In my 50+ years of gym memberships throughout California, AC4--Goleta has been the best gym experience I've had. For many reasons. Here are a few, in no particular order, but I will indicate when a reason is especially important. This gym is family-owned and designed by Anthony (owner) to accommodate a category of members who need access to weights (free and machine) and workout space, but who don't want to be surrounded by the annoying negatives of the traditional gym culture. I'm there to work out and appreciate fellow clients who respect important gym etiquette rules and the "flow" process--moving from station-to-station without "owning" equipment or seats. New clients are introduced to the gym's rules (see attached photo) to help everyone understand that there are expected behavior norms in this setting, including common sense limits on some types of cell phone behaviors and prolonged "residence" on one or more weight stations. The gym has three main workout areas--a design circuit of machines; free weights, Smith racks, leg presses, stacks; and cardiovascular options: treadmills, recumbent bikes, ellipticals, and rowing machine (second floor). There are two additional workout spaces on the second floor to accommodate free exercise and stretching routines. Three unisex bathrooms, two unisex showers, lockers, two tanning rooms, and two hydrotherapy massage tables. There is ample onsite parking. This gym is a "key-access" gym, open to members 24-7, which is a big draw for me because clients tend to spread out their attendance over the entire course of the day, and there have been no occasions in my six years of membership here that I haven't found space and solace on the floor. Important also: this gym is always clean; the restrooms are clean; the equipment is clean. AC4 employees are frequently on the floor cleaning. And clients clean their own benches after they complete exercise at a given station. Clean is important. On a personal note, I'm a life-long competitive swimmer who needs regular weight conditioning to remain functional in the pool. I need a specific range of equipment and machines to maintain a balance between chest, back, and shoulders. This gym offers the weights and machines I need to ward off shoulder and back injuries from 60 years of swimming. I'm not here to dead-lift 300 lbs and chest-press my weight in iron. Tony has designed an effective combination of machines, free weights, and exercise areas that compliment my conditioning goals. What a joy to finally be at a gym where people actually smile and greet one another. The Music is soft in the background, so not overbearing. Great gym/health club. It's spotlessly clean and the machines are on the new side. Great staff and overall a friendly environment. What I like most about the gym is you can get a pretty good workout in less than an hour, UNLESS someone has reserved a bunch of machines. The reason this isn't a five star rating is it wears a little thin how patrons reserve machines by leaving water bottles, keys, sunglasses etc. on them. This seems to happen mostly from 12 to 1pm. Today, a Friday from 12 to 1, one gentleman was over the top. He reserved one machine by leaving his cell on it, another with keys, a third with sunglasses and a water bottle on a fourth machine. Another guy had two machines reserved also at the same time. The staff are apparently unable to do anything about it and it's hard to believe they're unaware of what's going on. I wish the gym would at least put up a sign asking people to refrain from this practice. It's not fair to the other patrons. read more

My New Year's resolution for 2022 was to join a gym, not an easy task with the many choices in SB and Goleta, and this thing called COVID, but after a in-depth search both on-line and in person, I found AC4 Fitness. I read through their website and connected with Their Story, Their Mission and Their Solution. They made the joining process on-line very easy, and was excited to finally plan on entering the gym and start planning for my much needed fitness program. After calling from the parking lot I got the okay to enter and met the friendly and knowledgeable Manager Lalo. He gave me the grand tour and explained the many fitness and membership options. And of course the highlight of that first visit was to get my very first Key Fob (KF), which gives me 24 hour access to their gym facilities. I had scheduled my first "intro" to the weight machines with Personal Trainer T.J. Fortuna. He asked all the important questions about my goals and workout routine, and he could tell right away that I was going through some joint injury issues. He didn't skip a beat and took me to the upstairs stretching area where he was spot-on with knowing exactly what I needed to do to regain the flexibility in my knees and hips. T.J. went above and beyond the call of duty in giving me the confidence that I need to get in shape and get my mobility back. Their Goleta location, on the corner of Fairview and Calle Real, is ideal for me and my busy schedule. And I really appreciate the cleanliness of their gym, and the use of the dressing room and private showers. I'm pretty minimalist when it comes to gyms; so long as it has basic weights, weight-lifting machines, and aerobic equipment (in my case, elliptical), I don't need much else. I go in, do my thing and get out. In this regard, AC4 didn't disappoint. The work area was nice and roomy, giving you many options on what and how to work out. Barbells, dumbbells', pully systems, etc...The upstairs has aerobic equipment (treadmills, bicycles and of course, my personal favorite, the ellipticals!). There's even a multipurpose room upstairs next to the treadmills, which I'm still not not sure what they do in there, but looks rad! The staff is usually pretty courteous, no real complaints there. The "orientation" session takes maybe 5 minutes, basically showing you where everything is, what you can and can't do, where the bathrooms and showers are (the latter being a huge plus in by book), and that's about it. Place even had a water massage thing & a tanning bed, if that's your thing (it ain't mine). All in all, for $40/month, you can't beat this price! read more

