I've come to know running marathons and ultra distance events as second nature to me. Starting in 2007 December till February 2018, I've done 100 marathons & ultra distance events collectively. There's always something out there that's pushing me along. Then enter, Across the Years. It's a popular one. Across the Years ultra distance endurance running event is a multi event that usually attracts the crazy with the most insane people you'd ever find on this earth. The event features a 10 day, 6 days, 72 hr, 48, hr, 24 hr, 12 hr, 6 hr, 100 miler, and marathon. Ideally, this race wants you to test your physical limitations (or perceived limitations) on your own two feet, no matter if you run, walk, crawl. You'll get more fun and excitement in a lifetime, at least that's what they told me. For myself though, I was on a goal to run a marathon or longer in each of the 50 states for the 2nd time around. I needed Arizona, so I decided to register for Across the Years. Registering is easy, since you can google Across the Years race and the link to the website will show up. Sign-ups are usually available on Ultrasignup.com. They only accept credit card thru online registration, but I think you still can register on site, if you decide to be at the location and decide to participate. Cash only I think, if you do race weekend, but best to do it early, to save money on the race registration for sure. It does get pricey if you procrastinate! The overall experience here at Across the Years ultra distance running event was interesting, fun, and wet. On the 2021/2022 event that spans after Christmas until well into the New Year, hence the event name. You do meet friendly veteran ultra runners, those trying to get 50 states - like me, and those who wish to experience a race in Arizona in the winter time. They attract a lot of people here, since it's one of the warmest places in the lower 48 united states, not including Hawaii. I arrived here at the race location - Camelback Ranch at about 7am via uber to an empty parking lot that was locked. However, as soon as I saw tents and activity, I knew that those were my people and got settled in. After getting checked in and settled, we all waited for 9am on the first day of the event to kick things off. The idea was to get as much course loops as possible before your event runs out. I signed up for the 24 hr event to see how much I can go before calling it quits. In 2021, I ended up with 50km, although I wanted to stop at the marathon distance, but I knew I can go further even though the rain and the colder than normal conditions made me think otherwise. The ambiance was cool and lively. The course was lit up at night, so we didn't veer off course too much. The aid station was stocked up with pretty much anything you'd need to keep going - physically and mentally. All in all, it was a good trip. I got what I wanted, but my secret goal was 50 miles in 24 hours, but stopped at 50km (31.07 miles) due to weather. The Across the Years ultra distance running event is located on the grounds of Camelback Ranch, the spring training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox MLB baseball teams. As mentioned before, registration is usually thru online and accepts major credit cards, although you may get in on race weekend and I assume its cash only. As for parking goes, there is a parking lot for campers and cars too, if you are participating. Best bet would be to check out the details and specifics on where to park on race weekend. If you decide to rough it, you can rent a tent and a sleeping bag. I did and it wasn't terrible, but I just happened to be sleeping on and off that morning instead of checking into a hotel for the night. The ground was saturated with the rain and it was cold, but I purchased the tent and sleeping bag beforehand, so it was money that I could have forwarded to a hotel, but chose to rough it out anyway. This ultra running event festival was as bare bones as you can make it. Just a bit over a mile loops as much as you can for the timed event you signed up for. After so many loops and the sun fades into the darkness, you wonder when is the fun going to start? 5.0 stars for the overall experience. 5.0 stars for the aid station people. So I texted them back, and made my way to Goodyear, observing all traffic and penal codes. It was a brisk AZ morning, so cold I felt ice cubes floating in my bladder... the cool light-up kind. I followed the crowd and stood in a line, because everyone else was, only to find I was standing in the wrong line. So I stood in another line... Yuko called while I was staging and racking my bike. Quickly finding me, we walked and waited for an hour inside her warm car. The guy in the minivan next to us, exited his vehicle to don a shorty wet suit. I found that extremely suspicious. If you see something, say something... which I did... to Yuko, who promptly rolled her eyes. I strolled into the pool area to watch the remainder of the competing kids, and found Tori. We posed for a few snaps, and then made our way to the starting line. It was so cold. I couldnt see my breath, but I knew it was there... so I decided to run with my heavy pull over hoodie As I jogged, I could feel my lungs starting to heave the chilled air, and by the canal, I detected the pungent stench of rotting carcases of fish... man, I hope they were fish I was slow. The women's corral released 2 minutes after the men's corral. I've never been passed up by so many women... outside of that Match.com speed dating debacle But I wasnt here to run... biking was my secret weapon... unfortunately, the transition was not. It took a while to change shoes, take off the fleece hoodie (which kept sticking to my awesome bike jersey), grab a beverage, check my phone for check in comments, etc. However, after I mounted my trusty steed, I was off! Shortly after passing Yuko about 1.4 miles into the 12 mile course, I dropped my chain, and forgot I was clipped in. As my legs twitched to free my shoes from the pedals, Yuko unknowingly passed me. I re-railed the chain, and took off for glory... passing Yuko again. My legs screamed out, and I said "whoa, shut-up legs". We were neck and neck, as we rode back to the staging area. I yelled out: "If you find yourself biking alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you're already dead!" Stripping down as the frosty air hang as heavy as a Wendy's Frosty, I made my way to the pool. "Ouch, ooh, aah, ouchie, yeowch!" I muttered, traversing the asphalt rode that separated me from sweet liquid freedom, until I reached the rug at the timer check point. I jumped in feet first, and was elated by the warm elixir that surrounded me. The heated pool felt wonderful as I started on my strokes, which lasted 20m until I hit my predecessor's foot. I paused a few brief seconds and stroked again, only to hit again. Maneuvering around her, I had successfully passed my first competitor. I started the second of eight lanes feeling superior, but the pool will not be disrespected, and I never trained on 50m lanes. The cold air came to thwart me again, as I started to breath heavily, causing me to feel like I wasnt getting enough oxygen. I flailed and floundered several times before emerging from the phlegm frappe that I helped add to. I went and grabbed my gym bag from the staging area, hurting my bare feet on the asphalt, returning to the showers, which were warm and inviting. There was no soap, but I rinsed like I've never rinsed before, and it was glorious!

