If I could give zero stars I would. You have been warned!! The driver damaged my brand new truck. He got into an accident, and now I have to pay for it out of pocket. This company assumes no responsibility. They are scam artists. First of all, you are taking a huge risk when someone else drives a vehicle that doesn't have them listed under their insurance. ASA takes no ownership of any insurance-related cases that arise. Reading the many reviews, it is evident that customers are not aware of the risks associated with the drivers working for "A Safe Alternative" driving their vehicles. I'm not sure about other services such as Operation Red Nose, but ASA and possibly and other operators may be posing a significant risk to the public because the insurance may not be adequate. Also the customers are not aware of the risks associated with people working for A Safe Alternative driving their vehicles. I will never give them my business again, and continue to spread the word. Recently had a bad experience with this company, gave them a chance to address it twice via email, no reply from the company at all. See below for my email to them... Hello, We've used A Safe Alternative for probably 5 years for both me and my wife's Christmas parties without a hitch. We recently used you again on November 29th for a ride home from the Fairmont Waterfront to Coquitlam (our driver was very nice, and friendly by the way, please pass along our praise). However, our reservation that was booked for this past Saturday did not go so smooth. On Thursday, December 5th at 9:40p, I called and make a reservation (spoke with a woman on the phone, the same woman I spoke with the week before for my Nov 29th booking) to be picked up at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club at 12:30a on Saturday night (the 7th). She took all my info over the phone, and my credit card, as per usual. Saturday rolls around, and it's 12:32a, and no pre-call from our driver as per normal. I call in, speak with a man on the phone who said he'd contact the driver and have them get a hold of me. No call back from anyone. It's now 12:50a, so I call back, speak with the same man on the phone, and this time he asks for my name and number, and says, "sorry, we don't have a reservation under your name". Um, really? I understand that mistakes happen and I truly hope this was an honest mistake. The man indicated that someone could pick us up at 1:45a, but that wasn't acceptable, nor did we trust anyone would actually show. We use your service because it's been great in the past and it keeps our roads safe. We were left with no option to get home since calling a cab at that time in the thick of Christmas parties to Coquitlam is impossible. read more

Very disappointing in the way this company operates. There are far too many hidden charges. What should have been a straight forward charge between $50 and $60 ended up as a $115 charge! A taxi for this same journey costs approx $38. Terrible way to operate a business. They do not care about repeat business. read more

Would give 0 out of 5 stars. Ordered a safe ride for someone else 6 blocks away, told them it was 6 blocks away, cancelled after he left as it took longer than quoted. They told me it was $50 to cancel (no pre-warning as I gave my credit card info to help out someone else who needed a safe ride), so I told them to come and we'd take a 2 minute ride assuming it'd be affordable at which point we were told there was a $49 minimum (which was never mentioned when we said it was a 6 block ride). Total scam artists, will make sure no one we know rides with them, which in this case will make a huge difference. I hope the $50 you illegally took off my credit card was worth it :) read more

My wife and I have used A Safe Alternative on many occasions, we have always found them to be professional and courteous. The price is reasonable for the service provided, it's great to not have to worry about enjoying a night out with drinks, and we like to not have the hassle of getting our vehicle the next day. Highly recommend them A+ read more

THIS COMPANY SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN The most unsafe ride home I have ever had. The driver went into oncoming traffic 3 times ( a car actually had to swerve out of the way not to hit us head on), almost hit the sidewalk numerous times and spent 3/4 of the trip home in the middle of 2 lanes. I asked him to park in visitor parking as I did not trust his driving to park in my garage and he parked ACROSS 3 visitor parking spots. It was demanded I pay in cash when we arrived, despite giving my credit card when I booked my ride. When I looked on my visa statement there was an additional transaction for $82 which in essence, they illegally took money from me. I called to give my feedback on the ride, thinking they would actually care how unsafe the driving was and that there is an unauthorized debit from my visa. It took 6 phone calls to get the extra money returned to my visa (will see if that actually goes through). When I asked for my trip to be refunded due to the unsafe ride and the unauthorized debit from my visa, the response was "good luck honey, thats not going to happen.' He then started to yell at me, when I said I was going to call the Better Business Bureau, the yelling response I got was "Go for it honey, I'll be waiting for their phone call.' I have taken numerous safe rides home and this company is has the worst customer service I have ever encountered. We booked this ride home from Langley to Surrey. Firstly, we had one extra passenger which in the past, the safe ride drivers have always been okay with the extra passenger sitting in with the driver of the second vehicle however this time, the driver refused to let us do that and instead suggested we illegally drive with the extra passenger in our vehicle. Being in our own vehicle and being under the influence, all passengers fell asleep on the ride home, there were two scheduled stops. When I arrived at my home, I was told we have to pay with the credit card we used at the time of booking, however I wanted to use my visa, the driver then told me he did not have a debit/credit machine with him and would have to call in my credit card number to his dispatch. At no time did he tell me the full amount he would be charging to my visa nor did he provide me with a receipt. Early the next morning, I checked my online banking to find that this company had charged me $190 which was to my surprise when I looked up the kilometres from our starting location to the first stop and to our final stop it would have been 26 kms. The company claims to charge $45 for the first 10 km and $2.90 per km after that according to my calculations the total cost should have been $91.40. I then proceeded to all the company to resolve the issues but my phone call was answered by a defensive agent who claimed she could not help me with my issue and that her manager would call me back. Later the same day, the manager called me back and claimed the safe ride was a total of 48 kms and that we told the driver to take a certain route. This made absolutely no sense to me as why would we want to take a further route home and endure a $100 + over charge. The manager who I spoke with was unapologetic and had no plan to resolve the issue. I am writing in to warn others do not book a safe ride with this company as they are clearly out to take advantage of intoxicated customers. I will never be booking with this company again. I now understand why the originally company I was going to go with warned me that ASA A Safe Alternative charges over 30% more than others in the same industry. read more

I've never been treated so poorly than I was when I called ASA last night. The lady told me that it was going to be at least an hour because it was super busy, and that I should call a different business. I'm no stranger to busy nights, and being 2:30 am on Saturday night, I had expected long wait times. When I tried some other companies with no answer, I called back, thinking that I would have to wait an hour and that would have to do. When I called back, the lady straight up snapped at me, told me it would be an hour and a half because "it just got busier" and that if I wanted a car I had to leave my credit card number and there would be a $40 cancellation fee. If she had explained how this worked to me and explained about the wait times etc. I would have agreed, but she was so incredibly rude. That would be like someone walking into the restaurant where I work, and me telling them that we're too busy to serve them, and that they should go somewhere else. I will not be giving these guys my business EVER and I advise you to follow suit, unless you like to be treated like scum. read more
