This is a terrible company to deal with. They sent my Mother's cremains and the 2 metal urns were terribly scratched up. Instead of simply offering some sort of reimbursement, Luke basically said it was MY fault and not their crappy wrapping of my loved ones remains. He expected me to mail them all the way back to Connecticut from California. This guy Luke is a real piece of work. He lied and told me the probate judge signed off on having my son buried. He passed on 8/20/20! No one notified us. Then he tells me it's going to be $3500 to get my son back. This little punk had the balls to ask me if I was such a good mom why was my son missing for so long. Unreal. No clue about addiction and what it does to families. I talked to probate and they stated that they just release custody they don't specify what the funeral home director does with the remains. A bit disappointed with them. After initially contacting them they quoted me a price and I agreed with it. After they had picked up my brothers body for cremation I was asked what I would want for a container. I chose a plain 8x8 box about the size of a box that a birthday cake comes in. I was then informed that the box was $195. Since there was nothing I could do since they had already cremated my brother, I paid the $195. I would not use them again. They should have been up front about total costs before they picked up his remains. Through a internet search after the fact, I found that they have been doing this for years. read more

After reading all these negative reviews and experiences that others have encountered with Abbey Cremation Services owner Luke DeMaria, I can honestly say that I am not surprised by them at all. Luke is the most condescending, rude, verbally aggressive and totally unprofessional person in the "End-of-Life" services business that I have ever encountered. The saying is "You Get What You Pay For" is so very true in doing business with Abbey Cremation Services. If possible put your financial burden and family dynamics into a business that will have the utmost compassion, understanding and be supportive of your family situation. Buyer Beware! Cheap is Cheap for their services in all aspects of doing business with this company. Protect your rights. They made me feel like I did something wrong because I called the state of Connecticut and reported them so the fraud department took over. The owner was such an insensitive jerk. The way he talks to people who just lost a child is unreal. I hope the state roasts them. read more

Stay Away! This place is a disgrace. My sister passed away in May of 2022. Abbey is set up with the state of Connecticut. They knew that this was to be paid by the state. For 15 months I begged and pleaded with them to release my sister. Especially as we approached her one year anniversary. They were cold and unhelpful. They wouldn't even help me with contact numbers to reach department of the state that they work with in these cases. Constantly telling me " I could pay if I wanted her". Why? So they could be paid twice? They deal with the state, they know they get paid! Holding my sisters remains hostage was despicable. They added to the pain and heartache of the loss of my sister. Abbey was very efficient and thorough and professional in the handling of my late spouse's cremation as well as locating a plot, ordering a headstone and even formatting a portion of his ashes into an artistic work which will be placed on my desk, so that my spouse will always be by my side. When I had questions, which, I admit, were numerous and often, the staff had prompt answers. Whenever I felt unsure about a certain decision I was about to make, the details were explained to me, allowing me to make the best decision for myself and my spouse. Everything that should be provided by a first-rate service was provided. Abbey Cremation Service was recommended by the caring folks at Middlesex Hospital Hospice Care, and I thank them for it. I was able to arrange for many of the details ahead of time, which does help tremendously in securing the arrangements that best suit your needs. To all those who posted a one star review...the whole process is so much smoother if you plan in advance! We had Abbey Cremation for both my Mom and Dad when they died. The staff was very helpful, the paperwork is simple, and they treated each with respect when they came to the house. They both died at home, it only required a phone call for the staff to come and pick them up. When my Mom died, one of my brothers had to travel from Boston to say goodbye. The staff arrived in about an hour, and they were kind enough to wait until he arrived. I already have my cremation paid for through Abbey Cremation and I appreciate that they offer those of us who don't need the hoopla a simple, straightforward process. Since my parents died, we as a family have scattered their ashes all over the world. Be brave, be bold, and save your family what all of these people had to go through and make your own arrangements well in advance! read more

I want to share my experience so other people can be more prepared for the process when a loved one passes away. When you choose Abbeys cremation they are the least expensive. But by choosing the least expensive, I was not aware it meant that you were also getting less assistance. Luke said we don't hold your hand at this inexpensive rate. You want that experience you pay $4000 plus more for that experience. I think thats important for others to know that. Loosing a loved one is not easy, your mind is clouded, your thoughts are scattered and you really need someone to walk you through the process and explain the next steps. My mother died and we were lucky enough to have medicaid pay for ther cremations. Make sure you followup with medicaid to see if payment is processed. We had to and informed Abbeys it was paid so we could book the date for the funeral. If you utilize their funeral director services know that they will complete the death certificate, call the Cemetery to schedule the funeral(you need to tell them to do this) and drive your loved one to the