As the race day become close, they kept sending e-mails with detailed instruction for how to pick up race packet and race day information. Picking up the race packet was available in Tempe about a week before the race day, it was nice as I didn't have to drive too far to do so. The staff there gave several good suggestions on what to bring to the race, and what to expect on the race day. As a first timer, I didn't know what to do. I also read a lot of online articles about what to do and what not to do... I showed up one hour before the bike drop off time. (2:30am wake up, 4:00am left house and 5:00am arrived at the YMCA). I was the first 20 athletes to show up and secured a very nice spot for my bike. Depending on where you rack your bike, it makes difference when you are competing and a few mins makes a huge difference in your ranking. I set up my transition area with a spare towel and laid out all the gears I needed for bike and swim. This is sprint, not Olympic, so much shorter distance. Many participants are so nice, experienced athletes were willing to share the tips. Wide variety of age group and fitness level participated the race. They have youth division and enjoyed watching kids trying their best. Race day staff was very organized, they were there to assist and help you get moving smoothly. They were there also to cheer for you and it was helpful. Based on many e-mails I received from them, many of them must be a volunteer. Since I enjoyed this event so much, I would like to volunteer at some of their upcoming events. As for my personal experience, this was a challenge I accepted from a friend in September. I didn't know how to swim nor I don't even own a bike. The first day of swim lesson, all I could go was 10m. I joined the race with rental bike. I didn't even own a pair running shoes until August. I ended up really enjoying a triathlon race. I have my eyes on the next race now. I will continue train until then. Lesson learned from my first race: warm up properly before the race. I felt tightness in my muscle at the beginning and it was very hard to loose up. Bring family and friends to cheer for you! It actually helps. Somethings I did right: Bring two sets up towels. One to lay out next to your bike to set up the transition area, show up early to secure good bike rack spot. Bring shampoo (they have lockers and showers to help you rise off after the race). Sandals to wear at shower. Big coat, hat and gloves to wear before the race. I had my east coast down coat with me and really helped to stay warm.

Colton needs to be recognized because once he took over helping us with the attractions our experience went from 3 to 5 stars. He explained everything thoroughly to us, helped me choose which would be best for having motion sickness, and overall just made our experience very enjoyable by paying attention to small details. It seems they were operating on a skeleton crew this day. We sat and tried to order food and there was only one server for everyone. Needless to say, it took quite a while to be able to even place an order. The go-kart experience runs like a well oiled machine and was probably the smoothest experience we had out of everything there. Overall we had a ton of fun, but this place really needs to work on training their employees for better customer service and experience.

The VR game was very immersive (reminded me of Disney's VOID but scaled down). The racing simulator and 7D experience was just ok. Waiting for attractions, there would be either no staff to help (and you're waiting in line for nothing) or an over abundance of staff hanging around.

My husband said it felt like he was driving around 55-80 mph, maybe. Unless you get a groupon the retail price is very expensive. It's a good experience and I recommend getting at least 8 laps or more.

My friends enjoy happy hour prices at Bar Louie right across from the entrance to the area arena and get the $15 of their bill. I prefer to simply park slightly farther out by the Outlets and walk. I also find it saves time leaving after the concert also. The closer $15 parking lots do not have workers after the concert helping to make the traffic flow efficiently. It took over 20 minutes for them to get out of the lot nearest the stadium.

You can tell it was designed to be a special place, and on the surface, it truly is adorable. That said, my experience left me feeling uneasy, mostly due to cleanliness and supervision concerns. I witnessed multiple children putting toys in their mouths (which is totally normal for kids), but what was concerning was that those same toys were often placed right back into shared play areas. While I later learned there is a designated bin for toys that have been in kids' mouths, this wasn't communicated upfront, and I didn't see it being consistently used or enforced. There also seemed to be inconsistency when it came to staff involvement. Across my two visits, I did see some staff members actively cleaning up and returning toys to their proper places, which I appreciated. However, I also observed others simply picking up toys and dropping them into corners of the rooms without any real organization or sanitizing. I completely understand that keeping up with kids is a challenge--I'm a parent too--but that's where consistent staff engagement becomes really important. Another issue was the level of parental supervision. Many parents were on their phones while their kids played freely. Again, that's ultimately a parenting responsibility, but in a shared environment like this, it contributes to the overall hygiene and safety concerns. I also want to mention that I found the staff presentation a bit unprofessional, which added to the overall impression that things weren't being closely managed. To be fair, you do sign a waiver regarding illness, and I understand that no play space can be completely germ-free. However, I did end up contracting chickenpox exactly 10 days after visiting, which makes me seriously question the effectiveness of their cleaning and sanitizing practices. Overall, this place is incredibly cute and full of potential. With more consistent staff involvement, clearer communication, better sanitization systems, and encouragement for parents to stay engaged, it could be an amazing environment. Right now, though, it falls short of what it could and should be.
