Achill Cliff House offered room and board for our little adventure with a comfy room and bed, awesome views and a nearby pub. Since the surf was wee wee (Irish for very, very small), we decided to hike to the top of the local mountain (aptly named "Cliff Mountain") and were treated to magnificent views of the Orkney's. After the hike, we asked about a pub and were pointed to a building a short walk away and warned "It's a Republican bar." Thinking of the GOP in American politics, we were a bit shocked when we entered the darkened interior of the pub and found numerous 8x10 B&W photographs of hooded men with guns. Big guns. The not-for-hunting-animals-type guns. We realized the difference in politics immediately. I bought a t-shirt emblazoned with a pro-Sean Fein fist holding up an M-16 and avoided any political talk. It was safer to just drink the Smithwick's and remark how beautiful the island is. For a clean room, good food, friendly inhabitants and remarkable hikes with views of the N. Atlantic, Achill is a great choice. We had to find other islands for any sizable surf, though. P.S., no pets allowed

It's funky slightly mad design style is very refreshing. The establishment is big.... goes way back from the street. Our room at the back was gloriously huge with a great bath and shower, king size bed and comfy sofas/chairs and even a chez long covered with zebra print! The room was very quiet and thus we slept well but would have been assisted by another blanket as the duvet was too warm for a summers night. Good selection of in room beverage tea/coffee, small fridge made for a comfortable stay. All the staff were lovely but Adrian deserves a special mention; he was young enthusiastic and chatty and made one particular supper in the bar very enjoyable. Despite only being young (still at school!) he had natural charm and affability. Our selection of food dishes were all delicious and the bar area provides a contemporary atmosphere.

If you are a light sleeper make sure you ask if there is a disco on the night you are staying or if you can be located away from the noise and the nightclub is within the main hotel building. Plenty of parking at the front and rear and you know you are attending a big event if they have turned on the fountain at the front!

After that, we went to dinner where our party was seated at a large round table which was nice so that we could see and talk to everyone. The menu was interesting and I had been craving chicken and was happy to find it there. They brought all 11 meals at once and presented them. Nice touch! Chicken was tasty. Afterwards, we had drinks at the bar and played some snooker (we kind of made up our own rules). The bartenders were very friendly. We had breakfast thr next morning which was nice.

Inishbofin is one of my favourite places on earth and between the walks of the island, the wonderful people and the welcome, I don't know which I love the most!
