The entire process was extremely easy - you fill out a form and they get back to you within a couple of days. They will work with you and your price point and give great recommendations for both brands and numbers to ensure that your bar is well stocked. They gave great recommendations for wine service and have the ability to go local or global with their selections based on your preferences. The best part? The delivery and pick up was incredibly easy and made for an enjoyable end to the night since we just got to walk out the door. Ace is absolutely THE BEST place to purchase beverages for events in the DC metro area. Period. They are professional, knowledgeable, easy to work with, incredibly nice, and they genuinely care about the customer. I've now enlisted their help for a rehearsal party, a wedding, and two large funerals. All were catered and involved several vendors and moving parts. You know who was the easiest to work with? Ace. How it works? You call them and say you're having a party and what you think you'll need. They'll provide excellent recommendations, not just what wines and liquors (good quality and reasonably priced), but also how much. Then you tell them when you want it delivered and for a nominal fee, they drop it off - on time, no fuss, and efficiently. Best part - if you happen to be the kind of person (like me) that worries obsessively you won't have enough of [enter anything here] so you always order too much? No big deal. Ace accepts unused items for return and makes it so easy. All you have to do is make sure that labels aren't wet or warped (very reasonable) and either arrange for a pick up or drop them off (tip: arrive at least 15 min before closing bc they will unload for you). ACE was exceptional to work with to provide alcohol for our wedding reception at Top of the Town. Prices were awesome and they had a great variety. Romain was a great communicator. He provided a proposal right away, managed all of the logistics to bring the alcohol to our wedding site, and picked-up any unopened bottles. They issued the refund right away for anything that wasn't consumed. We'd use ACE Beverage again as they were super easy to work with! Made our wedding day a breeze and uncomplicated! ACE was highly recommended to us and it was clear to see why. They were extremely responsive, helped us think through the appropriate alcohol mix for several small events and one large scale event, and provided both delivery and pick-up services. Their prices were reasonable and competitive and they also offered a buy-back option. We used ACE for a Thursday evening event, Friday rehearsal event, and for our wedding reception. While the amounts needed were not exact, ACE provided their rationale and reasoning. They were also able to provide recommendations based on price and items that were heavily reviewed. While we were disappointed when they ran out of an intentional selection of wine that we had made the day of our wedding, they were able to supplement it with a wine that was satisfying, less expensive, and made this swap without worrying us the day of our wedding. Joe and their staff were professional, attentive, and provided great advice. Despite them running out of something that we had requested, we were pleased with their customer service and professionalism and would certainly consider using them for future events. read more

