Best food in Indy. The vegetarian combo never disappoints. They've been putting out amazing food for years!

We were a group of 6 and came on a Saturday night and there was only two other tables occupied. There is plenty of seating. I was happy to see that the menu had some pictures and that there were descriptions of each food item, also our server was a great help in assisting us with what to order. However, it did take a long time for our food to come out. I got the Yesega Sambuusa (pastry stuff with beef) which I really liked and the Tibs Lamb. Each dish we ordered also came with two sides, I got the Tikel Gomen (cabbage and carrots) and Yemisir Keyi Wett (red lentil). Everything was so good, I only wish the portions were larger and it was a bit pricey. This is my second time experiencing Ethiopian cuisine, my first time was in Kansas and it was ok but I am glad I came here and tried again. read more

Wow! Very glad I tried this place. My husband and I shared the Taste of Abyssinia and we were not disappointed. From the lentils to the meats, all the food was flavorful and delicious. What a great evening we had here. My wife and I popped in around 7pm on a Saturday and the place wasn't busy at all (which is such a shame for how good the food was). We were quickly Sat and greeted. Our drinks and food came out quickly. The place felt clean, and wasnt loud at all. My wife and I shared the taste of Abyssia option one, which included chicken, lamb, beef, house salad, carrots/cabage, and red and yellow lentils. The meats were tender, and all had a unique flavor. The carrots and cabbage were crunchy. The house salad had a delicious homemade dressing that made the salad taste fresh. The lentils were well cooked and were a nice addition to the meal. The Injera was spongy, and was fun to eat with our hands. We appreciate the hand sanitizer on the table to clean our hands before we ate. If you are ever on the NW side of Indy and are looking for a place that isn't typical American/mexican/italian food, this is the place I would recommend. read more

Wow, it's been several years since I last visited Abbysinia. We took our kiddos over the weekend to experience an Ethiopian meal firsthand. We frequently order Ethiopian carry-out, but I wanted them to see how vibrantly the food is presented and interactive the whole experience is. We ordered a cabbage, spinach and potato hand pie along with the ground beef version. I thought the vegetarian one was much more flavorful and interesting. We also ordered the vegan platter for two and really enjoyed each of the flavors. The service was OK, but we struggled with the language barrier to learn more about new dishes to try and discuss allergies. Are typical go-to is Axum Ethiopian. We order carryout just about once a month- I can't get enough of it. Abbysinia has the full set up for Ethiopian coffee ceremonies and plentiful seating. The vibe is a little interesting with a big screen TV and neon lights front and center. Overall, a positive experience. Set aside some time to work your way through this strip mall. Excellent!! Service was fast and the food was hot and very flavorful. We will definitely be back. Haven't been in awhile and we are so happy to see the family is still doing well. This is just what I was looking for in Ethiopian food in Indy. I love they use real teff flour and the entire menu is GF. We did two large samplers and everything was fresh, fragrant and delicious. The lady who served us the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony was friendly and gracious and helped us understand what all goes into it. RICH, very dark, perfectly seasoned coffee. I really enjoyed the space. Open, very clean, plenty of room which was appreciated. I have been to Ethiopian places all over North America and sometimes they are crowded and small, this place has plenty of room for all and still is cozy. Beautiful and delicious evening. Finally got a chance to get into Abyssinia and try some Ethiopian food. It did not disappoint. I've been wanting to try it and the time was right. I went with a friend. The inside was homey and they invited to sit where we would like. They brought menus and let us mull over them for a bit. Water arrived promptly and we both ordered a glass of honey wine! First drink was potent but delicious. My friend ordered the Yedoro Tibs. This was tender chicken sautéed with rosemary, onions, and peppers with mild or hot berbere sauce. I decided on the combination plate TA #2 so I could try all the things. It was served in njera and had the following items: Yebeg Alchea(tender lamb prepared in niter Kibeh spiced with onions, garlic, ginger root, and curry) Sega Wett(lean beef cooked in berbere sauces seasoned with Abyssinia spices) Dora Wett(chicken breast marinated in lemon, sautéed in niter kibbeh, stewed in berbere sauce with onion , ginger root, garlic, served with a hard boiled egg) Misir wett(red split lentil cooked in berbere sauce and fine herb) spinach yellow beans(garbanzo split beans flavored with curry and herbs) carrots and green beans House salad My favorites was the carrots and greens beans followed closely by the Yebeg Alchea(lamb). It had a nice spice. Hot but not too hot. I ordered mild. I couldn't have handled the hot! Food came out very fast and they included a separate dish of njera for eating our meals. This is the sour fermented flat pancake like bread that is spongy. In Ethiopian culture you use the bread instead of utensils. A friend made reservations for Thanksgiving, also her birthday. We were set for a 3pm arrival. I see my friends in the parking lot. We're all dressed up. We go to the door. It's closed, as in no-lights-on. We're floored. She loves this place. It would be my partner's and my first foray into Ethiopian food. But we'll never know. There was no sign on the door, nothing. You can go, and maybe you'll get food, and maybe it'll be good-- but we can't tell you because we went down the street and ate Mexican food. It was a good meal. It wasn't Ethiopian. Parking is amazing as this is nestled in a strip center. Upon walking in the door I immediately smelled the spices & viewed all of the cultural art and paintings they have on display. It was just myself and my friend in the whole establishment (minus the wait & kitchen staff) they were quite friendly as well as knowledgeable of the menu. Both my company and myself are familiar with Ethiopian cuisine so we knew generally what we had a taste for & were open to trying a few new items, which the combo plate options are perfect for this! This restaurant was very affordable & the taste was impeccable. The only thing I'd share negative about them was that it wasn't all hot! I love for my food to be piping hot when it first comes out & that just wasn't the case with the lentils (still full of flavor) Outside of this, I'll be returning more people need to know about this place. I've been here a couple of times and each time the food has been pretty good! It's very flavorful. You peel the bread off or use the side of bread they have to scoop the food with. It's a great experience if you're looking to try something new and possibly out of your comfort zone of eating with spoon or fork. They also have a very good honey wine. As always, we were completely satisfied with our experience at Abyssinia. Our waiter was friendly, helpful, and attentive. The owner Abraham walked around a bit and gave us a warm smile and we were able to share how much we were enjoying our meal. The spice level was fantastic. The lamb and beef dishes were filled with tender chunks of meat and were on the hotter side, with lovely complex spices. The lentils (my favorite), greens, cabbage, and potatoes were pleasantly spiced and mild. This made for a nice balance to get a punch of flavor and then cool it down a little. Oh, and we also ordered the cottage cheese, which gave us another nice cooling option. The injera was (in my opinion) sour, floppy, and clammy, which is exactly how we love it!! This was my 2nd visit to Abyssinia and it was just as good as the 1st. Abyssinia is a family owned,legit Ethiopian restaurant in a strip mall on 38th St. It's small and casual and staff are very helpful explaining the menu. I had the vegetarian combo which is samples of several dishes such as potato's, collard greens, and lentils all on plate sized injera bread. I enjoyed all the different flavors and there is so much of it you can get about 3 meals. It was so good I forgot to take pics I just ate. It's also fun to eat with your hands. By far my mostest favorite Ethiopian restaurant ever. A very good friend suggested this place long ago when we worked downtown Indy together. The service here is marvelous. The owners are outstanding folks. They are humble & very kind. You'll taste the love & passion in their cuisines. I've eaten in & carried out many many many times over, throughout the years. Not once have I ever been disappointed. Planning on going again & more often, once the interstate folks get their groove on. TBH, I can hardly wait. If you've never tried Ethiopian, what on God's green earth are you waiting on ;)? Brace yourself tho, IMO this type of deliciousness is meant to be shared with your party & lovingly enjoyed. You won't have the typical flatware in the event you opt to be seated in the traditional setting. Yes, that took a second to wrap myself around. What do you mean, we don't get forks...was what I asked. Goofy, I know this now. The Injera is so fresh & absorbs the fabulous dishes with each side that accompanies your choices. I've even ordered a to go meal for the next day funtivies a few times actually. It keeps well. Just describing this on Yelp now forces me to seek other routes excluding the interstate :) ! Authentic Ethiopian food in a casual set up. 3 words to describe my experience. The speciality here is Injera which is a fermented crepe made out of Teff Flour. Teff flour is similar to quinoa flour - made of seeds. It is extremely healthy and filling with just 1 crepe. The Yemisir Sambusa (deep fried conical pastry with lentils) was just the right spice and warmth to get us going. The abyssinia veg combo comes with 7 veg sides of curry on top. The fun part is sharing the meal with family and friends from the same plate. The sharing talks about understanding and signifies cultural anthropology in different regions. Comfortable spice level and good healthy veg choices. Highly recommend for a good diverse experience and getting to know new cultures. read more

