Being from California, I was excited to try this place out as there doesn't seem to be many options for Mexican in Madison. I walked in and was immediately greeted by a kind host. I could smell the delicious food upon stepping in, and the warmth inside was a much needed reprieve from the snow outside. I asked for a Jamaica drink, and was pleased upon tasting it. Just like my mother's. This gave me the confidence to order the alambre, as it's a favorite of mine back home. It comes served in a skillet, with a side of beans and rice, and 5 tortillas. This would be too much to eat for many, but I enjoyed it so much I ate it all in one sitting. My only comment is that I'd like if a side of salsa come with the food. I had to make do with the salsa from my chips and salsa. Luckily, since it was just me, that was just about enough. Cute little place right off State Street! I haven't had a bad experience here. Everything is super tasty and typically service is fast. I just went again a couple days ago and they were very short staffed but it was a nice night and the delicious food made up for the short wait! Ok, so all of my fellow Dallasites will probably hang me when I get back home but...this Mexican food was better than any Mexican food I've had in Dallas.....Texas.....did I say Dallas, TEXAS?!?! Yes ladies and gentlemen and everyone in between, this Wisconsin establishment beat all of the Dallas restaurants in Mexican food flavor and quality. I ordered the 3 amigos dish with an horchata. I was pleasantly surprised when the waitress even asked if I wanted my horchata without ice. Wha wha whaaaaat?! I'm so used to restaurants wanting to give you as little bit of horchata as they can by packing the cup with ice. On to the important things. When they brought my order out, I was expecting to get a side of rice and beans. What Mexican restaurant doesn't include rice and beans, right? Well, this dish didn't need it. First bite of the pork tamal, which is topped with a tomatillo sauce and crema, hit me with a ton of flavor. Next up was the carnitas taco. You can't really go wrong with a taco. Tortillas are bigger than some of your traditional street tacos. The chicken enchilada with the red sauce was nicely filled and sauced, being topped really well. There were 10 of us and they were pretty organized and quick with filling drinks up and getting orders. I ordered the quesadilla with chorizo. Our food took longer than normal to come out than most Mexican restaurants I've been too but we did get a basket of chips and salsa to munch on. Our food came out pretty much at the same time which was nice being a big party. My quesadilla was huge! I was only able to eat half of it. I wasn't a big fan of it because there was more meat than cheese so for those of you that like meat - it's a great deal. The rice and beans were basic like most Mexican places. The lettuce came with a cream on it - not a fan. I didn't get any sour cream. It's not in a nice building. The inside is outdated. I think I was underwhelmed on a previous visit but this trip was solid. I got the (carne) asada burrito. The burrito comes lightly grilled or something, giving it a little crunch. Good portion size, especially for the price, but not too big. Chipotle burritos are a bit excessive, right? The fillings have a slightly different hm profile compared to Chipotle, more similar to the rice and beans you get at your typical Tex-Mex restaurant but also higher quality than the standard rice and beans (which is admittedly a low bar). An incredible establishment run by incredibly hardworking people! Before my food came out, my group of 5 and I were given complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was so delicious and very fresh, and the chips were too. Collectively my group and I got refried beans and rice, a cheese quesadilla, a beef nacho bowl, two beef tacos, and one beef burrito with queso on top. Each meal was absolutely delicious, very fresh, and the portions were very filling. I came here for lunch the other day and was very impressed! The waiter was so so nice and very grandfatherly. I felt very welcomed. First of all, the chips are amazing. They're crisp and crunchy and warm and more importantly, not overly seasoned. The accompanying pico de gallo was sour and spicy, which was good, but a little on the salty side. To start, we ordered guacamole with fried tortilla rolls. The guacamole was chunky just the way I like it and it was on the sweeter side, but it worked well with the other flavors. I ordered the chicken enchilada with red sauce. At this point, I was already getting full from all the chips. The shredded chicken was cooked very well - it wasn't dry at all. The rice was so moist that it melted in my mouth, in a good way. I definitely recommend coming here. I don't recommend sitting outside in the summer with all the mosquitos. On a corn tortilla, very