ACE beverage was easily one of the best decisions we made at our wedding. One of the top priorities of our big day was to have awesome food and drinks + a wild dance party - ACE definitely made these dreams come true!! First of all, Alina was very easy to work with. I told her our exact budget and she put together a combination of options based exactly on this budget and preferences. We went in to the actual store with my in-laws to grab a few bottles of wine to test out - my FIL is not one to mince words, so it is with the utmost respect to ACE bev that I say this: he was impressed by their knowledge and expertise. Alina offered us several selections (wine) based on the food we were serving and we took them home - my in-laws loved all of them. We submitted our final order to Alina and arranged for a drop-off and late-pick up at the venue (extra charge, but SO worth it!). We ultimately ordered more than we had originally planned as ACE will take back anything that is unopened and unchilled. Apparently we throw one heck of a party though because when ACE came back later that evening for the pickup, we had nothing left! One of the things I valued the most in working with ACE was their honesty. They did not try to upsell me or push me into adding things that I did not want. I so appreciated this as I navigated the planning of our big day, and this honesty and professionalism of all their staff is what ultimately made me feel comfortable to order more than we had originally planned for (thank goodness we did this!). I cannot recommend ACE enough - I was originally planning to do all the alcohol ourselves/with family help because I thought it would be too expensive otherwise. Ace did the alcohol for our wedding and it was completely hassle-free - emailed them with a headcount, suggested a few refinements and additions to their suggested purchase order, put down a deposit, and paid for what got used night of. They coordinated with our planner/caterer to completely handle pick up and dropoff and we didn't even have to think about it day-of. I haven't been this giddy walking around a store since I visited Kiddy Land in Tokyo in 2005 (and I'm not a toy person). I read about Ace Beverage in a Post article yesterday detailing where to buy Guyanese rum. While I wasn't immediately in the market for rum, I figured they might have some other obscurities. Holy crap. I love this place. I was greeted by Steve, the owner and "wine guy". I ran down a list of things I was looking for, and he told me that while he wasn't the liquor expert (that would be Joe), I was welcome to come behind the counter and poke around. My first request was for D'Aristi Xtabentun, and after looking it up he determined that they had a bottle of it. Somewhere. Now, Ace Beverage is not the most organized liquor store I've visited, but that is half the fun. In looking for the elusive bottle, Steve even let me go back into the warehouse to see if I could find it. I was beginning to lose hope when, tada, he found not one but two bottles! Other finds: Orgeat (I don't even want to talk about my previous searches for this); Falernum, Fee Brothers everything, a gazillion rums, a gazillion bourbons. A good selection of beer, and I didn't even glance at the wine or champagne. I am getting excited just typing this. I also bought some Fentimans Dandelion and Burdock soda, which I haven't popped open yet. I'm sure it will be strange and delicious. The other major plusses are: 1. The unbelievable service. Granted I was the only customer in the store, but Steve talked to me for 40 minutes about their inventory. He helped me look for everything and happily tolerated my effusive and overeager blabbering. 2. THEY DELIVER. Apparently you just send them an e-mail with what you want and they bring it to your house. Yes. Steve said that most of their business revolves around catering and events and that they don't have too many walk-ins. This means that the store is probably rarely crowded. He also told me that he was surprised I hadn't heard of them, as they are the oldest liquor store in DC. They have been around since the 1940's, though only at the New Mexico Avenue location since the early 1990's (they used to be at the corner of 18th and Columbia, which he said was a parking and logistical nightmare). If you are into interesting alcohols and attentive service, this will be your candy store. I loved Ace Beverage so much that I actually asked him if I could work there. After Lydia H's fetchingly breathless review of a few weeks ago I was incredibly excited to come here. It took me three attempts as they close at 7.00pm mid week and at 6.00pm on the weekend. Or maybe it's the other way around. Anyway, the third time was the charm and for the last two weeks I have been drinking Zombies and Mai -Tais and serving them to anyone and everyone who comes in the door. Who is over 21. I must also publicly express my gratitude to Lydia H for introducing me, in her review, to D'Aristi Xtabentun. I had never even heard of the stuff before she wrote about it. I can tell you two things about it now: (1) These guys sell it for $17.99 a bottle (2) It is one of the most exquisite liqueurs that has ever danced on my lips. Let me describe it for you and you tell me what you think. It is distilled from honey. Not just any frikkin honey - but honey from bees who only use the Xtabentun flower, which is only available in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. It also has rum and anisette. It is a world class cocktail in its own right - but it has all these things already in it. I have served it to several friends now and they have all loved it - and several said it was the best thing they have ever tasted. It really is that good. I want to invest in shares of the company and take over their marketing in the USA right now let me tell you because properly sold this stuff weill fly off the shelves. I add it to my Zombie instead of a teaspoon of Pernod. But I also drink it on its own, after dinner, with ice, as well as with a delicious preprandial consisting of it, domaine de canton, gin , lillet blanc and some lime juice. So I was loving all of this. I asked them what other off the beaten track items they had and they pointed me to a $40 bottle of Antica vermouth - apparently all the top bars are serving this in their manhattans. My only quibble was that the top bars would not be serving that many manhattans at this time of year, and $40 for a vermouth? Bit too rich for my blood. But I did finally pull the trigger on a half bottle of Barolo Chinato. There were large blue buckets by the door - what's in there I asked . $5 bottles of wine. I mean, $20 bottles of wine for $5. Apparently a few got their labels scratched or torn and they were bargains. I gobbled up a few of them let me tell you . If you like booze - you will love this place. read more

