These guys are under new ownership, and Hans was so great. Got in a sticky situation with a flat tire (off the bead) on the beach. Hans responded right away. Very polite and helpful! Pulled the wheel, was able to fix it at his shop and brought it promptly back. Couldn't have been a better, smoother experience. Absolutely the worst customer/owner interaction i've ever had. He talked to me and my family like we were slow and incompetent. My cousin misheard the price and thought he had $15 not $50 so when he pulled out his wallet to pay with a a ten and a five the owner rudely said " FIF-TY. 5...0" And this was AFTER the fact he aggressively yanked open my aunt's driver side door as she was still sitting in there to yell at her to drive forward more. He wanted us to park so damn close to the tree line, which had a drop off cliff, that a gust of wind would knock the car into the ditch. He kept screaming at me to drive closer and closer towards the ditch. It was to the point that I couldn't see the ditch anymore because he also parker my aunts car so close to my car. This man needs to learn how to speak to people. He thinks that because he's basically the only place someone can park their car overnight there that he can talk however he wants. It was no exaggeration how rude he was to us. I should've recorded this interaction but I was just so stunned and flabbergasted that I forgot. Do better. read more

This guy is committing insurance fraud left and right. We needed our car towed, and Larry is the only tow truck driver apparantly for the 4x4 area. We got stuck, called him to come out. In the mean time a guy with a truck towed us out of the spot. Our engine had gotten wet, and we were going to see if it once it dried a few minutes, and we cleaned up the plugs, if it would start. Then that's when Larry arrived. He came out and told us even if we got our truck started, he would still charge us the $150. I said "150 dollars?". Then I told him to just tow it to the nearest dealer and we'd pay the $150. He said he wouldn't tow it to the dealer. I asked him how much it would be to go ahead and tow to the dealer. He flat out refused. He kept telling us "here's what you do, call the insurance company..." While we were talking to our neighbor who was helping us graciously move our stuff out of the truck and put it in our house, Larry took the key to our truck. (So we couldn't try to start it). Then he backed into the truck hitting it with his trailer. From there he put it up on the trailer. He kept telling us to call the insurance company as if it were his motto. He said it was being taken to his secure lot. We repeated back and forth that it was $150 for the tow and $30 a day for his lot. He kept saying that the $150 was because he had to drive his truck in the water. He did not. He knows that area well and he knows that he could have driven up one half mile marker and got there just fine. (that's the way he exited.) Of course he kept repeating "call your insurance". Then we called the insurance and they called him to have the vehicle released the very next day (about 12 hours later). Well, now his rate was $675 and $30 a day. I called to ask what the change was and he called me a liar, said it was $675 because he had to go in the water, and that he never told us it was $150. Then he said, he could charge that amount because that's what the insurance companies will allow him to charge. Later that day, the insurance company wanted to get it out of his lot. They hired another tow company to pick up the vehicle to take it to the dealership. Now that rate went up to over $800. Have no clue as to why. The insurance company wired him the money and we finally got it out of his hands. This guy is a straight up crook. read more

I called for information and the attendant was very rude and told me not to "tie up his line" (wrecker) and told me to call the other number (storage), which he also answered and still would not answer the question, which was simply what is the weekly rate to park a car? DO NOT USE A-1 TOWING! YOU WILL PAY A-1 RATES! Our SUV got stuck on the north beaches in Corolla, and the sheriff recommended A-1 Towing, supposedly the only towing outfit in town. What a racket! The owner, Larry, towed us a total of 10 miles to his 'secure' location, which was a locked, fenced-in area in the middle of an open field just off the beach access. He then demanded $635 in cash for towing us 10 miles and storing our SUV for a total of 27 hours before he would release our vehicle to us so that an authorized AAA tow truck could take our SUV to an actual service station. At the time we were stranded, he did not give us the option to have the SUV towed to a service station, although we were under the impression that he operated a service station where our vehicle was being transported. He has been called the 'pirate of the high sands' and he lived true to that moniker. Although known and recommended by many locals (including the sheriff), Larry robbed us blind while playing the 'nice guy'. Had we listened to Larry's recommendation, our car would have sat in his 'secure' location and our engine would have been ruined from water. Luckily, the service station we used was honest and was able to repair our SUV for less than Larry's towing bill. There are honest towing companies in OBX, just NOT A-1! read more

