Tamra is extremely knowledgeable regarding myriad services for children and adults and is an amazing asset to families and our community. I am a single mother of 4 here in Wake County and 2 of my children are severely autistic with other differences including sensory processing issues and pica. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Tamra when she was assigned as my child's case manager during her tenure at the CDSA (Children's Developmental Services Agency). Tamra helped me with services for my child and also gave me a lot of advice for my other child that was already in the school system with an IEP. Tamra can help with guidance during IEP meetings and advocate for your child and I can tell you from my personal experience, she will treat your child/children as if they were her own. Tamra was even attentive and answered questions for my 2 children that don't have special needs, but were learning along with me. Tamra is very professional, attentive, determined and I promise you, you would not regret having her help you navigate the complex world of disabilty services, the school system and acquiring other services. I was extremely overwhelmed when we first met because both of my children had just been diagnosed, but Tamra took us under her wing and made me feel so much more confident and comfortable with the processes. My children love Tamra and her family....it was funny because when she started working with us we found out she literally lived in the same subdivision. Tamra's family has become framily (friends that are pretty much family).....because when people go above and beyond and do so much for your family.....they often become just like family and you develop a deep connection and respect. I am so proud of Tamra for making this leap into consulting and starting her own business and I am also so extremely thankful that our community has her. You would not regret having her help you and your family......she's top notch in every way.

I knew more about the TEACHH method, Pivotal Response Training, and basic Applied Behavioral Analysis than the staff. How "a school for children with autism" can run without a qualified director/leader is beyond me. I understand they do have a Board Certified Behavioral Analyst but this begs the question: why isn't the facility in better shape? I have heard he/she is a bully and brings their problems to work with them. What a shame for parents trying to seek help for their children.

My husband and I took a tour of the school and it seemed like there were a lot of activities and resources for the kids despite the building having an industrial feel and looking a bit run down. We decided to apply despite the hundreds of dollars in application fees just to review our paperwork. At the time, we did not realize most ABA places do not do that. They said the typical time from application to start date was usually a few weeks, but ours took 2 months because they had trouble certifying one of their providers with my insurance company. That was understandable, but it's what happened in the meantime that made me rethink the school. It was difficult to get anyone to answer the phone, and most of my messages were never returned. Messages I left with various people were never passed on to the right ones. Nobody knew what was going on and in some cases they didn't even know who to ask. All the while, my insurance company insisted the problem was on the school's end and that they were having consistent trouble getting in touch with them and that the school filed paperwork wrong three times. It gave me the impression of a school whose management is in chaos and disarray. Finally, after all that was sorted out and just days before my daughters were supposed to start, they suddenly sprung us with $5,000 in further application fees and said they required a 1-year contract. None of this had ever been mentioned in person, on the phone, or in the paperwork we signed at any point in the preceding two months. It raised a lot of red flags to be asked to spend a small fortune in unexpected hidden fees and be required to commit to a long-term contract before my girls had even started. Maybe the school is struggling financially and is desperate to extract as much money in fees as possible? I have no idea. I just know no other ABA place has such insanely high hidden fees. Because my kids never had a chance to get therapy here, I really can't speak to the quality of care. All I know is that getting quality care is much more difficult when management is very disorganized.

