Let me be the first to say that I didn't really believe much in acupuncture or cupping therapy. I was training for a marathon and decided to do a long run the night before I came to Arizona on a business trip. This was definitely a bad idea since I had to sit on a plane for hours on a business trip to AZ. By the time I had arrived, I was already in pain with a pulled muscle in my back. I couldn't find a massage therapist nearby so I decided to give this place a try. I met with someone named Paul who walked me through cupping. I told him that I had never had it done but I would be willing to try anything to get rid of this pain. I can only describe the experience in one word....awesome! I've had deep tissue massages which help but border on painful. This was still intense, but the results came pretty quickly. Wow!!!!! I am so impressed with Paul and the cupping service I received. I honestly didn't know what to expect, but I am so pleased with it I will sure to be back soon for acupuncture and cupping! If you are looking for a world-class acupuncture service this is the place to be. You don't just come in and get acupuncture and leave and that's the end of it. Paul will sit down with you and ask you about your background to see what is happening in your life. I came in and I had a allergy problem in which my sinuses were filled and was causing head pain. Paul identified that I had been eating a lot of highly inflammatory foods and that my body was not in good shape. He recommend a juicing routine as well as switching my diet to one that is not so high in gluten and dairy products. He also spoke to me about the practice of mindfulness and meditation. My sinus issues completely went away. I started drinking the juice every morning and also limited my diet to less foods that have gluten and dairy products. I also started practicing mindfulness. I became a very happy and healthy person. I have been coming to see Paul almost weekly for the last six months. It is a great opportunity to chat about what is happening in my life and he gives you a lot of positive spiritual direction. Paul is a very spiritually wise person who puts a great perspective on life. The treatments that I usually get are the acupuncture and the cupping. At first the cupping is really painful especially if you do the running cupping. But as you loosen up over time kind of like a piece of meat gets tenderized. It becomes very enjoyable the more often you do it. The acupuncture is amazing too. Paul then dim the lights and put on some relaxing meditation music or perhaps a guided meditation that you can enjoy while receiving the acupuncture. I have had chronic right hip pain that has gotten increasingly worse over the last couple of years. It's gotten so that it keeps me from sleeping comfortably at night. I'm a firm believer in alternative medicine and have had chiropractic treatments throughout my life. I've also had structural integration work and deep massages. I've been going to Paul at Above & Beyond Acupuncture every Saturday for the past 2 months. Prior to going to Above & Beyond, I had been to numerous doctors to see why I was having stomach issues and to see what they could do to help with it as well as some anxiety and stress related issues. I was a little hesitant with acupuncture, as this was my first time trying it. The experience has exceeded any preconceived expectation I had of what it would be and feel like. While the doctors I saw looked to stop the symptoms, Paul has worked with me to actually cure the underlying issues. I will say I have a holistic bias so I was much more open to the idea of using acupuncture as an alternative than some others might be. Along with the acupuncture, we have also done cupping. I highly recommend if it meets your specific needs and goals (don't be scared of the bruises). What to expect: The first consultation you will go over what issues you have be having and dive into what they may stem from. Paul will listen and give feedback when necessary. After going over these, you're on the acupuncture table. He will choose the points that are suited for your specific needs. The needles are very thin and you barely feel them. On a pain scale of 1-10, I would give them a 0.25 when being inserted and a 0 when you have them in. Once they are in, Paul will shut the lights off and leave the room to allow you to relax. The first time I will admit that it felt a little weird laying there but when it's all over, you feel light, uplifted, and nostalgic. After the first session, you are more relaxed about the process and can go into deeper meditative states. At least that's what I use the silence and time away from the world for. Each week, Paul will discuss your progress and get an idea of how you feel, what's working, what's not, and where to focus on. Today I had my 3rd appointment with Paul and thought I should share my experience. I'll begin by saying I've been to acupuncturists in the past, 3 exactly, over the course of 15 years. Until this past month I hadn't been to one since 2008. Soooo, I've been suffering from a great deal of back pain for a long time and recently decided I've had enough and need to feel better. I began seeing a chiropractor once a week and decided to supplement that with acupuncture (my chiropractor is a HUGE fan too). Anyway, what a tremendous improvement. WOW. I'm rarely impressed, and I'm happy to say, I AM VERY IMPRESSED. To start, Paul will consult with you to assess the problem/s. He is a great listener and so easy to open up to and be honest with, there is no judgement in that room. He will then begin the treatment, which for me has been acupuncture followed by cupping for the back pain. He also provided an herbal treatment that I drink 3 times a day and it actually tastes good! Along with that he has given some nutrition advice and reading recommendations. I truly feel as though he is treating my whole person and not just masking a problem with a temporary solution. I plan to keep him as my acupuncturist for as long as I live in the same state. And if I move, I'll schedule appointments when I come back for a visit! I am not a believer of magical potions or fairy dust or flying carpets... Acupuncture and chiropractors were on that same list for me until last week! My mother (48)who suffers from a L4-L5 herniation had an episode of sciatica accompanied by acute muscle spasms. The combination rendered her completely immobile. Prescriptive medication (flexerill, toridol, prednisone) did nothing. After exhausting every possible option, I remembered that there was a new acupuncturist by where I work. If you are truly ready to begin a healing journey, whether it is due to emotional or physical pain (or both!), I highly recommend Paul to help you find your way. This experience has been SO much more than just acupuncture. Paul will provide you with many tools to use to heal outside of the clinic. I wasn't really prepared for all of the extra help, but I can't express how grateful I have felt to have all of these extra methods of self-healing. I have been exposed to so many other types of healing as well through his podcast called 'Are You Being Present?' (which is great, seriously, go listen), which has piqued my interest in pursuing multiple healing therapies that I believe can work synergistically to provide even deeper healing when combined. Paul spoke to me for a decent amount of time at the beginning of each session to peer into my life and try to pinpoint where my pain was really coming from. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and have had chronic neck and shoulder pain for over ten years. I have also had depression and anxiety since I was 14 (age 27 now). After all of the treatments and medications I have tried, I never thought that maybe I was holding onto a lot of negativity and pain from the past in various parts of my body (which can manifest as inflammation). So by telling Paul in detail what is going on in my life, he will customize the acupuncture to fit my current needs. I have experienced improvement with digestion, shoulder and neck pain, my headaches and migraines have reduced drastically, and my depression and anxiety are starting to melt away. I think this is both due to the acupuncture and also incorporating tools such as meditation into my life (which has been such a blessing that I now meditate for 20 minutes twice a day). He also provides cupping therapy which I am interested in trying when my body's inflammation starts to subside a little more. I was in a place in life where I needed to start making changes or everything I was feeling would eventually swallow me whole. Paul has really challenged me to be very honest with myself. Before I met him I didn't even realize how badly my anxiety was affecting my mindset, my energy, my attitude, and even other people.
