This pet food store is a wonderful part of Brooklyn Park Slope. You can tell the native Brooklynites from the pilgrims in the neighborhood. The grumblers, are the newbies to Acme Pet Food. Oh, the store is too small, but the don't mention the cleanliness and the neatness given the amount of products in the store. Acme owners and employees are exceptionally friendly and helpful. When you enter you are left to browse as you may see other items that interest you or your pets. I adopted my dog 9 years ago and since then Acme is my go to place for everything dog related items, including advice. They order anything you need, answer any questions, free same day delivery. I have had a lot of pets so I have been to a lot of pet stores in the past 40 years, both in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Acme is one of the good ones. It is well maintained, well stocked, and has a lovely orange cat to greet you as you enter. The owner, Brian, always has helpful advice if you ask him (he really helped me with a recent issue with one of my dogs, who is very shy). Brian's vibe is sometimes a little grouchy , but he is actually not! The other staff are also very responsive, friendly and quick to be of assistance. I am always happy to shop there. read more

I popped in to have a peek at their products and was bombarded with each employee asking me if I needed help every few seconds. They were overbearingly helpful. It was annoying. The space is small but they have a nice selection of pet food which is expected considering the name of the store. In terms of toys, their inventory could be better. Prices are normal for a independently owned pet store. I'd probably come back purely to purchase pet food but next time without my dog. Great place, I used to buy from here a long time before, but now can afford delivery! I love that - they deliver to all of Brooklyn, so I can order on the phone and get it delivered in Flatbush...super plus - I can order cat food they don't supply in the store! This place is a little pricier than the chain stores, but of course, since it's a small operation. I'm telling you, it beats lugging all that cat food home every other day and then dreading to take home heavy ass cat litter too. $5 delivery you can't beat it. It's more of an icy indifference to you; a slight vibe of your existence itself being absolutely unnecessary. In short; these people are cat people. Not warm, not naturally inclined to engage in friendly behavior for too long. That said they are the only thing standing in between pet owners poisoning their beloved furry friends in the Prospect Heights area. Their selection is pretty good . Here you will find brands like Wellness and Newman's own , but the dog food selection is not very broad. They seem to be packed to the gills with dry food, medication and dog and cat paraphernalia and treats! No matter how you feel about the people, the service is still professional. Besides, big corporate chains like Petco may win on variety , but they are a long train ride away and it's not exactly like they are blowing my mind with customer service. Not the cheapest, but incredibly convenient & well stocked. They carry Wellness small breed healthy weight (my go-to dog food), musher's secret, supplies for dog anxiety (my pup is new to NYC), and poop bags, which pretty much covers all of my dog buying needs. Only wish they'd stock the kind of bags I (feel silly but) like to buy: green recycled bags that are lavender scented in the rolls (yes, I feel ridiculous typing that and even more so buying them but it's nice when you can't find a trash to not have to smell poo for blocks and blocks). I recently adopted a dog from the SPCA and she wasn't eating. She was already on the skinny side so I was worried and stopped into Acme for some advice. The guy behind the counter (owner?) was as other reviewers noted a little gruff, and pointed out that my dog was probably just nervous and adjusting to a new environment and more interested in checking stuff out, and getting settled in than actually eating yet. Which was true, she had a big couple of days. But he also suggested some dried chicken liver treats to sprinkle over her dry food. WORKED LIKE MAGIC. My girl chowed down and has been eating regularly since. I don't mind a know it all attitude when someone can back it up and actually does know, and this guy did. He also listened and provided a solution and some info that helped me worry less. As a new first time dog owner I'll take all the info I can get! I will definitely be back. read more

I don't know why so many people here seem to think the people who work here are 'dicks' when I've had nothing but great experiences. Plus I'd much rather go here than support some crappy corporate behemoth like PetCo which only sells shitty rejection-organ meat food. Purina versus Wellness....hmm tough call. Sure, the prices may not be 'the cheapest,' but then again, a) they sell quality products and b) a small store has gotta survive! Acme is the best! Consistent pricing, friendly service, and free delivery (which matters when you have four cats and need to buy a lot of food and litter). Once when I took in a stray they sent someone over with a litter box even though it was outside their usual delivery hours. Super super nice folks. I love that when I call and say "How are you?" the fellow who answers the phone always says "Everything is wonderful!". It brightens my day every time. I hope that someday they shift to an electronic inventory and ordering system so I don't have to recite my credit card number and address every single time. Great customer service! I had completely run out of food for my new dog and went to ACME (for the very 1st time!) to pick some up. When I arrived at the store, I discovered they had just closed for the night 10 minutes earlier. Their gate was halfway pulled down and the door was locked. As I saw a man still in the store standing behind the register, I knocked on the window and explained that I was in desperate need of food for my dog and asked if he could let me in. Brian (who turns out to be one of the owners) was kind enough to let me in and get the food. On top of that, since he had closed the register for the night and could only accept cash, (which I did not have on me at the time!), he watched my dog for a few minutes while I ran to a nearby ATM to get cash. I love these guys and Knuckles & Louie are the best store cats ever! Acme's been around for at least the 15 years I've been in the neighborhood. The owners are two old school Brooklyn boys who couldn't be nicer and the rest of their staff has always gone out of their way to be helpful as well. My cat's had a bunch of medical issues over the years and these guys have always steered me right on what the healthiest food and meds were for my little guy and have also told me what things were a waste of money. The store's small but they still manage to keep it well stocked and carry brands that I can't even find at Petco. I love being able to support a local business in my hood. read more