I walked in looking for a Moscato D'Asti. After putting on my best "Help?" look, I was helped by not only one but two very kind women. The second woman struck me as perhaps the most intriguing woman I've ever seen. Her accent as she pronounced the names of the offerings from various countries was spot on in each tongue. She described their attributes in a dulcet tone, waving her hands gracefully in the direction of the bottles. She had on cute peep-toe heels and a knee length skirt. I want for a day to be as damned elegant as that! I instantly developed a girl-crush, dropped my eyes, bought my bottle of booze, and sent in my single guy friend to meet her. He came out with two bottles of who-knows-what... and he agreed, "She's fantastic." Addendum: The Moscato was excellent. read more

I met the guy who worked at Ace Beverage at Bourbon, he handed me his card and claimed that it's one of the best beverage stores in DC, if not the best. I been wanting to check out the store. They have short hours with most nights closing at 5 PM except a couple of days at 7 PM. Monday night was a great night to go. New Mexico Ave was a pain to get to and it was blended into the building we almost drove passed it. When I walked in, I was impressed with the Bourbon and Scotch selections. I was like WOW look at what they carried! However, my visit this time was specifically for a 2006 Gustave Lorentz Pinot Gris Reserve for which Ace was the only store that carried it. Last time I called they had 3 bottles I asked them to reserve for me but I never made it. Luckily they had 2 bottles left. The helpful lady also recommended Champagne Laurent Dauphine for $29.99 that I should try for the holidays - I am going to take that to a Xmas eve seven fish dinner party! Lastly, though I didnt remember the fantastic bourgogne I tasted at Volt but I thought I recognized the bottle. It was hard to remember after 11 glasses of wine. The wine was a 2009 Domaine Matrot Bourgogne Blanc. It was described: This chardonnay based white comes from vines situated almost entirely from the Meursault appellation. Super citric nose; on the palate there is some butterscotch. Rich, round, silky fruit. Creamy, buttery, juicy and succulent with lively acids and a sweet kumquat meringue finish.It is round and quite fruity, and works equally well as a rich white sipper on its own or as an accompaniment to grilled fish. reference: http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1045716 I saw the 2009 bottle there, decided to wing it and give that a shot. I checked the Volt menu at home it was right! Bingo! Hoorray! I went to Ace Beverage on the recommendation of a bartender at the Columbia Room. I live on Capitol Hill, so Ace was quite a hike for me, but I had the day off and was hosting folks for Manhattan's so why not. Well, lesson learned, definitely not worth it. Sure, I found everything that I needed there, but man, would it kill the staff to be a little friendly or crack a smile? Let me be clear, they were helpful, but I felt very much that it was bare minimum of helpfulness and they ultimately didn't care if I dropped dead right on the spot. For example, "Hi there, the lady mentioned you would be the best person for me to speak with about recommendations for making a perfect Manhattan," I say. Male clerks response, "All you need is bourbon or rye, sweet vermouth, dry vermouth and bitters," followed by silence and a blank stare. Well, thank you, sir. I know what the ingredients are for a perfect Manhattan but if you heard the words that were coming out of my mouth, well, I asked for recommendations not a list of ingredients. As I said, bare minimum of helpfulness, and there were only 4 other customers there as it was a Monday at about 2 p.m.: one was my friend who was looking for a particular chardonnay and experienced even less assistance than me, and two customers who were simply paying or picking up phone or special orders. Ultimately, I got the guy to speak after asking more and more questions like, "What kind of sweet vermouth do you recommend?" It was literally like pulling teeth. I shouldn't have ventured away from Schneider's of Capitol Hill. Even when they're at the height of busyness, they're friendly, offer tastes if appropriate, etc. Stay away from Ace Beverage if possible until they understand the relationship between service and revenue. However, like so many other establishments in DC that have poor customer service, they know that they will always have customers so why bother going the extra mile? read more

