Today, my 70-year-old mother went in to ask the owner for advice and see what could be done. Instead of offering any help, he was rude and dismissive. Then, when my mom made a sweet, light comment -- saying, "God's been watering the plants a little extra this year" -- he actually mocked her faith and ridiculed her relationship with God. That wasn't just bad customer service -- it was cruel, uncalled for, and incredibly disrespectful. I was shocked. She didn't deserve that, and no customer ever should. They've lost more than a sale -- they've lost loyal, long-term customers who have supported them year after year. From now on, we'll be shopping at Joe's Market Basket, where customers are valued and treated with the respect they deserve.

Being in need, I headed to the nursery that I shopped when I did my spring landscaping. To my surprise, they were out of hanging baskets. The owner who was assisting me, recommended, The Plant Stand. We shared a laugh when I told him they were the closest to my house, but I drove the distance to support him again. He appreciated my loyalty, but thought I'd find what I needed at TPS. I thanked him and started my drive back home. Now let me tell you why I haven't shopped TPS when it is the closest one to my home. It simple is, presentation. It is right on the main drag through Godfrey and it just has never been appealing enough to get me to stop by. I found a hanging basket that meet my needs and will get me through fall. I actually wanted 3, but settled on just one for the front entrance. TPS did have an average selection of plants, some of them were marked down for late season clearance. Shopping up close, I could see why it did not look appealing from the road. Many of their plants were in need of TLC. When selling plants, the dead foliage needs to be picked off, so the plants appear perky and beautiful. Many of the plants were in need of attention to make them buyer friendly. The lady working was pleasant enough and the price of my hanging basket was a good value. Appearance is everything when it comes to buying live plants. A friend, my BFF who lives out in Connecticut wanted to send me a gift certificate to a local nursery as a house warming gift. Researching on-line, she decided to just send me a check for the amount instead, because she did not know which one, I would prefer. I had no idea myself and that is why my cousin stepped in and helped. The day we decided to go shopping, Mother Nature decided to rain that day. We didn't let that stop us. I wore a raincoat, she carried an umbrella and we dodged rain puddles, as we went from greenhouse to greenhouse selecting plants in a yellow and orange theme. I had four huge planters that I moved over from STL, waiting to be put to good use at my new home. I was impressed with the variety and selection of plants available and most of all, I was thrilled with the prices. Shopping at a country nursery made my dollars go a lot further than shopping at a big city one. The associates working that day were helpful and they got a good laugh at my cousin and I having so much fun shopping in the rain. In the case of my yard, manual raking and disturbing the soil just enough for good seed contact were part of the recommended treatment. Fifteen pounds of seed and 23 days of watering later, my lawn was looking pretty good. On the one hand, the price was a bit high for the size of my lawn. On the other hand, there was no pressure to take on additional services on a recurring basis, and the results were very good. PS.: Darn my luck that the day after reseeding, Charter dug up three holes in my lawn to run new cable through the neighborhood. The little bare islands scar my new green ocean.
