I decided to treat myself since I've been displaced due to the Fort McMurray fires- I had a hair appointment booked the day we got evacuated- with a stylist I've been seeing for 12 years. Sadly that did not happen. Since I could not connect with her here I searched online and yelp for a place that could do something fun and had a great atmosphere. Adara is it folks! They have a great staff and vibe. It was recommended that I see Denise because I wanted to get some fun colours done (suggested by the gentleman who answers the phones, if I'm not mistaken he also makes a great cup of tea). Well, Denise is such a peach! She was friendly and informative right from the get go on top of being extraordinarily talented. I got exactly what I asked for! My colours were fushia, copper, violet and red underlights keeping my natural hair on top. She was really understanding when I got a phone call from a study I'm participating in- right when she needed to get the dye out of my hair. And also my SO coming in twice to check with our one month old (to see if we could pause so I could feed him). And after she trimmed my hair- I wanted to keep the length- and thinned out my over grown bangs she put only a light gel in my hair and some heat protectant spray. All of the products from the shampoo and conditioner to the heat spray smelt wonderful and the scents were easily identifiable. The products have a good enough die down that if you're sensitive, have a strong sense of smell or have sensitive people around you it won't be too offensive later. I might return to purchase a few of them because they really are lovely and my hair feels nice even after my restless sleeping habits... I mentioned the atmosphere before but it really was fantastic- the music was a playlist and was a genuinely pleasant mix- nothing too hard or exceedingly poppy. Also there was construction happening on the building which I hardly noticed. I did hear the front desk guy phoning people and warning them about that too- that's a business that's concerned with their customers relaxation! I would go to Adara again (if I'm in Edmonton) because it was an extremely good experience. read more

I used to get my hair cut here years ago and was always quite pleased, but my first stylist moved out of town, so I got another stylist and he was awesome, he then moved and I followed him, for a time. It's now been ages since I had my hair cut, I shopped around and even cut it myself a few times (not great, but not hoooorrible!). Today I had an appointment with Brooklyn. She was amazing. Fun, vibrant, and I honestly don't even know what she did. I closed my eyes to drab sad heavy hair and opened them to fluffy bouncy curls. I went from a 6 to a 10 in her care. Added bonus is the head massage when they wash your hair. Not every stylist is even able to wash hair and have me relax, but the massage erased a fully stressful day that preceded it. Everyone in the studio was eye smiling and seemed to be having a good time, definitely a nice energy to be apart of. read more

I've been to Adara twice and saw the owner Shannon for my hair cut. She was fantastic and gave my hair a great cut that lasts since I am growing out my hair. Plus I get a free bang trim in between hair cuts. Unlike most hairdressers, she told me that my hair does not need color or hair cuts so often since my hair is healthy and my color in style. She is truthful and doesn't try to sell me services and products which I like. This is a nice change from other hair salons and makes my hair appt relaxing and enjoyable. I was so happy and impressed with Adara that I sent my bf to see Ricky since she is trained in men's hair. My bf said that he would never see another hair dresser again! The $30 for a men's cut was definetly reasonable since my bf didn't want a buzz cut- he wanted a clean cut but something that would hide his thining, receeding hair line. Ricky did a wonderful job and his hair is cut and styled perfectly to hide his hair problems. The salon itself is simple, clean lines, and clean- which is key! Today I went to Adara for the very first time and got both a cut and full foils. I was paired with a stylist named Beth, who was not only very professional but knowledgable and kind. She instantly made me feel relaxed, and the entire 3 hours went by faster than the blink of an eye! The interior of the building is beautiful - simplistic blacks and neutral walls, with a minimalist, but clean, layout. It definitely added to the relaxed, professional vibe of the salon. All of the stylists were upbeat, positive, and very chatty and friendly with their clients. Another great thing about my appointment was that I was booked for a cut and color at 4pm, and I was actually in the chair and getting my foils put in AT 4pm. Punctuality on the part of the salon and the stylists is very important to me - and, I assume, many other people, since we all lead quite busy lives, and sitting around in a salon waiting half an hour for your appointment to actually begin is annoying. I have to say that I was nervous about trying out a new hairdresser, since I had been seeing the same one for over 15 years prior to moving to Edmonton, but Beth (and