Best donuts ever. Stopped by just after 11 on a Saturday and there were a good number of donuts left, including their banana split donut! Get that. It's unique, it's amazing, and I happen to love bananas. The counter lady told us they have the best cream cheese frosting anywhere. I ordered the maple long join - and my husband ordered his and we found out they were filled with custard. Of course I couldn't say take it back because that's not Midwest nice . So I got the Apple fritter also as my back up . I asked for a coffee, but they only had drip so I was like yeah this is a special day. No thanks to the coffee. So we weren't feeling too good about what we got from the bakery . We could tell that she really was more of a commercial baker so I really wasn't sure what we're going to get. So I tore a chunk of the apple fritter off, and I was blown away . It was the best apple fritter I've ever had in my entire life. Later that night, I decided to try the maple long John despite the fact that there's custard inside it . It was the best efffing donut I've ever had . I hate custard - but this custard was light and creamy and zero greasy after taste. I will think of these donuts for the rest of my life and all others will fall short. read more

Stopped in to A Dozen Excuses just a few minutes before nine am on a weekday.  They bake everything fresh here daily and their day starts really early, so I was delighted to find that they still had lots of different donuts available. I got a box with a dozen different donuts and we loved each and every one - they were all completely delicious and wonderfully fresh :-) All the staffers working behind the counter were friendly, fast and helpful - I KNOW I'll be back next time I'm in the area! read more

Get there early if you want an amazing strawberry frosted doughnut! The doughnut itself is delicious and light, and the frosting is also light and sweet with real strawberries mixed in! I'm not a fan of super goopy and ridiculously sugary frostings, so this was perfect! Today I am trying a butterfingers doughnut! read more

My mother and aunt ordered a cake for my baby shower this past weekend. They had gone to the store and sampled cake and fell in love with an almond flavored cake with Bavarian cream. They proceeded to order this for the main cake and then ordered 60 cupcakes in vanilla and chocolate. The cupcakes were horribly dry, making it difficult to swallow them. The buttercream frosting on the top was an inch thick and so sweet every person scooped this off. The cake was a completely screwed up order. It was supposed the be a lightly tinted pink cake with a white frosting that was sprayed pink. It was neon pink frosting with white cake. The cake itself was supposed to be almond flavor with Bavarian cream. Not one guest could taste the almond and the middle cream was a horrible, thick, way-to-sweet butter cream, same as the buttercream on the outside. The cake itself was very dry. Not one guest finished their piece of cake. Overall, the cake and cupcakes tasted like they were made 3 days ago. The rest of the cake went in the garbage can. When my aunt went to pick up the cake, it was 80 dollars more than was quoted. And the check-out gal was trying to push them to give a tip on top of the much larger bill. The only joy out of this cake was the owner pushed her cards on us to put by the cake so people knew where we ordered this from. At least all the guests at the party will not be tricked I to ordering horrible deserts from this bakery. read more

If you're in downtown Duluth, do yourself a solid and drive 10 mins to quaint Superior, Wisconsin. I didn't know what to expect since this place hardly had any reviews or pictures but I was truly blown away by the best donuts ever and a really awesome space. We will be back! read more

Best coneys in town! Wait, at a donut shop? YESSSS! My mom and I visited A Dozen Excuses on small business Saturday for lunch, we had coneys with a sample of pumpkin cake that was to die for. The owners were very friendly, they told us they make the buns from scratch and the coney sauce was homemade as well. We also learned that they like to do things the old fashioned way by making the donuts from scratch early in the morning and when they're gone they're gone. So get here early! read more

Honestly wishing I could give this place 0 stars. Even though the poor young girl at the front counter was extremely nice, the management and customer service of the people running this place is HORRID. I absolutely hate giving reviews like this but people should be warned before taking their business here.... I didn't even get a TRUE/final confirmation on my WEDDING CAKE the DAY before the wedding- they just couldn't get it together and Melissa was completely terrible in communication and rude every time we spoke. However.... the cake was pretty good, even looking past that it wasn't what Exactly what I ordered, but if you take your chances here I hope you enjoy the results after the hassle. read more

It's about time the Twin Ports got a donut shop, and this one is as good as can be asked for. The donuts consistently delicious and the variety makes me so happy. I have tried a couple different donuts every time I've been here (about a half a dozen times) and I'm yet to sample everything they offer. The family atmosphere is so welcoming and I can't wait until the next time I can visit. Make sure to get there early though, sometimes they run out of the more popular donuts. read more

Came around 1:30 pm and we got the LAST three donuts! We were bummed there wasn't more but it was still worth it. Owners were SO nice and hospitable. We had a plain cake donut and some strawberry cakes donuts. EXCELLENT! The strawberry is to die for. Will be back when in town to try more! read more

Had the banana split donut. It was very good. My mother had some raspberry filled one that was glazed and had a little frosting. She enjoyed it. My fiancé had a chocolate covered cake donut and the Boston cream filled and they were great! Four donuts was $5.95. So a little pricey but I don't mind when I am supporting local business. read more

We arrived an hour before they closed (they close at noon) so they had a limited selection. I got a cake donuts with chocolate and some kind of candy topping. My husband got a cooney dog. Both were very good. read more

Donuts were great. Service and "regular customer" were rude. I was patiently waiting in line behind a family deciding which donuts to purchase. Then I was in line for 1 donut and the "regular customer." She was annoyed at how long it was taking, so she went up and made the lady behind the counter sell her her 1 donut. Then I said I was in line waitin to buy and she sai "well, speak up." Instead of waiting in line she cut and made the family in front of me and myself wait. She was beyond rude and the lady let her do it, Bc she's a regular. Never again will we return. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. read more
