Very famous Paris candy shop, Mere de Famille has been serving chocolates to Parisians since 1761. It was within walking distance from our hotel, so took a leisurely walk on a Wednesday morning. The signage is large outside, and there is a lot of window displays for shoppers. It is not very large inside, and would be difficult to move around if busy. Most of the displays are catered towards tourists, buying gifts to take back home. Prices ranged up to 100€ with beautiful packaging, comparable to what you could get from fine Belgian chocolatiers. You can also get loose chocolates from a variety of bon-bons, truffles, and pralines in the front counter. We ended up getting a small gift of 10 chocolate covered cookies for 13,5€. After the purchase, the cashier gave us a free sample of a chocolate covered wafer...it was so good.

This chocolate shop opened up in SEVENTEEN SIXTY ONE! 1761 - the chocolate and desserts all looked great but I am not supposed to have dark chocolate or caffeine. I could have milk chocolate. I tried a sample - dark chocolate with lemon citron filling - it was like a punch in the taste buds overflowing chocolate and lemon and it was great. I couldn't finish the sample though because of the ingredients. The chocolate was all packaged very nicely for gifts and we bought chocolate for almost everyone we know. I'd give this a 4.7 just on how clean and orderly this place is. And the history - it's impressive! Service was decent - we had a teenager or maybe she was 21 or so - and she knew about every product and was not shy with offering samples. I ate marzipan and I now know that I do not care for marzipan. If you like marzipan - they had a lot of it! In 1761 I am sure it was all the rage! I recommend this chocolatier for yourself and for gifts - and for the history!

Beautiful and delicious local chocolates. Got a ton for friends and family back in the states. Not cheap but not horribly expensive.

So much good chocolate! I stumbled in while walking around Paris. How do you not get local French chocolate if you pass by a local French chocolate shop? So glad I did! This place isn't cheap, but neither is the quality. You pay for exactly what you get. And it's not stunningly expensive. I got about €100 Euro worth of chocolate from this place for friends and family back in the states. It was perfect! I didn't want to get some stupid knickknack that somebody would throw away, so why not share the enjoyment of this delicious chocolate? There is a huge, huge variety of selection, so come prepared to be overwhelmed :-)

I'm not a chocoholic but if I was this is the place I would come to to die! A fantastic array of chocolate, bonbons, nougat, caramels is on display. Boxes of chocolates that you can have custom made as gifts - or treat yourself. The shop looks like a film set with chandeliers, a tiled floor and an wooden cashier kiosk. At holiday times the windows and shelves are full of wonderful seasonal displays - and they're all edible!!! Irresistible!

    Da (candy) babies!

They offered a variety of cookies. You picked your tin box and filled it with whatever you liked. They also had pre made boxes. Very delicious and I love places that provide samples. I dislike buying things that I'm not sure that I'll like. Having a sample will just confirm my willingness to buy more. I recommend stopping by if you're ever in the area.

The store is fairly spacious, and they have a large display right at the front of their signature cookies. They have numerous varieties, so grab a plastic glove and put your selections into a bag. If you get 900 grams of cookies you will get a tin included. They have a large variety of cookies from basic chocolate to fig or apple-filled. These are different from American cookies and have a crumbly consistency like shortbread and a mild, less-sweet flavor. They are delicate and delicious! The filled cookies have a light fruity filling which is just perfect. They have a large variety of other items too including madelines and candies and gift items. The staff spoke great English and were very friendly and happy to help. They offered to ring us up as three separate transactions so we would qualify for three of the promotional discount madeline tins they were offering. Much appreciated! Definitely visit for these unique French cookies, and you too many be hunting for these boutiques wherever you travel!

Angelina, Paris, France -- April 12…read more Our family of four with kids ages 9 and 10 stopped here for lunch after visiting the Louvre, drawn in by its reputation for having the best hot chocolate in the world. We were looking for a place to relax and refuel, and the experience felt a bit mixed overall. Arrival and First Impressions The space is elegant with classic Parisian charm. The line moved quickly, and we were seated with a great view of the dining room. It felt refined but still comfortable. The Highlights The famous hot chocolate lived up to expectations, thick, rich, and almost more like a dessert than a drink. We also had French onion soup and an éclair, both of which were very good. The pastries were clearly well made and thoughtfully prepared. The kids had chicken tenders, which they enjoyed, even though the tomato sauce was a bit different from what they expected. The Challenges The biggest drawback was the price. The meal felt expensive for what we ordered, coming in at €154 for a fairly simple lunch. Service felt slightly rushed as they moved tables along quickly. Final Thoughts We would likely return if we were nearby and specifically craving the hot chocolate again. It is a classic Paris stop and worth trying once, but the value may not justify going out of your way unless that signature experience is high on your list.

It really tastes like melted chocolate with a bit of milk mixed in to make it more drinkable. We went at a bit of an off time, late morning and it wasn't overly busy. We saw our server once and I couldn't recall who he was when it came time to get the bill. I asked a hostess walking by for our check and she told me to ask our server while walking away. We were able to flag another server down eventually but the whole process just took too long. The tables for four have chairs that don't quite tuck in causing for a bit awkward seating. If you like really thick hot chocolate, give it a try but otherwise ok to miss this one. Plenty of good hot chocolate throughout the city.