I've now had two, not so great experiences with this place. If you like your expensive wine served with sides of pretension and arrogance, this is your new wine shop. I'll explain my first experience and leave the second to your imagination. I'm originally from Minnesota and now live in the nice, cool climate of Northern California. In other words, I'm not used to this heat and humidity. I'm not complaining, just hand me an ice cold frosty brew. On one of my first sweaty evenings here in the Nation's Capitol, I swung over to Ace Beverage. With the sweat pouring down my face I strolled over to the beer section. The selection could be described as mainly microbrews. To be perfectly honest, I was kind of hoping for a beautiful, silverly-green square of Heine Light. I usually turn to microbrews for my darker beers and I mostly drink them in the winter and fall. A day at the ballpark, for me, means a Bud Light, rather than an expensive local beer. If you're like me, this place certainly isn't for you. I grabbed a light "summer ale" and strolled over to the checkout, which I kind of struggled to find amidst the empty boxes (probably filled with more arrogance). The employee behind the counter proceeded to let me stand in front of him for, oh, say two minutes while he looked at some paperwork mumbo jumbo. Without even making eye contact, never fully removing himself to acknowledge my desire for the purchase of some of his overpriced beer, he asked me, "May I see your, umm . . ." with a light flip of his hand. "My what?" wondered I. If you'd like to see my ID, please, just ask me. I'll show it to you. I have it right here in my wallet. After showing him my ID and handing over a bit too much money, I finally left with my now lukewarm beer. Maybe I'm being overly dramatic, but unless you are desperate for high priced wine or live right near this area, I'd give this place a pass. read more

Extremely solid and worthy selection of all types of liquor, which was my main focus on why I searched out Ace Beverage. I've been to Schneider's, Pearson's, and Harry's, but Ace has a better 'hard-to-find' selection. While Schneider's has breadth, Ace has quality. The other two are mediocre at best. As a Scotch and Bourbon guy, this place has some choice selections that I haven't seen anywhere else. Angels Share bourbon was right on the shelf when I walked in and most other places claimed they couldn't get any. After purchasing my bottle, staff member Joe and I discussed all kinds of selections at length. He used to work at Jack Rose saloon, so the man knows his liquor selection. He was baffling knowledgeable about everything, had superb tips, and upon delving further, he told me he had some Jefferson's Presidential Select 18yr bourbon in the back and gladly went back and sold it to me. I could tell he appreciated someone with a good knowledge of the fine stuff. Naturally, I bought that bottle too. I also saw some Springbank 18yr old single malt scotch on the shelf, which is practically nowhere to be found elsewhere. The whole complex where Ace is located has parking and they can validate for up to 1-hour and on Saturday's it's free all day. With their spectacular selection, ultra helpful staff, and ample parking... this has to be Top 3 liquor stores in D.C. easily. read more

So first, a disclaimer: Mary Leigh is a super-good friend of mine. She's also one of the phenomenal consultants here. And since my experience with Ace involves Mary's recommendation in wines, I'm reviewing a friend. Still, I think if you look down the other five-star reviews here on Yelp, you'll notice that I'm hardly out-of-line in my recommendation. So other than the fact that Mary's knowledge of wines is encyclopedic and her love of wine is palpable and infectious, what I love and appreciate most about her is that she's not a snob. In the slightest. Now, you may think she's a snob, because she knows how to pronounce "Châteauneuf-du-Pape" or "Gewürztraminer" and refuses to pretend that she doesn't. Or because she's not shy about sharing her opinions, both good and bad, about wine. You may think she's a snob because the way she can talk about a good wine can border on the breathless. And in each case, you'd be wrong. No, she's not a snob because she's more than willing to explore the low-priced end of the inventory, and search out those fantastic bottles that taste WAY more expensive than they cost. As a matter of fact, she's phenomenally good at this. And that's why, for our recent wedding, Ace was able to supply and deliver champagne - not sparkling wine, mind you, but Champagne - for 200 guests for $7 a bottle. And that champagne was so good that my uncle the HUGE wine snob e-mailed me the next day asking if I'd send him a photo of the label. So my only complaint about Ace? They're in DC. Hands down, the best liquor store in DC. Bad side? You need a car, or a whole lotta patience on buses, to get to it. For wine and liquor, the selection is impeccable, and the staff knows its stuff. I have never failed to find an exotic liquor that I have wanted there (including things such as Allspice Dram, french-made Creme de Banane, Framboise, and Mure, and a wide range of hard to find Mezcals and specialty bitters). It is my one stop shop for any and every cocktail party I have. Their wine selection is also large and has lots of high end vintages--but I would emphasize their strength is as a liquor store, as there are plenty of other good wine merchants in DC that are easier to get to. The staff is also knowledgeable and generally friendly and willing to help, and have never failed to provide me with good recommendations. Prices? Comparable to other places, though my bill often ends up being very expensive due to all the hard-to-find and specialty purchases. read more