After touring the school we were extremely impressed with the class size, the curriculum and the structure we saw. We visited in March or April of 2015. Because we were impressed we immediately wanted to get her enrolled for the upcoming school year which began in September. At the time of our tour their 4yrold class was full and we would have to be placed on wait list. We were told our daughter was next on the list. There was a parent who was having a difficult time she had two kids enrolled but struggling to find work and didn't know if she would be able to afford the tuition for the up upcoming year. Basically the picture painted was that our daughter had an extremely good chance to make the full time list. We paid the registration fee and gave them a check to hold for first months tuition as there was an opening for part time Tues/Thurs. We then placed our daughter in daycare. Our intent was to pull her from daycare once the school year started. Remember all of this was in March/April. My husband and I called several times over the course of the summer to check the status of the wait list. The first time I called I was told that our daughter went from being next on the list to now having 2 people ahead of her. I was immediately taken aback and upset. Because this was a verbal conversation it was my word against theirs. I should have used my better judgment at that point and just asked for a refund of tuition. But I was told to just hang tight. Something could still open up. Part of their "policy" is in order to receive a refund of tuition you must call and ask that they shred your check by July 15. The school year doesn't begin until the Monday following Labor Day. So as I'm calling BEFORE July 15 they still have me hanging on to hopes that our child will get a spot. My issue is the time frames they place before you...the lack of contact on their part during this "waiting period". Existing parents are to give 2weeks notice regarding their re-enrollment for the school year. See the disparity? At the very least when the July 15 deadline approaches they should contact parents on their waiting list to discuss the status and objectives. The only time they reached out to me is via mail a week before open house which took place on Sept 2 or 3rd. When I got the letter I tried calling the school but no one was available to take my call so I emailed them to let them know my daughter wouldn't be attending the school part time. I wanted to include the email exchange, however Yelp advised me that I could not because is includes personal information. The owner (who this exchange took place with) provides her photo, name and email address all over their website. The email exchange is what prompted me to even write the review. The tone, the dismissiveness, the lack of professionalism, the fact that a spot mysteriously opens up once I complain and ask for a refund is all suspect. I want people to see for themselves the kind of administration that runs this school BEFORE you think of enrolling your child. Here's the thing no matter what I feel or complain about the administration should remain professional. The owner would have you believe this is about my child not getting a spot, but this is about a lack of professionalism. After scrambling and by the grace of God, we were able to pull my daughter from daycare and enroll her full time at another private school. She started late but nonetheless she's in. The owner would also have you think that this review is being posted from a place of maliciousness and truly it's not. It's not even about the refund. I asked for one they declined and that for me could have and would have been the end of it. However when I shared my disappointment with the process and the owner took it upon herself to dangle a spot that magically opened up (AFTER MY COMPLAINT) in front of me and then goes on to insinuate that my child doesn't belong at her school BECAUSE she felt some type of way about my email and complaints...this is why I'm posting this review. It's beyond unprofessional, in fact it's down right insulting. **UPDATE The owner decided to comment on my review, you can see just how "professional" she is. She's calling me a liar, did I once call her names?! No I only stated my opinion regarding her tone and lack of professionalism. She begins calling me a liar about an email. If she had READ my review I said MAIL not email. Not once did I say anything about open house and email, so I'm not lying. Anyone interested in the email exchange that Yelp refused to allow me to post I will be more than happy to forward along. I'm actually happy that she responded you can see for yourself just how less than professional she is. Notice how she comments on reviews. People are entitled to share THEIR experience!! BEWARE*

My boys weren't very happy there and, although the center was amazing, the classrooms seemed overcrowded compared to what we were told the ratio would be. My autistic son has an aide who remains in the classroom with him and she reported to me that sometimes the room would be stuffed with children beyond the official capacity. We received a lot of behavior reports concerning my other son and, again, my aide reported that the classroom spent way too much time sitting at the table instead of letting the kids move around the classroom. The time spent outside was minimal, even though they had very beautiful playgrounds. I've spoken to several early childhood education experts who say that in this age range (under 5), you should look for centers that have more open play space than tables. You should also look for places that are less academically focused, since what's most important for kids this age isn't in memorizing facts, but learning how to get along with others, developing self-sufficiency, and enjoying the process of learning. Earthshine's Center isn't the prettiest of places, but don't let that fool you. My boys both absolutely love it and my one son's 'behavior problems' completely disappeared when we switched schools. My boys were never really happy to separate in the old school, but after about a week at Earthshine, they were eager to bound away from me. I think the format of Montessori - where the child leaves the parent instead of the parent leaving the child - helps tremendously. The best thing about Earthshine is that, if the weather is good, they are outside. Playing, eating, learning, is all done in a space that's big enough for the kids to really run around and burn off their energy (which makes bedtime easier for me). Inside the classrooms, the tables take up a smaller portion than any other center we toured. Children are encouraged in self-directed learning, but unlike many other Montessori centers, this one isn't as hands off as some are, which can cause some children problems in that they aren't given ANY direction. When we were considering this school, my son's behavior therapist warned us that Montessori schools can be either really good or really bad. The really bad ones basically have no structure and, while some children are motivated and interested enough in learning to complete their basic education on their own - many, if not most children, are not. This school is one of the really good ones. There's enough structure that my boys know their general plan for the day (lunch and nap happen in the same order), but enough flexibility to keep learning fun. Like any good Montessori school, they have 'observation stations' where you can watch your kids through a one-way mirror and observe them in the classroom. I see my boys select a playmat and toys, play with the toys on the mat, and then clean it up themselves. They've become much more independent since starting the school. Their special needs knowledge and accommodations are top notch and the best I've found. My autistic son has really benefited from attending. There are many schools that turn down an aide. We toured a lot of places and many refused to let my son's therapists in the classroom. To me, this is suspicious at the 2-5 year old age. A aide is trained to help the child inside their environment and it isn't like the other children will be distracted by another adult, who they see as just another teacher. It speaks volumes for the transparency of Earthshine that they allow aides provided they meet the state requirements with detailed background checks. We are moving soon and I'm going to miss Earthshine. I'm sure my boys will too.

