One of the oldest buildings in town, in the National Register, dating back almost 300 years. Then the facilities. From an outdoor garden for peace and quiet and reading and contemplation, to a beautiful reading room, to a community meeting space frequently used by many organizations. Tracy Library also has an enviable music selection, inter library ability, a large children's section, and a huge reference library. The staff is highly trained, a new director whose aim is to enhance the library's role in the community, and an elected Board of Directors who are residents and neighbors. Truly a magnificent place.

The site where New London NH stands today was one of the original Royal Grants that King George II…read moregranted to settlers from Portsmouth and the area was initially called Heidelberg in honor of the monarch's Prussian possessions. However, in 1779, settlers banned together, incorporating several more large parcels and changed the name to New London to honor the British capital city. Throughout the years, the town has been preserved as a gem in New England through the altruism and generosity of many of the founding families as well as a concerted effort of many of its residents. The New London Historical Society was founded in 1954, during the 175th anniversary of the town. In the following two decades, several landowners donated adjoining tracts of land to eventually build the compound that is now an integral part of the society. There are sixteen buildings now in the compound, most of them dating to the initial decades of the founding of the United States and which have been meticulously moved to the historical compound, forming its own historical village. The society has also built a transportation museum with a collection of transport vehicles from early days, including a Concord Coach used extensively in the New England routes. The dedication of the staff and patrons of the Historical Society allowed it to be named by the State of New Hampshire as one of the ten societies forming a state-wide history network. Best time to come is in late Fall, as the New England foliage season lends an additional dose of natural beauty to this jewel of a facility. This is a brand new facility in the meadows adjacent to Newport NH downtown. The facility is…read moreamazing, and it has taken many years and much effort to bring this wonderful addition to the community of Newport. Entering the building still with the aroma of fresh concrete and paint, one becomes aware of just how large it is. It has a large gymnasium, a family fitness room, an events room, a rec room, several meeting rooms, a concession area, and office space. For events, there is plenty of parking outside. We came here for a nonprofit organization meeting and I was impressed with the place. The organization will be using one of the large rooms to stage a "penny sale" to benefit the community, in the near future and they have all the space they need. With the eclipse of the woolen mills some time ago, Newport fell in hard times. It is slowly reawakening with a relatively recent health facility better shopping areas, etc. And this is par for the course. Hope it fills the needs of the community well.

And moreover, the cultural life of a community is greatly influenced by the availability of books, whether it be bookstores, libraries, or higher learning institutions. With a wonderful public library, and a wonderful college in town, New London also features Morgan Hill Bookstore as one of its cultural anchors. It is refreshing to enter the store. The store changed ownership to a wonderful couple in May and the new owners have been doing their best in reorganizing and putting their own signature on the place. Service is absolutely flawless. And variety is plentiful. From best sellers to sci-fi to cooking and As hard as it is to maintain a bookstore in the cyber age, three owners are doing it write well, with sales - they just recently had a sidewalk sale, providing for added value to the customer. One wonderful business in a great town.

You meet your neighbors at the Post Office. You make decisions at the Post Office. You see your contractors at the Post Office. And in New London, you pick up the latest copy of the Kearsarge Shopper, the ultimate must-know, should-know, wanna-know, TMI, and why-do-I-know publication in the area. The Post Office provides a huge service in the town of New London. Located a few steps from the local grocery store, it makes a one-trip shopping, errands and mail stop a reality. In addition, a large part of the town's population rents PO Boxes due to the Winter practice on the part of the state snowplows to invariably take down mail poles with the boxes next to each address. Staffed by really nice people who realize they're making a contribution to the well being of the town and the vitality of the community.

I know there are a lot of students and retirees in New London, but certainly some people have jobs with hours that unfortunately mean your day doesn't end in time for you to get to the post office on time. Pretty please Post Office, consider staying open until 6pm. Or at least 5:30pm?