Cemetery but that is pretty much it... We had to follow-up to see how to pay the Cemetery, to make sure it was booked and to find out if paperwork was needed to be signed(we called numerous times for this). If its raining a Cemetery will put up a popup but your funeral director must request it so call them and make sure they think to do this(we didnt know the funeral director needed to do this so we stood in the rain). If you want prayers they will do it but they wont follow-up to ask you the religion and to discuss what prayers are wanted. So I requested this service and was expecting it and when the funeral happened there was nothing said for my mother. I unfortunately didn't know all of this and so many things were not done. We stood in the rain, prayers were not done over my mothers ashes and I left the Cemetery feeling like my mothers final resting moments were haphazardly done. Do your research so you feel right about how you lay them in their final resting place. Don't walk into this not knowing all of this. I hope my review will help someone else in the future. Luke has offered to go back out the next time we are in town to say some prayers for my mother but unfortunately you can't get a redoe with this. Rest in peace mom. We had discussed with her what she wanted and we explained it to the staff. They provided everything we needed at a very reasonable cost. Of course we laughed, because we thought we had so much more time. I was stunned when I lost him and Tianna was caring and kind and helped me get through the process as painlessly as possible. Years ago my elderly father told me he would prefer to be cremated and wanted no wake or funeral, just a simple graveside send off with a few close friends and family. Years passed and I hadn't given it a thought until my dad came to live with us. After a little research, I contacted Abbey and spoke with the owner. He explained the details and said to call him anytime of the day or night if my father died. I put his number in my phone figuring some day I'd need it. It was ten years later that my 92 year old dad passed after a brief hospital stay. I dug out the number and put the wheels in motion. A few days later I met Luke at the facility to sign the paperwork. The place was tasteful and could easily accommodate wakes/services if necessary. I was shown urns of all price ranges with absolutely no pressure. There's even a no cost option of a box if you have other plans. A few days later I picked up my father's cremated remains. There were no surprises, no extra fees, no nonsense. I appreciate that and knowing my dad, (who was a man of means) he hated wasting money was probably pleased, too. Seeing how easy and pleasant this went, I can highly recommend Abbey Cremation. My positive experience makes me re-think the whole idea of a standard $15,000 funeral. My parents learned of Abbey from a friend of the family. Since it was their wish to use abbey cremation service I went along with it (after checking the ridiculous prices of cremation closer to home). I couldn't be happier with our choice. We prepaid and any question I had filling out the paperwork they answered immediately. Very easy process. When dad died at home they guided us through the entire process, working with the dr down in Trumbull to get the death certificate completed so we could have the church service on the day we wanted. All we had to do was drive to rocky hill, pick out the urn (they have a great, affordable selection), and take the ashes. When my mom died 2 months later, it was just as easy. I would recommend Abbey to anyone who is looking for a great group of people to help them through this difficult time. My father past away unexpectedly, did not have any funeral arrangements in place and my parents were also in the midst of a financial crisis. So I had to figure out a way to handle his cremation arrangement and come up with the money to paid for it. The hospital provided a list with a funeral homes in the area and after making a couple of phone calls I was easily looking at $2500 to $3,000 just to get my father cremated at a normal funeral home. After speaking with the hospital again asking what my options were for when my family did not have any money to pay for the funeral arrangements they suggested they Abbey Funeral & Cremation Services. After speaking with them, they quoted me the best price at $995 for a direct cremation. I thought this was a good deal and felt good at the time. I gave them permission to start the process and felt somewhat relieved. But then I should of realized you get what you pay for. I had to keep calling them to get a status on when I could pick up of my father ashes and obtaining a copy of the death certificate once I picked up the ashes. They kept telling me that the price of the death certificate copies were not included, which I expected. But they failed to tell me that I had to the office of vital records in the town that my father died to get the copies once I picked up my dad's ashes. It made it sound like they could provide a copy at the time when I came to get the ashes. This made me very angry because I have to go to another place on top of all the other things that go along with a death in the family. Even the hospital told me that I can obtain copies through the funeral home. I also told them that I wanted their cheapest urn ($45) to at least have something for my father's ashes instead of the standard cardboard box that is included in the price. Once I got to there to pick up the ashes, they had failed to provide this request for me. Also, pay close attention to the Container section of the general price list. Basically, it says that the $995 price does not include the price for the cremation container for the body. They will provide one for $195 if you do not provide it. This also took me by surprise when I went to pick up my father's ashes. Also, my mother and I got this feeling that they were rushing us out the door and just wanted out money. I felt very disrespected after the whole process was completed. I am also very angry that I have to go to another place to