I've been going to this gym for a while. It is top notch. First off, it is always clean. The machines are wiped down and there aren't any broken machines. Second, they are open 24 hours. I don't have to rush to the gym to make it before closing. I can come in at any hour with a key. Third, this gym is for people who like to workout. It's not a talking and hold up the machine gym (though people are friendly). But people actually train here and sweat to reach their fitness goals. I love it. I love this gym. During the lockdowns they suspended membership payments while they were closed when other gyms didn't. The gym is always clean and staff are super friendly. Other gym members are kind and respectful and the overall culture is good. There are machines for people like me who like to lift heavy and do a mix of cables and free weight. When everything re-opened during COVID, I called AC4 to see if I could check out the gym. (Unfortunately, there aren't many gyms in the SB or Goleta area) The employee told me that they aren't allowing anyone new and that was the entire conversation. There was no follow up of when it could possibly be open to new clients and no info was taken down. I can't write a full review, since I didn't get the chance to try out this gym. After sending a very opinionated email, produced below, representing a very interesting and personal view of the pandemic and the economic situation (look at the situation now?), this gym outright cancelled my membership after I, in turn, replied to their email with my own view of the situation. Did they bother replying to me? No. How do I know I did not get cancelled by accident/mistake? Well someone forgot to remove their forwarded message when they forwarded my own email to the cancellation service, and the cancellation service informed me. Did my email imply I might not want to patron a business acting so recklessly during a pandemic that has claimed so many lives? Maybe. But is that a breach of my contract with the gym? Is having a diverging opinion reprehensible? Is freedom of speech so badly respected that it leads the gym's owner to not bother even replying, apologizing, or thinking the situation through, and forward my email to the cancellation team? AC4 seems to think so. For reference, the day after they closed because of the pandemic, I emailed them my support and told them they could keep billing me during the entire time they were closed, as I enjoyed the establishment a lot, and the people too. Did I expect to be treated this way a couple months later? Most certainly not. Careful where your trust lies when you deal with this business! Email sent to all members on July 17: "Dear Member: We have received confirmation from the County of Santa Barbara that the recent mandated closure also applies to Private Key Clubs. Consequently, we are no longer able to provide club access for members. We apologize for this inconvenience. Additionally, there will be no August 1st billing. At this writing there are 51 known cases of Covid-19 in Santa Barbara (population of 90,000) and 7 cases known of Covid-19 in Goleta (population 35,000). These are known cases (not hospitalizations, which is a far lower number). These numbers represent a relative average since the go ahead to reopen one month ago. To say there is no sense to the current mandated closure for the County of Santa Barbara is an understatement. To say that the arbitrary application of this closure makes no sense (liquor stores and cannabis stores remain open) is a gross understatement. Studies conducted in Europe show no evidence that Health Clubs have been a source of virus transmission (for clubs observing proper protocols). In fact, those who are the healthiest, are the most resistant to infection and prolonged illness. Exercise and proper nutrition are the only natural ways to boost your immune system. Of course, for others in the highest risk categories of our population (e.g., aged with heart disease, obesity, or diabetes), they should take every precaution and avoid public places. If you are concerned about the shutdown of our economy, millions of people losing their jobs, their businesses, their retirement, the additional 8 trillion in debt that we are leaving our children and grandchildren, and the out of control hysterical media narrative driving our public policy, then we encourage you to contact your elected officials. I can't believe I never left a review for AC4 until now. A little over 3 years ago I joined ac4 with the goal of losing 30 pounds. In 3 months of dedicating 6-7 days to this gym and just overall eating a little healthier or smaller portions of the unhealthier stuff, I was able to lose 35 pounds. Everyone's gym goals are going to vary, wether it's losing weight, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, getting swoll, etc. but I think this gym can satisfy pretty much everyone's needs. Their rates are far cheaper than any other gym in town, (40-45$ depending on the rate you choose) they are open 24hrs which for me was great because my schedule is always changing and I needed to be able to work out whenever I can find an hour or two in the day. It's kept very clean, even the showers and changing rooms are nice. They have tanning, hydro massage, WiFi, 2 changing rooms, 2 shower rooms, 2 restrooms. The bottom floor is mostly weight machines and free weights for you swoll gym rats out there. Upstairs is all cardio. Bikes, treadmills, stair climber etc. The ONLY thing I wish this gym had was towel service. I understand them wanting them to lessen their ecological footprint, but it would be nice, just sayin. read more

