The tides of Kachemak Bay can reach 25 foot, though salt water fills the slough only when the tide rises above 18 feet. The bay is rimmed with Active volcanoes. The trail starts at Bishop's Beach parking area and goes 0.6-miles to the Alaska Islands and Oceans Visitor Center. The scenery transitions from the gray gravel and sand of Bishop's Beach through a grassy meadow of sedges and succulent plants. Then you ascend a hillside to pass through a spruce forest and finally reach the Alaska Islands and Oceans Visitor Center Visitor's Center. It is interesting to check out the Visitor Center to learn about the plants and birds here, and then go directly out and see them! Lots of plants and some trees on this walk. Also birds, birds, birds. Many of the birds are migrating shorebirds and waterfowl. You might see Canadian Geese, nesting cranes, swans, merlins, wigeons, swallows, sandpipers and others. You have a good chance of seeing a bald eagle or two flying around, or just hanging out in the trees near the Visitors Center. The Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival takes place here in May during peak migration. You can also start this walk at the Visitor's Center, of course, because it has its own parking area. It's located at 95 Sterling Highway in Homer. The trail is now a galvanized-steel grate deck (ADA accessible) to protect the wetland area.

Whereas Clam Gulch is private, Ninilchik is much easier to access, and has free public parking and pit toilets. Both offer amazing views of Mt Iliamna and fishing from the beach.

Brad knew the names of all the beautiful volcanoes in the Aleutian range looming in the distance. We caught a lot of Halibut! The boat was pretty deluxe. I wanted to live on it. Brad filet'd the fish on the way back, and a fish processing boy was waiting for us at the dock. Getting the fish vacuum-sealed and frozen was a cinch! I'd definitely fish with Silver Fox again!

Looks like two or three trucks could fit at a time. Once the boat is in the water, lots of docks. Parked truck and trailer in massive parking lot. Bathrooms located all around. As we started out to the Bay I noticed at least two ramps leading down to the docks. We passed a gas station and a bait station. We left to deep sea fish. Returning from our day of fishing was smooth and effortless really. We pulled up to dock, ran up to truck, load boat, pull up and park next to the fish cleaning station (see photos) cleaned fish and tossed all guts and carcasses in a giant dumpster. Running water and tables. It was awesome.

It was me my husband, our two teenage kids and toddler. My daughter hooked a halibut within the first couple of minutes of dropping her line at the first spot, which got us all very excited. We all really enjoyed ourselves, especially the kids. We went to multiple spots to maximize the amount of fish which we all caught our limit without any problems and also was able to hook a handful of cods. Being that it was a slightly larger boat none of us got seasick, which I was really concerned for being that we are very prone to motion sickness. It was a beautiful day on the sea and we were blessed with beautiful sunny weather. We even got to witness orcas, puffins and sea otters. The office staff was so helpful and responsive to my questions. Due to the laws pertaining to the halibut fishing I took a Salmon and Rockfish trip on the Whistler with Captain Avery Ault. The boat was clean and well maintained. The young man who was our deckhand was attentive and extremely knowledgeable. The captain worked hard at getting us on fish which he was very successful. All of us on the boat met our daily limits in Rockfish and Salmon. Overall a great day. Highly recommend this company!

We charted a boat to do some halibut fishing in Homer with Alaska Coastal Marine. Homer is known as…read morethe Halibut fishing capital of the world and a big destination for outdoor enthusiasts. They are located directly on the Homer Spit. Some of the tours that Alaska Coastal Marine offers are sightseeing and guided fishing tours. Fishing charter packages include half or full days of halibut-only fishing or combo packages with multiple species included like rockfish and salmon. We booked a half day Halibut charter on the Foxfire. We probably spend about six hours out on the ocean. Everything we needed to fish including bait was provided on the boat. Half day charters leave Homer twice daily. We did have a few guys get sea sick as the ride out was bumpy from the choppy waters. But we had a good time and caught a lot of fish. The guides were great and helpful in getting us as much fish as we could until we reached our limit. They even cut up our fish on the way back. Overall, our time with Alaska Coastal Marine and on the Foxfire was a blast. The Homer Spit is a great place to shop and grab a bite to eat after your chartered boat tour. There are places around town that will process and vacuum seal your fish for shipping if needed.

Interesting that there's high reviews here. Well, our charter experience was not well received. We…read morehad a full boat and they didn't provide enough seating to accommodate everyone. This really sucks because it's a 2 hour journey to the fishing area, 2 hour fishing and 2 hours back with no seat. At $185 for 1/2 day a pop I'd expect it comes with a seat. We had a 6 year old who didn't have a seat and we somehow had him propped sitting on someone's cooler. We later discovered there were seats that had life vests placed there. Nobody was offered a life vest except children. Instead the vests were nicely seated where we could have sat. The workers didn't seem to offer or take notice. There were 3 workers on the boat with maybe 20 people fishing, and it was a wait for getting help with bait or lines getting snagged with others. Too much demand not enough supply. I guess this is where they make money on cutting costs for staff and loading up boats. Money hungry charter business. Since we were outside of the boat we saw them filet our fish and placed them in bags, BUT we noticed they take one filet from each fish and put it in a separate bucket. Now that's pretty shady, hence the reason for 1 star. Not only do they take a filet from each fish but the big piece! How scandalous is that?! I asked my brother if this is a common thing with charters and he said they didn't do that with a previous charter he went with. I mean seriously people if you decide to use this charter check if they do this with your fish! Yes we all caught our limit but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone...not even my enemies.