Ace delivered the alcoholic beverages for our wedding as promised. That said, we were dissatisfied with several things that happened from the end of the reception until now, which is two weeks after our wedding. I don't enjoy leaving a negative review, but I do feel a bit cheated by their service and hope if you hire them you can learn from our mistakes. My advice is that if you work with Ace, make sure that when their representative comes to collect the items at the end of the event he or she documents in some way exactly what they are retrieving. This will prevent them from "mistakenly" taking back just opened bottles that according to the terms of the contract were supposed to be left with you, and it will give you an accurate count of exactly what was consumed. Without this knowledge, it'll be your word against theirs when you are eventually billed. We found it startling that although we didn't run out of liquor during the event, Ace still billed us for every bottle of whiskey, bourbon, gin, and vodka that we had asked them to have on hand -- which was 50% more than their projected consumption count to begin with, and far more than they estimated a party of our size would have consumed. Also, we felt it was unprofessional that they charged our credit card before providing a final invoice. We actually had to send them an e-mail asking for the invoice and an explanation of the bill. They were our only vendor to do this, and it's an action that speaks for itself. We wish we had received this advice beforehand, so we are leaving it now your awareness going forward. You can work with them, but be careful and document thoroughly. read more

We wanted to provide the alcohol for an open bar at our wedding, vs. paying the markup for our caterer to provide the alcohol. We were fortunate to find a vendor and caterer that allowed this, because it saved us a lot of money. Our caterer recommended ACE Beverage, and we chose them from three quotes we solicited. They were very easy to work with, very knowledgeable. They have a handy online form to fill out with the details of the event and what you are thinking for the bar. They made great recommendations for best value liquor, beer, and wine. Their initial quantities and budget seemed high, but their explanation was that if everyone pretty much drank only wine, only beer, or only liquor, there'd be enough for everyone. Obviously, that wouldn't happen, but it could and we'd be covered. Another quote we got had significantly lower quantities, but they were trying to stay within our stated budget (we didn't really know what our budget should be). We ended up going with ACE but nudging their quantities down a bit, coming in about in the middle between ACE's high quantities and the other's low quantities, and it worked out great. The way ACE operates is that you put down half of the estimate, they deliver, and after, you return whatever is unopened and un-iced. Then you get credited for all those returns, and just pay any additional consumed over the half-down deposit. (I think the 50% is the minimum, so if you returned more than that, you wouldn't get money back, so the way it worked out for us, it's good that we took the quantities down a bit.) Our caterer was familiar with ACE and knew to tell the bartenders "open as you go" to avoid opening bottles that would not be used. We returned enough that we had very little left to pay after the wedding. I will say, that had our caterer had another bartender working, which they probably should have, people would have not had to wait at the bar as much, and probably would have drunk more, so we wouldn't have returned as much. Finding a venue who allowed us to bring our own alcohol (as long as it was served by a licensed bartender--provided by the caterer) saved us SO much money and it was so easy, thanks to ACE. Ordering was easy, changes were easy. Delivery was on time. Returns were quick and easy. Highly recommend! read more

