. Everyone here seemed super nice. I'm so glad I stopped in, but it's probably a good thing I live nowhere near Willimantic because I'd be having far too many of the treats here. But if I'm in the area, I am definitely treating myself. I stopped here during the Victorian Days weekend and was pleased with some of the offerings downtown. Delicious! The cake is moist, the icing is sweet and flavorful and just the right texture not whip cream based or hard butter. The fillings in the middle are what makes these little cakes the best. Nice selection of gourmet cupcakes and fun to have this unique dessert option around. However, I haven't been thrilled with the product for the price ($3.50/cake). Ive visited a few times and tried several options. The ratio of cake to frosting to filling is always off for me. I get rid of half the frosting each time and am always wishing for more cake. Maybe it's just a personal preference. The cupcakes have always seemed wet too. Like they were sweating in the case all day or had been out in the open for a while. If I had to choose a favorite it would be the chocolate peanut butter cupcake. Again, fun place for the town but for the price I want more. read more

I live in Los Angeles, but grew up in Willimantic. I would love to give a good review. I emailed about having a delivery made. The answer was quick and succinct: "That depends on on what you are looking to have delivered. We really only deliver for large parties. Please feel free to call the shop of you would like to further discuss." I then called and spoke with the owner, Cheryl Preston. She was less than gracious on the phone. Told me it wasn't worth it to deliver half a dozen cupcakes. I even offered to pay whatever she wanted as a delivery charge to no avail. She even stated that I would not find anyone local who would deliver; a very sad statement. At this point I went to online delivery companies and made a purchase. I would love to have been able to spend my money in the city I grew up in. That option is not available with this company. I live in a very large city and perhaps I've become accustomed to good service because of all the competition. This made me realize what a good thing competition is for the consumers. My husband and I stopped in this bakery on an impulse because of their cute sign. It is a bright, clean bakery with plenty of seating right in the lovely downtown section of Willimantic near the famous "Frog" Bridge. There is off-street parking next to the bakery although it is a small, steep lot. The three staff working inside were all friendly and happy to let us browse the goods without pushing sales too aggressively. They had about a dozen different cupcakes styles/flavors on display in a case located near the back of the dining area. According to the signage, some cupcakes are everyday offerings while others are daily specials. The desserts are all $3.00 a piece. Steep but since it was our first stop in a genuine specialty cupcakery, we decided to buy 5 different ones and let the kids sample them at home. Not sure of the official names of all of them. We bought a Boston Cream, A Hot Chocolate, A Tropical Pineapple, a Praline Maple and a Chocolate Strawberry Cream one. All the cupcakes were richly flavored and moist. They were somewhat larger than an ordinary cupcake with generous portions of frosting on top. The individual flavor combinations were well thought out and delicious. We had a taste of each one of the cupcakes as the kids were eating them and it was difficult to choose which one was superior. My favorite was probably a toss up between the chocolate strawberry or the maple praline but honestly they were all so good, that a case could be made for any one of them. These bakers know what they are doing. They are creating unique and delicious desserts that blow just about every other cupcake I've ever had away. I highly recommend you try this bakery if you are in or near Willimantic. It is an exceptional place that sells a truly superior product. I am so glad I stumbled on this place. She took the time to sit with me and my husband to discuss all of our options. I came across this shop accidentally because I parked in front of it. I saw someone closing up and I wondered if I could sneak in to get a cupcake before they closed. She pleasantly welcomed me in. This is when the magic happened for me. I walked in and it smelled deliciously like cake baking in the oven. Why is this surprising, after all it's a bakery? Well, for some reason, most bakeries I enter do not smell like someone's kitchen in the mist of baking a cake. Yum! So before I even saw the cupcakes, the bakery already had me at the magnificent scent of baking. Then, I saw the cupcake beauties.