get the death certificate when I thought I could get it at the funeral home. Basically the lesson here is to have your funeral arrangements in place so you do now have to go through this experience that I had to deal with. I selected Abbey cremation because of a billboard advertisement and also because of the reasonable price. My experience was not a good one. When my ex husband and best friend passed I contacted Abbey to employ their services. When filling out the necessary paperwork, I called to speak with Luke for help to make sure I was correctly filling out the papers. He asked me how I was related to the deceased and I did tell him that I was his ex wife. At that time he did not say that according to the State of Ct I was not authorized to be in charge of this. Instead, he continued to help me fill out the papers over the phone and all was well. About a week later I got a call from the secretary at Abbey stating that due to CT regulations, I was not authorized. Well this created a huge inconvenience and family upset. I had to search and look up his only living relative, a daughter whom he has not seen in 45 years. This was not easy as she does not live locally. As it turned out, I was able to contact her to carry out this chore and all is well. I am angry because I was lied to by Luke. He should have told me right from the start when I initially called that I could not handle this myself. Also I should have been told that I needed her permission to pick up the cremains. Abbey was just not up front with me. They made a difficult time much more difficult. As a result it took about a month before his body was even cremated and the death certificate was delayed. I couldn't even disconnect his telephone because of the delayed death certificate and had to wind up paying a telephone bill for a dead person. My father passed away unexpectedly at Waterbury Hospital on Sept 15,2017. I called a few places and Abbey's was priced ok. I called and spoke with Luke and he said that he would meet with me to talk over everything that needs to be done. I told him that I never had to do this before so I was not sure of everything. Well I get there and Luke was not there and was not going to be the one helping me with the planning for my dad like he said he would. I did not like the fact I was lied to right from the start. The lady that helped us puts us into a room to fill out papers, and then she brings us into this room that has boxes and urns to pick from, I was shocked that they could charge someone $795.00 for cremation a wooden box, then $195.00 for a cardboard box or the sickest thing I ever heard you can rent a cremation casket after someone else has been in it. I told the lady that we did not have much money for anything because we didn't think my dad was going to pass this soon. All I was told was they would not charge us the $195.00 for the box. I had been looking at all the urns and said how I really liked a few of them. Did not even offer a small keepsake urn. The cremation had already been done on Monday and they did not bother to call me until 4 days later. The biggest part of it all was when I went to pick my dads ashes up, the lady comes into the room with a white box and throws/pushed my dads ashes on the table to me and then says where is the money you owe us. I could not believe what I heard her say. They gave me my father in a plain white box and his ashes were a plastic bag. I'm not rich or have a lot of money and I feel that's why I was treated so badly and that shameful. I will not recommend Abbey Cremation to anyone after the way I was treated. I would strongly recommend Abbey Cremation I was referred to them through Hospice of NE CT after contacting other local funeral homes which quoted me 3,500 and up to cremate my mother who was in a nursing home .I did not have a life insurance policy on her, nor did I have a lot of money . When Hospice told me about Abbey I called them Luke was very professional and kind he told me what he would charge and why he charges what he charges to help families who do not have a lot of money . The day my mother passed I called them they were so nice on the phone and they came and picked her up as promptly as possible. When they arrived the gentleman that came was so professional , nice and accommodating . He treated my mother with dignity and respect even though she was deceased . when me and my sister went a couple of days later they were again so nice and very helpful with filling out the paperwork . I was in RI making phone calls while my husband was in CT taking care of what needed to be taken care of there. Had the need of a crematory for my elderly brother's wife. My brother asked me to handle it for him as he himself is not well. I called Abbey Crematory and spoke with Luke, who was very helpful, caring and compassionate. He advised us of how direct cremation worked and the cost. We decided to go with Abbey Cremation since he was so accomadating. The price was quoted was reasonable. I explained to him that we would need to get the life insurance processed before payment, he informed me he would help us with that if we needed him having him as an assignment of payment and my brother getting the balance. My sister in law was cremated, when I called to see if the ashes were ready that's where the demeanor of Luke changed. He would not release the ashes until payment was received and that is not what we were told on our first phone call. I reminded him of that first phone call and what he told us about payment he began to get rude stating that we should not expect him to wait 3 weeks for his money. I told him my brother did not have the money he didn't seem to care and asked me if I had the money. So angry I went and picked up the ashes and paid for them not believing how I was duped by him. The charge was not as advertised due to other costs, that we were not informed about. After I told him how I thought we were treated he did apologize and waived one of the charges. So beware when you see a price ask about all the costs for cremation. In closing I would not recommend Abbey Crematory.
