When I told my son we were going to re-start sessions at Sylvan for his writing, he entered the building crying. Anthony the Center Director was very patient, developed a good rapport with him that calmed him down, and spoke to him in a way that put him at ease. He seemed to sincerely care about understanding what was going on, to be sure my son was seen, and make that connection. I feel that conversation started my son on the right foot. He believes the staff really cares about his success and about him as a person. My son now really likes (!) going to Sylvan because he sees it as a positive place where people are looking out for him. He has told me a few times that Sylvan exactly prepared him for the work he was doing in class. He had a private tutor before this, but he feels Sylvan's methodology and staff are much more effective for him. His writing is much improved, and the results in his report card show it! The other aspects of what I appreciate about Sylvan compared to a private tutor is that there are several teachers, so there is no missed lesson if schedules don't align with one person ... there is always someone who can give a lesson. Some of the staff are / were school teachers so they are very skilled. Also, you can easily ramp up or down with more or less sessions as you need, and sometimes they can easily identify when other aspects (e.g. grammar) get in the way of the skill you're trying to improve (e.g. writing). I really like that flexibility and those resources with a great staff. During Covid, Sylvan was quick to seamlessly move to online tutoring so students did not need to miss any education. I think Sylvan Piedmont is very well run, with a talented and caring team. I highly recommend it!

Sylvan has increased our son's confidence in school and has reduced my frustration and stress with my son in academics. I can't give a honest review but in 6 months I think I can expect results. My son is enjoying the learn style and Tutors and that is super important. A child needs to be happy to excel. The journey has been short. But will update result and reflections on program. One plus point is that sylvan reaches out to child teacher to make sure needs are being met. I give it a 5 star as I'm happy and needs are being met. I shall update my review if needed. Currently, my daughter is attending and loves it. Because of the pandemic and having to have the children virtually learn, it has been difficult on my very social daughter to keep up. In just a few weeks of attending, we have noticed a huge difference with her attitude towards learning. If you are thinking about enrolling your child, DO IT. It's SO important to invest in your child's education, especially during the younger years. The director Anu is SO AWESOME and will be truly supportive of your needs. I also want to add that one of the main reasons I chose Sylvan was their communication with your child's teacher. They check in with your child's regular school teacher to ensure what they are learning at school is connected to what they practice at Sylvan. Kids are under so much pressure these days compared to when I was in school. Granted that was a…read morelong time ago but it is true. My daughter is in the sixth grade and pretty much a straight A student, except for math. She began slipping behind this past semester and was getting a C in math. This stressed her out far more than me however I convinced her and myself that we could tackle this together. That was until I learned the hard way that this common core BS it literally the most confusing math I have ever encountered. We gave it a week of me trying to teach myself and then her. And then another week of me getting absolutely frustrated. And then by the end of the second week I threw in the towel and started searching for tutors. Initially I was set on getting her a private tutor like I had done for my son 8 years prior. To my surprise and horror? Private tutors were running upward of $140 for an hour of in home tutoring. Ok. They make more than I do. I then decided that was insane and I switched gears settling on Sylvan at West Portal. The start up was pain free, she had her assessment and then headed full steam ahead with the small group math tutoring 2 days per week. There was only 2 months of school left, she had a C- in math going into it and finished the semester with a solid B. The best part of all was the confidence boost she got along with that B. The staff at Sylvan were friendly, easy to communicate with and never tried to push packages on us that we didn't need. Her assessment was so helpful in that it picked up area's where she needed help that she didn't know she even needed help in. The prices were very competitive and although I was hoping to get her the 1:1 tutoring I was limited by the cost and reassured that she would likely do just as well with the small groups. They were correct. There was not a single tutor that Lily did not click with. They were all patient and kind providing updates along the way with her progress. It was all around a great experience and she will definitely return for the math homework group in the Fall. I would recommend Sylvan to anyone who's child is falling behind in a subject and needs a boost. The money spent was well worth it and my girl went into the summer feeling great about herself and her grades.

My younger son, who is in 3rd grade, always did well enjoys coming to Sylvan to learn more advanced work. He is challenged with math 1 or 2 grade levels above him. He is also writing full essays! Sylvan looks at their strengths and weaknesses and personalizes the tutoring according to what they need. They are also super flexible with your schedule!!