This place is one of the best liquor stores in dc - it is not a "cheap beer" store like the person below me apparently wanted - it prides itself on stocking hard to find liquors and they will order pretty much whatever you want. This is where the high quality bars in the area (like Central) get their liquors. The people who work here are very nice and very helpful. They have a significant wine selection as well. read more

I called Ace Beverage from out of state to see if they could deliver wine to our daughter for her Birthday.Not only did they deliver promptly but they took the trouble to include a card and lovely gift bag.it was a beautiful presentation. This place is really great! They have constant special deals on their wines - my wife and I aren't big drinkers, but sometimes we like to pick up a bottle of red with dinner. Good selection but the service is awful. I guess the staff knew we were not regulars and basically ignored us. We ventured to Ace for a nice bottle of Mezcal....$120 so it wasn't like we were buying cheap liquor. So I guess I am rating this liquor pretty strongly based on their service when their selection is truly good. If I have to go back, I will, but I will surely look for other liquor stores, like Schneider's, to get my good libations. read more

This is a review for the Single Malt Scotch Section only. Ok Malt Maniacs, you might think that this is the place right? Wrong. A selection of easy to find malts, but at more than MSRP prices. No specials to speak of. the harder to find malts they have are near ridiculous in price compared to what you can find online (at even an average place). McArthur's (Bassins) had a section double this size with prices on par with or $8-12 cheaper per bottle. This was like going to an over-priced Vinyl or Comic Book store that is in love with itself. Service was fine. I did notice the old ladies coming in and buying 10 bottles of wine were well-treated, so if you are into that then go for it. I wont be going back for the Single Malts. read more

OK... Nice wine selection. I wish they were more friendly to the people that work in the building. It appears that we're their most routine customers. Every single occasion that I've walked in after 4:30 I have been ignored. I've only been asked if I needed help my first visit after wandering through each aisle for about 10 minutes. I wouldn't come back if were not conveniently located in the building. Everyone deserves great customer service. *shrug* I guess they're best known for their catering service, which I wouldn't be too inclined to consider given in-store service. read more

We hired Ace Beverage to supply beer and wine for our wedding in Arlington. Less than two weeks before the event, we discovered that Ace could not fulfill the contract because of technicalities with the Virginia's Alcohol Beverage Control. Ace customer service essentially shrugged off the issue and made excuses -- and we had to scramble to find a way to provide drinks at our wedding. Buyer beware if you're using Ace to supply alcohol to your event in Virginia! read more

Based on recommendation from our Caterer, we used ACE to supply the beer, wine and liquor for my daughter's wedding at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. The recommendations they gave were great. The pricing was spot on target and enabled us to have the flexibility we wanted. The venue is a great place, but can be challenging from a logistics point of view, especially considering the Sunday night time slot. Was interested in an Aviation drink and the recipe called for creme de Violette and Marchino. The Virginia ABC stores didn't even know what the liquors were. They kept saying "You mean creme de Cocoa". Called Ace and they had both in stock. ABC said they could order the Marchino but didn't' know WHEN it might come in and ABC said they didn't know if they could order the creme de Violette at all. We used Ace Beverages for our wedding this past November. Our caterer suggested them because we wanted an extensive variety of beer, wine and alcohol and we wanted the option to return unopened bottles after the event. My primary point of contact at Ace was Alma Gensler and she was a pleasure to work with throughout the process. She was very responsive to all of my questions. She assisted with determining the quantity of alcohol needed based on our numbers and she suggested four excellent wines for our big day, all at a very competitive price! Ace was able to deliver all of our alcohol right to our door and they were able to pickup our leftovers on the date, location and time of our choosing. I would highly recommend Ace! read more

I just turned 21 and wanted to buy my first bottle of wine in the States. This place is close to my apartment, so I decided to check it out. Really great selection, and the clerk was able to give me lots of advice and guidance. After an incident with my ID (who knew you couldn't use an expired license as ID, thank goodness I had my passport!) he was able to check me out and send me on my way. Great service, great selection, and good prices. This will definitely be my default wine/liquor store while I'm in the AU area. read more
