Brought in my 96 mustang (75k miles). Emissions test results numbers were really good but she failed to pass. She pointed at the engine and asked "what do you see"? I wondered why she was checking my oil..and she said "your oil cap is missing". I checked the oil level the day before, the dip stick is right next to the cap...her response to that was "and you didn't NOTICE?" it was obvious that there was an opening there...I would have noticed. The oil had last been changed in April, I'd only put a little more than 100 miles on it since...she said they probably forgot to put it on. I check the oil level periodically because it does have a small leak...it's not been necessary to top it off since April. it would have been noticed. Can I prove it was there? No. So I buy a new cap, but this place DOES NOT retest for free...she said she has to charge for retest because it costs so much to run her equipment. I called 4 other smog places in town that I have used over the past many years...all offer retests for free. This was something she did NoT point out when she rang me up ... BEFORE she ran the test...lesson learned. This was NOT about price..hers is pretty reasonable...the conversation and focus on the cost of running the machine when questioning about the charge to retest just had the wrong vibe. Would be wary..suggest going a few blocks into Encinitas and use Encinitas Smog Center on 2nd street. I've used them several times before...their rates are actually lower AND they RETEST for free! read more

Would definitely come back again if I needed another smog test! I called the same day for an appointment later in the day, and she was able to accommodate me at the time I needed. Directions were clear from her to get there, and she was so thorough throughout the process. I sat in her back waiting area and about a half hour later she came to get me - everything was completed, electronic paperwork sent to the DMV, and I was on my way! I have always taken my cars to A Plus smog test only in Carlsbad. They can usually fit me in without an appointment, but having an appointment is always better! They send the test results to the state and within hours you can pay your registration fees, and be good to go! read more

Had to get my first smog of my car this year. That was one of the best things about buying a brand new car, but alas, it's back to the crappy practice of getting it smogged. I called on Wednesday to get an appointment first thing on Saturday morning. They opened at 8, so I arrived right on time. The place is super no frills. It's basically two walls and a roof. You get the nice ocean breeze coming in as you do the thing you hate doing, so that makes it nice. The woman is super nice, friendly, cheerful and she had a huge smile on her face. That's nice because most of the places that involve car maintenance are sweaty, fat guys with bad attitudes acting like their doing you a favor. It was really great to walk through the Encinitas Village to get some breakfast while the car was being smogged. When I came back, she swiped my card, electronically sent the cert over to the state, and I was on my way. I have to say this was the best smog experience I've ever had. When I get that crappy news in the mail again next year, back to A Plus Smog Test Only Center I will go. read more

Came here to get ripped off. The check engine light was on and lit on the dashboard console. She saw it but started the test anyway only to tell me, "the vehicle will definitely fail the emissions test because of the check engine light being on, BUT I've already begun the test and it can't be stopped now." That'll be $70 for nothing! I should have known something was shady when she kept asking me to wait behind the building at a chair under a tree while she conducted the test. Shady business. I was reading the reviews since I need to get my 2002 BMW X5 smogged and last time I went to Encinitas Smog Test Only Center. They were fine and I may have waited a bit but that's normal and their price was fair. I called again to check a couple of places and they were priced at $49.40. Now that sounded great compared to Smog Depot Test only on Cedros Ave in Solana Beach at $84.95... must be the fancy neighborhood and who needs that??? I had to try another just for fun and called A Plus Smog Test at 449 Second Street in Encinitas just down from Rauls. Well to my pleasant surprise Crystal quoted $40 all in. Be sure to verify the price includes everything and ask for the special deal. I finally found something in this economy that is truly competitive other than a taco truck. Also, since they are in the alley behind Rauls they are a little hard to find so ask for directions to be safe. read more

First experience here. Similar to another reviewer, my car's emissions passed easily but the mechanic "discovered" a piece of tape on a ventilation hose, claimed the hose was "cracked" and elected to fail the vehicle. It'll be an additional $99 for new parts and to retest. What is concerning to me is this hose was replaced within the last 3 years, and I honestly have never seen tape on it before. Suspicious to shameful. Recommend taking a photo of your motor prior to taking your chances with this business. read more
