I needed to do some research for a writing project so I took a blacksmithing class @adams_forge Ya'll. It was amazing. The instructor was knowledgeable and patient which is kind of what you want around fire hot enough to bend metal. The process takes speed, strength, and precision. All crafts highlight a body, mind, spirit, locus in our human experience. You have to summon a portion of courage to stand next to a forge and grab red hot metal. So ... my husband and I have taken a few classes at Adam's Forge - mostly blacksmithing at their old location. All the instructors have been great. We went to the new Simi location yesterday to take a silver jewelry making class with Chloe. It was amazing! My husband is a fabricator, so all of this stuff is easy for him. I'm not a crafter and my only talent with my hands is touch typing. Lol. But I got to make a passable bezel setting sterling ring with a cool stone. Chloe is sooooo patient. We're finally going to join the forge as members. It's a non-profit so the whole membership is tax deductible. And then you get a discount on classes (everything is always provided in the classes, so even the sterling silver we used yesterday was included in the class price). Nothing but awesome things to say about this place. And we love the new facility. read more

Adam's Forge is a great place to learn. The teachers are volunteers as this is a 501c3. They are here because they love their craft and want to share with the public. Each teacher is unique in their approach but they follow the same steps and want you to be happy with your piece even if it means getting a little creative or restarting. They care about their students enjoying the experience. As a regular student, my tip is raise your hand if you have questions or want to learn that extra level. The teachers are used to people coming in for fun and if you want to be held to that extra level, they're happy to give feedback. I've looked at other forges and AF has the most classes and I think it's a good value. I've taken some of the expensive classes and have not regretted a single one. My boyfriend and I attended a letter opener discovery class! It was so much fun and 100% worth the price. There was 7 people in the class that was about 4 hours long. There was 2 instructors that were both knowledgeable and kind. The instructors taught us how to make the letter opener from start to finish. What was important to me was that I actually learned! The instructors helped me understand the process, and gave me options on how to fix mistakes. It was truly a wonderful experience and I think my boyfriend and I have found a new hobby. He also did a more advanced class the next day and he felt that the discovery class was a wonderful introduction. read more

This was one of the best classes I've ever taken period. Just imagine what you think the perfect introduction to blacksmithing would be and it's better than that. I was blown away at how hands on it was and you literally do everything yourself with instructors there to answer any question and show you how to do every technique. Dossain was our teacher and he was born to do this. I am also a teacher of another trade and I can appreciate a patient, knowledgeable and excited teacher. I bought a discovery class earlier this year for my husband's birthday and decided to go too because we were both curious about blacksmithing. The class was pushed back (understandably so) due to Covid. But they reopened a few weeks ago so we finally got to go. First off, the forge takes safety VERY seriously, in general, which was awesome, but especially in the current times. Class sizes are small, outside, and everyone has to wear masks. And there's plenty of hand sanitizer. So, we felt very safe on that front. The forge is amazing! And since the discovery class with Keith - who is a great teacher (highly recommend him) - we've been back a couple times (to the open forge), and plan on going back more! We met Aram too - he was so nice! Can't wait to take a class with him. Adam's forge is so welcoming! I can't say enough about everyone there. If you're at all interested in blacksmithing - GO! I bought tickets to a Discovery Class at Adam's Forge for my boyfriend's birthday. Neither of us have tried blacksmithing and I thought it would be super difficult, but it really wasn't! With the expert guidance of the staff, we made two professional-looking BBQ pokers. The class was about 4.5 hours, alternating between working and learning. We're definitely interested in returning, they have lots of options for things you can make, and they have Open Forge sessions where you can come in and work on your craft. There is a small parking area across the street from the forge. And, Ave 26 tacos are right around the corner if you get hungry! read more

