    Tucked away in a two house, three building campus, along a lovely tree-lined street, in the heart…read moreof Uptown, the Institute may be the single most amazing place in what has become an amazing part of Dallas, especially after the sun goes down when the streets get crowded, when music floats on the breeze and the breeze itself is awash with the mixing scents from some of Dallas' finest restaurants. The Institute offers classes, conferences, discussion groups, performances in film, art, poetry, history, politics.... in everything that makes a city, that makes a City come alive with culture, beauty and the life of the mind. Less a Think Tank -- though world class scholars gather here -- than a sort of reflection pool around which people gather to share visions, poetry, but above all lively and life-giving conversations. 40 some-ofd years ago, when the Institute was founded by exceptionally creative and truly visionary people, I did not think Dallas was ready for such an odd and wonky place as attractive and welcoming of street poets as University intellectuals but while Dallas may not have been ready for the Institute, the Institute was ready for Dallas and has served as seed and catalyst for a true Renaissance both of and in Dallas of a burgeoning arts scene and culture.
