Talk about a hidden gem! This cute little bar/restaurant is located about 7 kilometers (4 miles) down several unnamed dirt roads, passing through several sugar cane fields. The only reason it's not impossible to find is because it's on the same trail that goes to the famous Ruins of Bom Sucesso Church.
It's located next to a little river or brook that's about ankle- or shin-deep. The owner of the bar, Thor (real name), had a few hand-woven baskets that are shrimp traps in the water. He even took out some shrimp as we sat there for us (now that's fresh!).
It's a very simple place and the bar's offerings are limited to beers, soft drinks and cachaça. If you prefer anything else, feel free to bring it with you (there is no charge or corking fee).
If you order ahead, he will prepare a free-range chicken stew ("galinha capoeira") with several side dishes. The problem for me was that I couldn't get a phone signal when I was here. Not to worry--my friend was able to order for us and we had a wonderful meal at an incredibly low price.
Nobody will rush you to eat and go--you may stay as long as you like and you'll be well-treated the whole time you're here. A truly unique experience that shouldn't be missed. read more
