I spoke to the payoff department and asked them to allow an online transfer but they wouldn't budge. On top of that, they charged $184 to notify my county recorder that the loan is paid off and they can be removed from my property title. I'm certain that letter is automated and cost them no more than $3 including the cost of programming and running their computer spread across all the loans they close.