So, I used to use Acme before I moved to the west coast, and very happy that they are still here now that I have returned to Brooklyn. I was forced to use the big name chain shops out there because they were all over the place, and really had no other options. I got a new dog, tried to use the same brand of food that my old dog used, but didn't agree with him. I actually called Acme for recommendations. The food that I feed my dog now, they carry the brand by not the same type, but are able to order it for me and best of all delivery. I don't see the issue with the guys. They have been around forever, and will probably know what's better for your pet then you do. Maybe the problem is the "way too sensitive" and emo people moving into Brooklyn. They are running a business, know what they are doing and for some people, probably like your pet more than they like you. Don't expect to become best friends, but do expect to get the best options for your pet. Otherwise, welcome to Brooklyn. read more

I love this store. My parents used them since the early 90's when I was growing up. Now that I'm on my own, and have a dog of my own too, the tradition continues. I usually like the walk along Prospect Park and Grand Army Plaza to get to their store from Park Slope, but when the Cold, Rain, and Snow come up I appreciate the Free Delivery. I'm not sure about the below post by Jay B., but I have never seen or had a problem with their prices. I think it's a little too quick to jump on this whole price gauging accusation. I have been to Animal Fare where they wanted to charge me $6 more on a bag of premium dog food. CVS and Rite Aid sell the same stuff too, but you can get a stick of deodorant for $5 at one and $4 at another. Every store is different, but you work with the one that is best for you. I doubt it was the same size for that much of a difference. They do make the same food in different size containers..... Economy does have us by the proverbial balls. Human food has gone up during this "recession" as well, so why would our pet's food be any different? To be honest, if you want to buy your produce at the 99cent store then be my guest, but I would rather continue to deal with the local neighborhood grocer who has been here for years. Catch my drift? The guys who own the place know what they are doing and have been there forever for a reason. I trust them, our friends trust them, and so we stick with them. They usually have anything that you need, if they do not they have no problem referring you to someone who might. Hey, you have to do what works for you. These guys are awesome. read more

SO cramped, awkward, and uncomfortable. I've been in a few times and shrugged off bitchy comments about using my debit card and the annoying weaving you have to do through tiny aisles but my most recent visit will definitely be my last. I'm ordering online. I went in to buy a front clipping harness for my new pup learning to walk on a leash and got a condescending lecture front he owner about how harnesses don't train dogs to walk and I needed to buy a choke or prong collar. Absolutely not. Would never want to choke my dog and I wish I'd walked out then. I spent $70 (you're welcome) on a front clipping harness and was upsold dog treats the whole time I was waiting to pay. The kid was nice but just didn't know what he was saying. My dog can't have chicken and even after reiterating that and saying no to a few items, he kept offering me different chicken-based treats until I got to the register to pay. I'm sure thats a commission thing so no real problem but annoying. The store needs a remodeling and probably some customer service revamping. Either way, I'm out. And that harness worked like a dream by the way, nasty. read more

This is place is great, has a friendly and educated staff, a wide selection of healthy and quality food for cats and dogs, and the orange store cat is my fave. That $25.99 bag of Iams no-hair-balls cat food last 4-eva. And the hella heavy bags of cat litter are also the smart thing to buy (and yay they have free delivery!). This is a very cat lady-y thing of me to say, but i do wish they'd have some specials every now and then on stuff i've got to continue to buy (i.e. cat scratcher thingers). Only two cons for me are the very limited selection for non cat and non-dog food (there's no refrigerator section so not much at all to offer for turtles and reptiles), and the awkward layout of the store. Yes, the owners aren't going to kiss your butt and they're a little rough around the edges, but hey so am I so how can I really complain? They do help you out when you need it and don't bug you when you don't. I appreciate that. Also one of the owners is also a cyclist and I forgot my bike lock one day and really needed to get cat food right before the store closed, so he let me bring my bike inside. These guys are the BEST! First of all, Sunny and Louis - the resident cats - are total cutie pies. But more importantly, Julie and Brian are so kind and knowledgable. They listened to me go on and on about my kitten's crazy mysterious illness and helped me pick out food for him that was grain free and much healthier than what I had been using before. I am a regular customer here. They have the items I need, and if you need advice, they are knowledgeable. Not every store has the cat food that Clyde prefers, but they do have it and they have plenty of stock. The owners are often there working, and I find the staff is always offering to pull items off the shelf for me and bring it to the front. They even carried my 40 lb kitty litter to the street for me and put it in my bike trailer. So service, selection, and locally owned business. A good pet store all around. It would be perfect if their hours fit into my schedule. I would love it if they stayed open late one night. Or opened early one week day. read more

