Great food. Unique, at least in this city. Feels authentic and cozy, but service has its rough edges.

This cute, minimalist cafe is quite small, with no tables and only limited seating by the windows. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find a  number of small groups of people hanging out--sipping on their drinks while chatting, even if it was standing up. I found it added to the local feel of the place, which I enjoyed being a tourist myself. My friend ordered a mocha latte while I ordered a chai latte. The drinks are a bit on the small side, but they really punch the small cup with a lot of flavor and taste. I thought my latte was a bit too cinnamon-y--but honestly just a matter of preference as I still found the drink to be really good. The baristas here seem to really take their job seriously as we admired the delicate care and work they put into making our drink. Here they don't just mix a bunch of stuff together and call it a drink--rather they take the extra time to measure things with precision and prepare everything with a gentle touch. This might explain why their menu is limited, with only a few kinds of drinks and a few pastries...but if it means each drink is of high quality as ours were, then that isn't a bad thing at all.  Another pro was that the baristas were super friendly and spoke good English--adding to the overall pleasant experience here. Definitely recommend this place if you are in the area!

When you walk in it is quite small, no tables or chairs, only the two windows with heaters underneath which they have made into seating areas. The baristas are nice, ours was slovak and she also spoke english. They were very friendly telling us about the place and things like this. I had a cafe latte here and my friend a cappuchino. The sizes of our drinks did seem a bit smaller then a usual cafe (and were in to go cups, not regular mugs) but the quality was still very good. We paid I believe 45 crowns or so each for our drinks. We hungout here for a while just chatting in the window sil turned seat hangout, but beware- no bathrooms here or wifi. Don't expect anything but quality time with yourself or a friend! They do sometimes have little cakes here but nothing substantial, only a coffee place here. Still thought this little place was very cute and cozy. A must stop if you love coffee and are in this area.

It is indeed in a touristy area, but after having walked a few dozen miles in Prague already, on the last night, close proximity and convenience trumps everything else. We made a reservation online and when we arrived we were promptly led to a table in white tablecloth right next to the window in the dining room. For appetizer, we shared a dozen SNAILS - yes, in Prague, even in a French restaurant, they call them snails, not escargots. In fact, Central Europeans had a long tradition of eating snails even before the French made this delicacy famous. The escargots, ok..., snails, were cooked in rich garlic butter mixed with parsley (that's what the green stuff is just in case you are wondering.) They were delicious, and almost as good as those from the streets of Paris. The CHATEAUBRIAND was brought to us on a carving board together with bone marrow, side dishes of vegetables and mashed potatoes, and a sauce boat full of yummy peppery gravy. Our server carved the beef nicely and plated the dishes meticulously at our table side. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender and very flavorful. We could easily tell this was top quality filet mignon and nothing less than the best cut. For the side dishes, I particularly liked the mashed potatoes which tasted like they were made with fresh and naturally creamy potatoes. The peppercorn sauce was rich but not overwhelming, subtly complementing the natural flavor of the steak. Service was 5-star throughout our meal. It began with a complimentary "water melon with bacon" palate cleanser, and ended with complimentary house-made chocolate at the conclusion of our meal. Service was attentive, friendly, prompt but not rushed, and literally white-glove throughout the night. You want me to give you a reason for visiting Brasserie La Gare, or Prague in general? This meal, including two large beers and two glasses of reasonably good wine, cost less than CZK 2,000 which is about US$90. Wanna go?

At first we were thrilled with our server's recommendations and excellent attention, as well as with the cocktails, food, and gorgeous ambiance. The problem occurred toward the end of the evening. Our server cleared our dishes and asked if we were interested in dessert. We said we would be happy to consider the choices. He left us and got busy with another party, which we understood, so waited for about 20 minutes. One of his colleagues passed by and we mentioned that we were waiting. We saw her tell our server, who still did not make time to check in with us. After waiting even longer, one member of our party--originally from England, which becomes important later--got up, found the server, and asked if we could get the dessert menu. Finally he came to our table. He did not apologize for the wait (all he needed to say was that he had gotten swamped, and we would have been fine with that small explanation). Instead, he said, "The hardest part is waiting," mentioned there is no actual dessert menu, then left and came back with a board showing us some of the desserts, explaining what they were. He was obviously irritated with us and so we opted to end the evening and asked for the check. He brought it quickly and pointedly explained that we could tip him. We were uninterested in rewarding his rudeness and did not tip him. Then he insultingly said to our English friend, who was paying: "I didn't think you had an American accent." This was so unprofessional. We go out of our way to be gracious when we travel, not wanting to be seen as "ugly Americans." We tip almost everyone and generously. Your server's increasing rudeness and growing irritation with us was completely uncalled for, and we are so disappointed to have this memory of an otherwise wonderful few days in your beautiful city.
