The amount of lack of consideration for fellow campers is horrendous. There is no one on site to call to ask for reinforcements of the rules. It's currently midnight and I hear people singing across the park. Our neighbors have finally gone to bed or moved to another campsite. The speed of golf carts and those of little kids driving them is crazy. This is a great place if you want to party but if you are looking for quiet peaceful decompression DON'T come here. You'll be even more stressed out.

As I've gotten older, I have much appreciation for the beauty that is Cat Island. Usually when I go there are people fishing, and others enjoying being out on the water, lounging on boats and even swimming. When there is a hard rain sometimes it can lead to river levels increasing and some flooding and the roads may be impassible to get to Cat Island. I love in some areas how the how the body of water looks like an oasis and an island. There are also beautiful moss trees. This is a nice day trip to adventure to when nature calls.

As 2014 draws to a close I've decided to write one final review before starting the year fresh. I…read morewanted something special, but not so sentimental I lose my target audience. Sherbune fits the bill so here we go. The Sherbune Wildlife Management Area is located along I-10 between Batin Rouge and Lafayette. I'm sure there are other towns in between those cities, but I just ignore them for the most part. Sherbune is similar to other state WMAs in that it has miles of dirt roads and a shooting range, but it has some special things as well. The first has to do with the roads. The road that leads from 190 to I-10 is a neat one. It's paved the entire way, but has nice dirt roads branching off. The dirt roads lead thought the WMA and will allow even regular vehicles to leave the beaten path and explore the middle of nowhere. The main road has neat views of the levee along the Atchafalaya Basin and the woods, but the dirt roads are where it's at. Another unique feature of this WMA is the restroom facilities. The bathrooms are good, old fashioned latrines. if you've never used a latrine, it isn't for the faint of heart. Imagine a toilet placed over a giant hole in the ground with no ability to flush. If you're feeling brave, shine a flashlight down the hole. Some things cannot be unseen. Sherbune also offers camping. The area along the basin levee is open to campers as is a more modern camping area near the rifle range. So now that I've mentioned some of the unique stuff, I'll tell you my experience. Sometimes I find myself frustrated with the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The city is great, but after weeks in the concrete jungle, I need to decompress. Sherbune fits that bill perfectly and helped me forget the every day stressors and focus on nature, life and what's truly important. I realize that sounds very hippy dippy, but give it a try one day. I bet you'll like it. Lagniappe: if you make the trek through Sherbune there's one more thing you should see. Under I-10 near the boat launch there is a dirt road that runs under the basin bridge. You will probably need four wheel drive if it's muddy, but that's where you'll find a waterfall in the swamp. Not many people know about it, but it's definitely a site to behold. I happened to catch this on a drive home in early October where I stopped for a quick walk…read more The lakes here are the real main attraction with a long walking/running trail circulating the waters. Add the mixture of trees, bushes, and docks, and you have yourself a very nice scenic elegant park. For activities, there's people fishing and kayaking here and walking their dogs. It's pretty close to the LSU campus; it's obvious the student body and school staff enjoy this park as well!