Go to this pet food supply store only if you want to be treated like total crap by the unbelievably rude staff. I have bought dog food here several times and always has a pretty normal experience. Not friendly, just business. Fine. Today I went in for dog food and tried to pull a bag slightly forward to see if there was a price tag on top (why the ef aren't there clearly marked prices on dog food?). The bag ripped slightly and some kibble started to come out. I felt terrible and went to get the woman working to show her what had happened. I apologized and explained I was looking for the price tag. She glared at me and told me the price. I told her I would like a bag but could not take the ripped one because it would spill all over the place before I got it home. She rolled her eyes at me and said "Well, let me get the next one off the shelf so you don't rip that one, too". I was stunned into silence. At the cash register she continued to huff and puff and glare at me until I finally said, "You know, there's really no need to treat me like this. Ripping the bag was a mistake" - at which point she just exploded into verbal abuse calling me arrogant and tons of other things. I told her if this is how she treats her customers I wouldn't be using the store again and she said something like "good riddance". The whole experience left me infuriated and sad for her. I pity those obese cats who have to live in that store with that terrible woman. read more

I've had 3 experiences with Acme and they were all horrible. The owners treat everyone as if you're wasting their time being in their store. If you ask about their delivery, they'll make you feel like shit about it and taunt you. They have a good location with no close competition and get away with treating you however they feel that day. I've been going to Acme for 2 months now, and it's great because of the close location. However, the people that work there are very rude. I just don't get it. I've noticed some reviews mention that they have had pleasant experiences going to Acme and communicating with the people that work there is fine - and I envy you! I wish it were that way for me. The woman that works there just gives you this evil glare and barely gives you the time of day when you ask a question. At one point, she was a total smart a**. The man that works there is a little nicer, but has a dry sense of humor and is a little off..it's just annoying when you're just trying to buy dog food. In the end, they have a pretty good selection of everything from toys, meds, food, accessories, etc. Also, the younger men that work in the store are extremely friendly and always willing to help me out. Been meaning to write this for a while now. I've been an on/off customer for about 4 years now. I don't live in Prospect Heights, or else they'd be my regular spot. The staff there knows their stuff. Every time I've had to ask a question - they've given me the attention and help I needed. I find their service to be...affectionately gruff, and I've come to really like all three of the regulars who work there (plus they have adorably sweet cats and a dog behind the counter). Their assistants are always polite and helpful, and back when I had a car they were always so nice about carrying stuff out for me. When one of my cats got very sick over the summer, I talked through canned food options with one of the gruff guys and he was really helpful. Then when the same cat was refusing all food, despite being recovered, I went in there and asked for other comparable food recommendations, and ended up telling him about it. The cat had been so sick, and now wouldn't eat, I was sort of convinced I was going to lose him. The guy gave me a couple food ideas and that was that. But then a few minutes later (you could tell he'd been thinking about it), he suggested something else - dry dog treats made of pure meat or something like that, that the cat might find too tempting to ignore if they were crushed up and sprinkled on food. I tried it, and it worked. It was the only thing to work by that point (even the vet's appetite stimulants weren't working). So, he totally saved my cat, who just had some sort of psychological fear of food that he needed to get over by coming across something too good to ignore (weird cat, I know). Also, I sort of split my purchases between them and the place walking distance from me (which I don't really like, but they're walking distance). I usually get my cat litter delivered from Acme and my cat food at the local place where I can carry it home myself. I might switch it all over to Acme though. Their delivery service has been great and I like to support them. Owning a small business (especially one as condensed as that one) is tough going. Believe me, I know. I think they're doing a good job of it. read more

The people at Acme have always been super nice to us. They are not super cheap. But, not outrageous. They are one of the only pet stores in all of Brooklyn that carries the food our dogs have come to expect. They have a good selection. They always have some cat friends to visit with. They know what they have in stock. And, they go out of their way to help us. It is the nicest pet store we have found so far and I would not hesitate to send my friends there. read more