We have been going here for years and the food is amazing. We love the sampler platter as it never disappoints. The injera is fresh. They go above and beyond to make fresh gluten free injera (we call ahead for this) when dining with our gluten free granny. I've had this place bookmarked for a while so when I had a friend who also loves Ethiopian food come to visit I knew we had to go. We got the vegetarian platter for 2 and it was more than enough for both of us. I also got the veggie sambuusa and I scarfed them down so fast I couldn't take a pic. Also make sure you try the honey wine it was delicious. We went around 530p on a Friday and were they only people there for a bit before the groups started coming in. Only downside was that we really didn't get checked on during our meal we had to flag or waitress for for more injera and it also took about 30 mins for us to get our check. DISCLAIMER: I'm probably spoiled coming from the DC area, where Ethiopian cuisine abounds. I came to Abyssinia on a weeknight, and the place was mostly empty, as expected. Service was fast and friendly. The food was fine. I tried a meat and veggie combo that had chicken, beef, and lamb. The spicy beef was the clear star of the show. I didn't really want more than one or two bites of the chicken, because it was a bit tough and not nearly as flavorful. The lamb tasted like it might have gone bad, so I didn't eat much of that either. My dining companion did eat quite a bit of the lamb and literally vomited later in the day. The veggies were fine. The more flavorful of the lentils had a fishy taste I wasn't a huge fan of, but they weren't bad. The other was bland. On the plus side, their enjera was great. I would consider trying this place again, but sticking with vegetarian options or beef. read more

Amazing! I am new to Ethiopian food. I had it once a decade ago and didn't like it. Visited this restaurant last summer once and was astounded. Went again recently this summer, and still amazing. Got the meat variety plate and the vegetarian variety plate, and we loved everything! Masks are required there unless dining, but I prefer to be safe and do take out. My wife and I have come here four times so far. It's about 90 minutes from our house in IL but we make sure to stop here every time we are near Indianapolis. While you can find most cuisines in most places, good Ethiopian can be difficult to come by. (I can't imagine why more people don't eat Ethiopian because it is freaking delicious.) And Abyssinia does not disappoint. I cannot comment on any non-vegetarian dishes, but we typically get the vegetarian platter. Gommen and Shiro are very good, but my favorite is still the Yemisir Wot. We also liked their vegetarian soup. I am not a good judge of whether this place is "authentic", but the food is excellent and most of the other patrons were Ethiopian when we were there. The injera - which my girls call "holey bread" (get it?) - was tasty. The lamb and beef dishes we ordered were delicious and had a kick.
