My mother had another emergency hospitalization from mid-August to early September, and it was for…read morea seemingly-endless eighteen days.  Fortunately our favorite nurse at the (assisted-living) facility was there when the ambulance took my mother to the hospital - and knowing how we felt about Northwest Hospital (which, unsurprisingly, is a sentiment shared by many people), she begged the ambulance crew to take my mother to Sinai Hospital instead of to Northwest.  Thankfully they complied - but unfortunately it was quite a subpar experience. On the positive side: I spoke to a very nice nurse (Yosef) on 9/1. We spoke to a *very* nice and helpful intern on several occasions (Dr. Reese). The anesthesiologist - Dr. Agree - was *terrific*; incredibly friendly, helpful and patient. On the negative side: The nurse I spoke to twice on 8/27 was very UNhelpful. My mother was moved to a different room twice and no one let me know. The hospitalist - Dr. Kuhl - was terrible about calling us (as in, hardly ever). I called someone in the CEO's office on 8/24 and she never returned my call. *Worst of all* was the fact that the same horrendous cardiology group (from my previous review [of Northwest Hospital]) practices at Sinai Hospital.  Eventually it was obvious that my mother needed to have a pacemaker (surgically) implanted, but the cardiologist continually REFUSED to do the procedure.  Without the pacemaker, my mother would have continued having frequent instances of "blacking out" and it would have been *untenable*.  The cardiologist had the GALL to infer that since my mother is 95, we should choose to let her die instead of taking the (SMALL) chance that she could die during the procedure - and that was DESPITE the fact that we kept raising the issue of her worsening quality of life without a pacemaker, whereas it DIDN'T have to be that way.  After contending with that stubborn and mean-spirited cardiologist for literally a few days, FINALLY - one evening - he agreed to do the procedure.  Everything went *very* smoothly and it has truly given my mother "a new lease on life"; she's much more cheerful and alert.  As an aside; after the procedure was finished, the cardiologist said he hopes he looks as good as my mother does when he's her age (she does indeed look remarkable for 95). I should note that - unlike with my mother's hospitalization at Northwest Hospital - we didn't go to Baltimore this time; I'd hired a wonderful (daily/part-time) aide for my mother after she returned from Northwest to the assisted-living facility, and that aide is quite devoted to my mother.  She even stayed extra hours at the hospital on many days - and without her having been there, we would absolutely have needed to be there. I'm giving three stars (instead of two) because the overall nursing care was good.

Our family repeatedly raised concerns regarding a vulnerable patient's cognitive condition, decision-making ability, safety, and discharge planning. We requested additional evaluation. We requested a second opinion. We documented our concerns. We followed the hospital's procedures. After the fact, we obtained recordings and documentation that directly challenged several statements made by Sinai Hospital in its written grievance response. The hospital's response was not to review the evidence. The hospital's response was to declare the matter closed. That is what I find most disturbing. A grievance process is supposed to be a mechanism for accountability. Instead, what we experienced felt like a process designed to protect the hospital from accountability. Sinai's written response contains statements that our family believes are contradicted by recordings and documentation in our possession. We informed the hospital of that fact. We offered the evidence. We asked for clarification. We asked for review. The answer was no. Not because the evidence had been reviewed and rejected. Because they simply refused to review it. At this point, my concern is no longer limited to the medical decisions that were made. My concern is that Sinai Hospital appears unwilling to examine evidence that challenges its own conclusions. Families place enormous trust in hospitals. We trusted Sinai during one of the worst periods of our lives. If your loved one is vulnerable, cannot advocate for themselves, or if you believe something has gone wrong, understand that your experience may not end when the hospitalization ends. You may find yourself fighting for answers long after the fact, only to discover that the people responsible for investigating those concerns have no interest in revisiting their conclusions. We came looking for accountability. What we found was a closed door.

I have lived at Roland Park Place for over five years and I have no idea what Jt H is talking…read moreabout. This hatch job of a "review" makes me mad. It is dated 2017, two years after we moved in. True, parking is tight but, I took care of that by giving up my car. In the case of necessary travel to doctors appointments there is free door to door service. In normal times we can go on bus trips as far as NYC to films, opera, concerts, etc for a nominal fee. I have never seen or smelled anything bad in the dining room. On the rare occasion when a resident had an accident it was promptly and expertly cleaned up. I have never smelled anything bad. As far as the lobby staff being snotty and condescending nothing could be further from the truth. On one day, when my wife and I moved, in everybody on the staff knew us by name. In fact, I think we are coddled too much sometimes. And tipping is not allowed. At first glance the prices to buy in and the monthly maintenance fees seem pricey, but considering the great number of services and amenities it is it is really pretty much of a bargain. And there is even a fund that guarantees that if you run out of money, thur no fault of your own, you will, not be kicked out. Management rates an A+ in its efforts to keep us health in this time of Covid19 A very important intangible point, that can only be experienced by living here, is the friendship of the other residents. We have an a incredible mix of academics and professionals who are not only very friendly people who are also a joy to talk to and live with. I have made more friends in my five years at RPP than I did in my 60 years in Lutherville. Moving to Roland Park Place was the best move I ever made. I am happy to stay here for the rest of my life

The staff bends over backwards to accommodate in every possible way! They are even not only making it possible to have our unit reconfigured, but they are actively working with the architectural and engineering staff to do the best they can to fulfill our requests. Roland Park Place's activities, programs and events are a dizzying array of intellectual, cultural, health-building, recreational and travel opportunities par excellence. Once an apartment is reserved, the future residents are welcome to take advantage of all activities, programs, and trips. Already, we feel like we are joining a very close-knit family. We recently attended a posh reception that RPP sponsored to introduce us to many other future residents. While many current residents have aged beautifully in place having, however, slowed down quite a bit, we met lots of future residents who are vibrant, colorful, bright, interesting very active folks, many of whom bonded very quickly, discovering that we had many, many things in common. I can NOT imagine another place in which I'd like to spend my remaining years!!! A-AND I can NOT wait to move in. If you have any interest at all in a vibrant, fully alive, stimulating, convivial and beautiful retirement community, I urge you to visit Roland Park Place. You must be an advocate for yourself and especially your elders. The newer doctors or inexperienced doctors are too busy pointing fingers instead of remembering their oath. When they want to get rid of you, they put the not so good staff on rotation of your care. Unsure what the expected outcome they are looking for?!? For those that were good, they were awesome, unfortunately there's no real middle with these folks. Just make sure to be attentive to what is being done and said. It won't be hard to pick up those who are capable and those who are not!!