We had Adam's Forge come out to our school for an onsite field trip. Our 5th graders loved learning how tools are made and how much effort is put into to the process! They got to see how a forge works, how to be safe with the equipment and were able to touch the tools after they were made! I ended up visiting the forge in conjunction with a work event where we were creating a small knife/letter opener out of a railroad spike. I had only ever seen forging in movies/TV before, and I can't express enough how satisfying it is to make something like this yourself. The mind-blowing part (after the jitters from handling white-hot metal that can melt your face off wear off) was how accessible this skill is, with the right tools and guidance. Aram, our instructor, possesses an amazing amount of patience, kindness, humor, and above all, expertise. I don't believe he had to repeat a single instruction or take over for anyone who participated in the project; everyone succeeded in making their own special piece of art with zero injuries, or even scares. Hot forges. Cold iron. You and a hammer! Adam's Forge teaches blacksmithing classes (and offers a place for people who already have experience to use a forge). You can sign up for their intro class ("Discovery Day/Night") - in fact, you have to - and then you're ready to go with their classes on making knives, steel flowers...almost anything you can imagine. The crowd for the first class I went to was skewed towards slightly geeky dudes, but there was an entire family of six there, too; the second class was more gender-balanced, included a couple teenagers, and even had a 12-year-old kid (and his mom); I'd say anybody who can comfortably hold a hammer can easily do this. It's fun to give it a whirl: even if you never plan on doing it again, hey, at least you can say you have some forging experience. And I have to say, after the intro class, it sounded like every single person there was clamoring to take more, so it wasn't just me who enjoyed it. For that first class, they actually do provide everything - you'll need safety glasses/goggles and earplugs, but if you don't own a pair, you can borrow the (well-used) shop ones. As for other equipment (leather gloves, apron, etc.), for the first class, at least, you do not need those. As you progress and make more complicated things and start to really work closely with the metal, apparently you do. Oh, and one other note: this is a classroom-setup; so it's a series of tables, each with a small (maybe 16 inches by 10 inches) forge on it; so it's super-cool, but don't think you're going to be looking at the sword forge from Conan the Barbarian, here, either. A few other notes: - It's located in a warehouse district, though a relatively nice one. - Apparently this is a relatively new location and incarnation of a group that's been around awhile. read more

I enjoyed the Discovery Day class, and have taken some more. My wife liked the steel rose, and I'm happy with the other projects as well. The instructors range from good to great, and there's plenty of tools for each of the 12 student stations, although the stations are close enough that we have to work around each other at times. For the reviewer complaining about prices, I looked at three other Southern California teaching smithies. They all have a beginners' class of about half a day; their prices were $125, $40, and $10. Adam's Forge isn't the cheapest, but spending $30 more beats driving an extra two hours for me. -------- In the 3 years since I wrote this review, I've taken many more classes, and the forge has upgraded some of its equipment--dual burner propane forges now, and another belt grinder. The instructors remain good to great. The forge uses propane forges. Compared to coal forges, they're cleaner, easier to keep burning well, but are harder to use with some work shapes, and harder to make a localized heat with. The metalworking techniques are mostly the same, so it's not a big deal. With only 12 stations, there's a lot of individual time with the instructor. That's probably the most valuable part of this forge for me. I've also taken classes at another teaching forge, and their 30+ stations mean I'm not learning quite as much. Parking is less than ideal, but has never been a real problem for me. read more

I took the Blacksmithing Discovery class today, after being gifted the sign-up as a birthday present. I liked everything about it! The teacher, Aram, was knowledgeable and warm. He was genuinely happy to be sharing the art of blacksmithing with new people, and it showed. He was patient and helpful, and his demonstrations were clear and concise. The facility itself was well equipped, and I was happy to find that all of the materials needed were available there at no additional charge. My husband and his buddy went up here for an intro to blacksmithing class. They had a really good time. The atmosphere was very friendly and comfortable, the instruction was thorough and helpful. I went recently to the discovery class, and even though I had high hopes and I knew I was gonna love it, it really was probably one of the coolest experiences I've ever had. I had the privilege of having Aram instructing the class that day and he's an excellent teacher, very friendly and patient but also well versed in the ways of blacksmithing. His instruction really puts all the techniques you see on tv and online into perspective of just how challenging yet fulfilling blacksmithing can be. I can't stop talking about this class with my friends and family and highly recommend you take the discovery class if you have any interest in blacksmithing. 10/10 read more

Just took the discovery class yesterday on 11/7/17 and I couldn't be happier that I did. The instructor that I had was Aram and words can't express what an amazing instructor he was.