I recently joined this gym and I like it so far! It's close to my house and conveniently located next to the freeway for easy access to the freeway on my way to work in the morning. Members get a key fob entry buzzer thingie for 24 hour access, which is a real benefit for me. Being at work at 8 on a Sunday isn't a problem since I can go to the gym at 6 (hooray.)! There never seem to be more than a 8-10 people there (again, I'm mostly there at the crack of dawn or mid-day), so I haven't ever had to wait for a cardio machine or the right weights. VIPs can pay more for tanning or a hydromassage bed. Other +/-s: + private shower/changing rooms - only 2 of them + bathrooms upstairs too! + personal TVs on half the ellipticals :D - small, so no classes offered read more

I've checked out a few other gyms, sure they have many other things to check out, but AC4 is simple and easy to workout at, when I get off work late I can come in swipe my keyfob and enjoy a nice workout, everything is nice and clean about this place. The one thing that stands out about his place is that there building runs on treadmill power, which is great, and they're a paperless sign up. The price is very nice and cheap. No, it's not a big gym with classes and a swimming pool, but I knew that when I signed up. What it IS is a small, clean, friendly place where I really enjoy exercising. I usually come at odd hours when there are only a handful of people there, but I occasionally go at what seem to be "peak" hours and there's always room for me to have the workout I want. I love that the clientele is diverse in age and body type and I love that there aren't pictures of sinewy "afters" on the wall. I've gone to gyms where it really felt like everyone was trying to look better than everyone else, but here everyone just seems to be happy doing their own thing! read more

AC4 is a great cardio only gym. If you're looking for ellipticals, bikes, recumbent bikes, treadmills and the odd stair master this facility is perfect for you. I would not advice this gym for anyone who is interested in beginning strength training or bodybuilding. This facility is missing almost every important piece of equipment needed to start more popular strength training programs such as Stronglifts 5x5 or Starting Strength. Due to the lack of these pieces of equipment it's almost impossible to do any compound exercises. The facility does have a smith machine labeled "The Jeff Machine" (I do not know why) which should really never be used for several exercises ie: bench press, squats, deadlifts due to it's slant because it promotes improper form in beginners and will result in severe joint pain, impingement and damage over time. I joined just a few weeks ago and love it. The gym is owned and operated by Tony Calhoun and his two sons, Ian and Connor. The gym is named in honor of Tony's other son, Anthony, who was killed in an auto crash in 2009. Their story and commitment to making the gym a reality after tragedy, in addition to their environmentally conscious approach confirmed for me that I was in the right place. I was super impressed when Connor remembered my name after only my second visit to the gym. Having access 24/7 makes life even easier, and there's rarely an issue with availability of machines at any hour. I've found the other clientele to be polite and discreet - everyone pretty much keeps to themselves. The facility and equipment is always clean. I'm reticent to praise the Hydro Massage as so far there's rarely ever a wait for a table, but that alone is so worth a VIP membership. Second location is opening soon, near La Cumbre. Ac4 Is a good little gym in the heart of Goleta that is environmentally friendly(the cardio machines generate power back into the grid). It is especially great for me because I can jog a mile to get there and it has 24 hour access. What makes me drop a star off this place is for selfish reasons; 1.) there is one machine that most gyms have that I like the best but is absent from Ac4. 2.) There is only one bathroom in the whole place, which can be a bit frustrating at times. 3.) NO towel service :(. Besides those very minor flaws, it's a very inexpensive gym that has enough for anyone to get a great workout at any time of the day! read more