We got extremely lucky ! After driving like a crazy person on the beach because we were renting there for the first time, sand got into the fan of my Trailblazer. I thought we were screwed until the nice young man at Winks told us to call a-1 and then Larry arrived. He actually fixed the problem in a minute and charged $25. He also told us to take tire pressure down to 15 from 20 and that worked like a charm for the rest of the week. read more

Never in my life have I encountered someone so rude simply because he didn't give me directions to his business. A relative that was already familiar was meeting me and then I follow them to the lot. The same relative I would then be riding with to 4x4 property. He insisted on speaking to me himself. However, upon calling him, he refused to answer until the 10th call and then informed me he closed at 7pm and wouldn't allow me to pay him to park in his lot even though he was aware of my arrival time due to speaking to my relative earlier in the day. 1 star is not low enough for someone so rude, disrespectful, impatient and lacking knowledge of tack in working with the public in what is typically already a stressful situation for the customer. Ours wasn't a tow or recovery but simply a happy parking customer. Unfortunately, after the treatment, we of course were left more than confused at the bizarre treatment leading to frustration. read more

Absolutely, positively do NOT use A1 towing. We got stuck 40 feet from the entrance to the beach and this guy pulls over to us in his tow truck. He informs us that he will tow us for $160, and that we will be reimbursed by our insurance company. We inform him that we don't have that much and that we can cobble together $30 in cash to pay him for the short tow. He notices the GUEST placard on our dashboard and states aloud, "you're from the Currituck Club and you only have $30?" I didn't see the relevance and thought it to be strange and unprofessional to ask such a question. As I dug out the sand from beneath my car, I heard him talking to the quad-driving police officer and laughing. I decided at that moment to steel myself with the resolve to do this on my own, or at the very least, call AAA. We patiently dug all the sand from below the undercarriage, then had our children and heart patients exit the car, for a try. We made it. In the euphoria, two members of our party unleashed a string of profanities to the A1 tow truck operator. This drew the ire of police officer, who (keeping in mind our N.J. License plates) said, "We don't do that on this beach." Well, I tell you what we do in New Jersey. We stop and assist folks who are in trouble. So much for southern hospitality. (No fewer than 20 AWD vehicles drove right past us as we struggled to extricate our vehicle) We were warned by the police that we were engaging in disorderly conduct. I say, the A1 tow operator deserved every word, and we cursed him out in honour of all the folks who were taken advantage of by this company. We quickly left...never to return. read more

NEVER CALL LARRY AT A-1 TOWING, OR YOU WILL BE WALLET RAPED! A-1 is a straight up fraud. Long story short Larry responded to my call and after changing his pricing 5 times, demanded my id and credit card because I did not have 650 on me for a tow to the road, and if i refused he was towing my car to his lot which is god knows where. He told me he would hold my id and card as collateral, and that I owe him 650, though he only moved my car 15 feet, off of the main sand drive so other cars would not hit me (we were still 3 miles from the main road). Well he left, and I called another towing company, who graciously wrapped the tow charge into the final bill (blown alternator), and they towed it to their garage when Larry only wanted to tow to the 4x4 exit, where I would then call AAA. I then canceled my credit card, and got a new id, never heard from Larry again or paid him a dime, why pay a crook when they just want to rob you for more. I never gave him permission to charge it, so if he does that it theft, and having my id ad credit card? Easy case for identity theft. Also, after I gave him those cards and contacted authorities, they asked if I wanted to complain about Larry, because he was their friend. In short, Larry is fat good ol' boy who cruises the beach looking for his next victim. The local beach patrol will not help your cause.... If you get stuck, call ABC towing, they have a garage for repairs, and are the nicest people you will ever deal with. Their tow fee was $250, but if you read other horror stories about Larry he says you will only pay $250, and then he charges you $600+ once your car is on his truck bed... Also, my sister-in-law (who was with us on the vacation) just informed me the pastor of their church just made the same mistake of contacting Larry for a tow, and were charged $175 for Larry to get them unstuck, which im sure was a 5 ft. tow.... Larry lives on the beach, mile marker 18, which means he only has a maximum of five miles to go if you get stuck....my company pays me $0.40/ mile when I travel by car....Larry is making a good $30/ mile....If he wasn't such a doucher I would ask for a job, he has to be a millionaire! ****He was also drunk when he arrived, and mentioned he carried a gun with him (it was dark out so I do not blame him), but that is a deadly combination, and the local beach patrol just thought it was funny**** read more