thick, refried beans, lettuce, the chicken tinga. I skipped the cheese which our waitress said was Monterey, skipped the sour cream, and added cilantro. It was frickin delicious. My wife had tacos al pastor with double beans(no rice). The pork was very tasty, the beans just mediocre. Added salsa to soup the beans up, that helped a bit. The outdoor ambiance is much better than the indoor section. Indoor space feels more like a grab and go restaurant than a sit down place. After waiting a little bit, a server came around and dropped off chips and salsa (complimentary) and took our drink order. The service was pretty slow, but in their defense I think there were maybe 3 people working. We ordered the cheese dip and it was that super good, melted white cheese....YUM. In addition to being really good, I think the cost of the appetizer was $2/$3. The portions aren't huge but they are priced fairly. I ordered the combo plate (which we waited awhile for) and it had a tamale, an enchilada, and a taco. You could tell the food was really authentic! We ended up both getting drinks as well. The margaritas were ok, I'm pretty sure they came from a mix. 2 drinks, 1 appetizer, and 2 entrees later our bill was only $25. 3 of us visited this restaurant a few days ago. We were struck by how many things they were out of starting with beverages. And then as we placed our food orders there were yet even more selections that they were out of. Finally, after about 15 minutes we were informed that one of the items ordered was out as well. A different selection was made. But within seconds the other food came out while we sat waiting another ten minutes for the rest to come out. I should think the kitchen staff would have informed the wait staff that yet another item ordered was out before preparing the rest of the food order. No apologies were expressed. The food was acceptable but the lack of communication was not. This restaurant subscribers to the same practice of tacking on an automatic tip which we also found unacceptable. My friends and I discovered it one night on a desperate search for margs. And this place delivered. Your typical a la brasa experience will begin with seating at your table and being served with baskets of warm, crunchy chips and flavorful chip salsa. Next, you will be able to order a margarita. I highly recommend the strawberry blended ones- they are delicious. As you munch on your chips and sip your margarita, peer at the menu and definitely get the best thing on the menu: the quesadilla. I cannot emphasize enough how amazing the quesadillas are- especially the ones served at lunch time(in fact, I highly recommend that la brasa serves their lunch quesadilla all day long). This quesadilla boasts the perfect cheese to chicken ratio. It always comes out steaming hot, and the tortilla itself is perfectly crispy. However, be sure to ask for chip salsa to dip it in- it will add just enough flavor to make the quesadilla even better. Overall, a la brasa is everything a restaurant should be. I really enjoy eating authentic Mexican tacos. I ordered from them two days in a row. The first time, I ordered 4 steak tacos. They were great and they only charge $2.50/taco which attracted me to order from there. The horchata was very good that I came back to order again the next day. The second time I ordered their steak Fajitas. It came with rice and beans, and of course, extra corn tortillas. I also really like this Fajitas and tacos. The bean was a bit watery. I went here on a Friday night with some friends, and we got seated right away. It's a small place, but very cozy and has that classic Mexican restaurant feeling. The chips and salsa were just ok - the chips tasted pretty stale. We all got $6 margaritas with chili salt on the rim - they were delicious and a very generous size. I got the Bistec a la Mexicana, and it was delicious! I wanted to eat more, but I was full halfway through the plate. My friends got tacos and the chimichanga, and I think we can all say that they're very generous with their portions. The rice that comes with the dish was tasty, while the beans were just ok. The service was kind of slow, but we weren't in a rush so it wasn't a big deal to us. Overall, I would say this is a solid spot if you're craving some Mexican food. read more

Sometimes the cook has her kids in the kitchen and you occasionally hear the baby cry. Service: 4 stars. We had the same waiter both trips. He is ultra friendly, and very knowledgeable about the recipes and traditional Mexican ingredients. Though this place is listed as Central and/or South American cuisine, our waiter explained that the place transitioned to almost exclusively Mexican since the new owner took over a year ago. They maintain a few Peruvian dishes on the menu. I had to ask for a water refill a few times, but overall good service. Take out is quick, dine in service is not.