So I have been sending the little clones to this school for the past 4 years now. Just like any…read moreschool, it has it's ups, and it's downs. The normal school day runs from 9:15 AM to 3:45 PM. They have a before school program, but not an after school program, so your kids MUST be picked up for 4:00 PM. And if you call after 4:00 PM, unless you have somebody's mobile phone, or direct line, the front desk will not answer the phone. The do serve what they consider "a nutritional" lunch. But I say, it is only nutritional IF AND ONLY IF two things happen. 1) You don't burn or over cook it. Then all the nutritional value is gone. 2) If the kids eat it. If it is burnt, or dried up like a brick, then the kids will not eat it. If it taste like, hmm, in the words of my 7 years old, the food sucks, then the kids will not eat it. Here is a true story, I went to have lunch with my kids at school, when I got there for the first one, he was eating a salad. Now, this kids loves his veggie tables more than most kids, but he is also a T-Rex with his carnivorous appetite. I did think it was kinda strange, but I didn't realize till I was having lunch with the next one. I actually went through the line with him, and he just chooses the safe option everyday, and eats a PB&J. I could not even recognize some of the food. But if you really want to know how good the food is, check out the staff, and see how many of them eat it. I would say about 95% of them bring their lunch. Now that makes you ask, if it is so healthy and nutritious, why don't the people who work their eat it? But I have to admit, the school food is better than it was there two years ago, so I will give them that. As far as electives, since Hunter is a AG/GT Magnet School of Distinction and has won awards, they do have a nice variety of elective programs. Some of the teachers are the nicest people you will meet in the world. The music teacher, Mrs. Taylor, is not just a music teacher, but actually plays in orchestra and symphony concerts, so you know she is good. She is also super nice, and whenever she has extra concert tickets, she shares them with her students families. The school likes to invite authors, poets, dancers, musicians, you know real famous people to the school and have them talk to the kids One of the authors was the writer of "Where the Wild Things Are." The school does try and have a good curriculum. They recently started a "Walkers Club" for those that get there early in the morning. You can do a few laps around the track, and earn points. You know kids, they love points. Not sure what they get at the end, but they still love points. So, in the end, if you want to know more about Hunter Elementary, take a tour. While you are there, if you see some parents around ask them. And for the new orientation, when I attended, they handed out what I call a "Kidnap me" directory. That a book with the name, address, e-mail and phone number of all the kids that go to the school. You can opt to have some of the information removed from the directory at the beginning of the year, but you better catch them before they publish it. But come on, who just hands that information out to total strangers the first time you meet them. Be a little bit more secure with that info. That is why I wanted only wanted their name, my name, and the phone number listed. Everybody, their momma, and their daddy don't need to know where I live. Not that I have anything to hide, but do you want a book floating around that could fall into the wrong hands with everybody's info in it? Did I go off topic, sorry. Just my personal thoughts. But go check out Hunter, they are a decent school for the most part.

The teachers have been wonderful about letting my child check out things he's interested in and develop his own interests and opinions. He's gotten to try writing fairy tales, learning about sea life, and art club. He is in love with the chess club most of all - Coach Indermaur is awesome and so dedicated! The school just feels like it's brimming with possibilities. The teachers and leadership go very far out of their way to make sure they're not leaving kids behind due to special needs, poverty, or even behavioral issues. The communication from the school, PTA, teacher, and principal has been beyond impressive. The involvement and volunteerism from the parents truly blows me away. Most of the volunteers have jobs (like I do) but build in time where we can to be a part of what this school is doing. Every time I leave the building, I realize I've been smiling the whole time I've been there. The added focus on early AIG-related teaching has been wonderful. I truly don't see how other schools manage it when they can't identify or give additional enrichment to AIG kids before 4th grade. An intellectually gifted kid in a regular class is a teacher's nightmare. People think "intellectually gifted" means the kid who sits up front and knows all the answers and reads all the time. It's often the kid who won't quiet down, the one who is obstinate toward the teacher, or the one who interrupts the other kids. More difficult work and added academic challenges are an important part of the solution there, and other schools don't provide much support there. Hunter has teachers and a principal who "get it" when it comes to this, and they're willing to work with you and your child to allow them to become their best version of themselves through work, practice, support, and structure. Every teacher I've worked with thus far seems genuinely happy to be at the school, and my son's teacher has been a standout star in an already very bright field of stars. Just seeing the difference in my kid's knowledge, writing, reading, and attitude in the past 3 semesters is proof positive that she is an expert at her very difficult job. I cannot say enough good things about the school. Love, love, love Hunter!