I love coming to AC4 for several reasons: 1) It is conveniently located next to my work. It is just a short drive and I can get in a killer cardio session during my lunch break. 2) During lunch, it is generally not busy and I can get on any machine of my choice 3) The staff is super friendly 4)The filtered water is a bonus! 5) AC4 has house rules set to keep everyone comfortable during their workout 6) This is the cleanest gym I have ever been to. The staff is constantly cleaning and keeps their gyms spotless. Unfortunately, the wonderful news has spread to the community and both gyms locations have become quite busy during peak hours (5-8 PM). It used to be easy to grab any machine desired but now there is a queue during this time. Also, I like to incorporate HITT into my cardio sessions and the treadmills become unstable after I increase the speed above 10.0 (at both locations). The other gym I attend, I increase the speed up to 12.5 and do not have this issue. Otherwise, I would have given AC4 5 stars. read more

During COVID and it being shut down I was bummed but then reopening it was constantly clean and every machine wiped down between members. We quit the gym over their approach to COVID. It was not an easy decision because the gym is quiet, clean and has the the equipment we like. But the management is anti-mask and anti-public health protections. For example, they displayed an anti mask flyer and a "freedom" rally flyer on their front counter, sent an email to members recommending a film that suggests COVID science is covering up alternatives, and they do not enforce mask rules. Staff do not wear masks, through members are free to do so. No one criticized me when I wore a mask, but machines can be close together and the person running or biking next to you may not be masked (and may not be vaccinated) so it felt uncomfortable. The anti-science material was also troubling after losing my sister to COVID. At this point, the evidence on the effectiveness and safety of masks is far too solid to ignore. We will look for a gym that more actively protects members from COVID. read more

I just signed up a week and have been here 5 times so far. It's a great gym for beginners. Quiet, clean, friendly staff and people. You don't feel intimidated like you do at bigger gyms if you're just starting your fitness journey. Most of the machines are usually free and people don't camp on them. The hydro massage is great for after your workout and I like the fact that they have private showers and dressing rooms. Highly recommend AC4 if you're looking for a gym membership. read more

I just joined this gym over a month ago, and I enjoy the convenience of the location to where I live and it's open 24/7. However, during the peak hours, its hard to find parking, and it is pretty crowed. I still think it's worth it, I use the gym early in the morning and late at night. Very nice facility. It is very clean and the 24 hour availability is uncomparable. I have found myself coming in at 11pm before, at this time, most if not all other gyms wold be closed in this area at that time. In addition to his, their Eco-water system is a strong addition. Some things that I would add to this companies two gym locations is a fly machine as another option in addition to their cable fly machine. After my terrible experience at Spectrum, I am happy to say I have found my home!! AC4FITNESS is an amazing gym. It is a locally and family owned gym with a wonderful and knowledgable staff. I mainly come to this gym during non-staffed hours, since it is a 24 hour self keyed gym; however, when I do come during business hours the staff is so friendly and energetic. I have had the pleasure of speaking with the owner, Tony and his to sons Ian and Connor and even feel like I have come to know them on a personal level. The ECO-FRIENDLY gym is very affordable starting at 29.95 a month for a basic membership and 39.95 a month for VIP. Personaly I cant get enough of my VIP membership which includes 24/7 gym access, tanning booth access, access to the wonderfully relaxing Hydromassage beds, and wireless internet access. The tanning booth ability alone is a steal when a membership at a salon is roughly $50.00 alone. To have access to all four of these amenities is an absolute treat! I am more than happy to call this place home as I have never had a bad experience with the staff or members.
