Second Harvest depends on volunteers to help with deliveries, sorting food, and running events. I volunteered at Second Harvest for the first time this week in both helping with deliveries and sorting food in the warehouse. Working on the truck was great because you can see firsthand the people who are benefiting from the service. It feels good to do something tangible to help people in need. The warehouse is a much more solitary activity, but there is a lot of work to be done to portion donated food, so it was great to lend a hand. The annual Turkey Drive is coming on Dec 6-7 and Dec 13-14, 2008. You can volunteer or help by buying a frozen turkey at participating Loblaws locations where volunteers will collect and deliver them to people in need.

When we arrived the first day we sat on a bench and waited for instructions or information. When it became clear that we seem to be overlooked I stood up and tried to get the attention of one of the staff. No one would acknowledge me. By this time my son started to cry in disappointment, so we left the gym and I went to the info table where we stood, with my son crying, for another 10 minutes ignored without acknowledgement. we left. I was refunded for my enrollment fee which I appreciate. But that does nothing in the way of repairing my son's broken confidence and disappointment.