the salon) were so utterly amazing that I will never be going to another salon again! She took extra time to ensure that every hair was cut at the exact right length, and that every follicle was cleaned, massaged, and treated with care. She listened attentively to what I wanted to have done, and followed it to a T - at no point was I worried that my new 'do wouldn't turn out the way I had envisioned. I am thrilled with her work and the salon as a whole. Extra bonuses: the salon uses, and sells, (almost) exclusively Bumble & Bumble products at great prices. In addition, my entire bill was only $190 - this included my cut, foils, AND products. Very, very reasonable, considering I was pampered for 3 hours! So happy to now have a stellar hairdresser! I solely go to the salon for a basic haircut with Kendra who is lovely. We have some great chats while eavesdropping on other conversations. She definitely listens to what I want and provides feedback. I have tried out a few different hairstyles and all have been fab. Pricing for haircuts is by the length. There is some information on their website, but usually my haircut price is the same. There is a range for pricing, so I never know exactly what it will be (ask ahead!) They do include a free trim (within 3 weeks) with a haircut which is a bonus. The salon itself is very clean and open. Adara Hair and Body Studio is a wonderful salon, for many reasons! Let me count the ways: 1) I have very curly hair, which means I have a long history of lopsided poodle haircuts. Since coming to Jen, I consistently have great haircuts. Jen always listens to what I am requesting and respects my fear of cutting off too much hair (it takes so long to show length with curls!) and provides me with a wonderful curly-haired haircut. Jen also provides solid guidance when I come in asking for something that isn't in line with my hair goals (like the time I wanted hair like Ilana from Broad City but also have spent the last several years trying to grow it long...) It took me a long time to find the perfect stylist and I have found her in Jen. 2) My hair is naturally blonde, but Jen skillfully dyes my hair red. I am complimented constantly on the beauty of my colour (at work by colleagues and clients, in the grocery store, at the market, on the street - everywhere!) I should probably say "yes it IS natural!" when people ask, but I don't. I tell them that yes, money can buy this colour and they should go see Jen and her team at Adara! 3) Adara is an inviting salon, with friendly and professional staff. Sometimes I feel like Jen is doing double-duty as my therapist as well as hair stylist! She's very easy to talk to and I appreciate that. I also feel special every time I walk in when Reid or Hanna greet me by name, or when Martin says hello from his chair by the seating area. I feel like a friend, not just a customer. 4) Adara has gender-neutral pricing! Pricing for haircuts should be based on length of hair, but most salons base pricing on the gender of the customer, not hair length. Did you know that Adara was the first salon in Edmonton to introduce gender-neutral pricing? They charge for the time it takes to cut the hair, not the gender of the person with the hair. Adara is an inclusive space for all individuals along the gender spectrum, and this is reflected in their pricing based on hair length. 5) Adara is locally owned and operated! By supporting Adara, you are supporting a local business in the Edmonton community. 6) Adara gives back to the community! The team at Adara regularly participate in community events to benefit support agencies and vulnerable individuals. Some of these events include a cut-a-thon where the team volunteer for the day giving haircuts and all the donations go to Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS). The team recently spent the day at the Pride Centre offering styling classes for transgendered individuals, as well as free haircuts for LGBTQ+ youth. They also took down lots of clothing donations for LGBTQ+ youth to wear for graduation. These are just a sprinkling of the regular community events that the Adara team participate in. I had a consult from one of their new apprentice's Martin. Such a genuine guy, and a sweetheart to work with. He let me know the approximate cost it would be to get my medium hued hair to a nice golden baylage, and a trim (He quoted me over $100 less than another salon I looked into! Plus, the cost was even cheaper than what he quoted me at!!!). I booked to come see him a week later. I am so impressed with the time and effort that Martin put into doing my hair. The colour is gorgeous and holding up really well. I am trying to grow my hair out from having a massive undercut (I used to have nice long thick hair) so Martin cleaned up my ends, and left it alone to grow. The vibe in Adara is modern and chic, and super inviting. All the staff members there are hip and fun, and they do lots of training courses as well. I highly recommend Martin for your hair needs! This salon is close to where I live, so I thought I would give it a try. First, the salon is very dirty. It needs a serious deep cleaning. It looks somewhat clean at first glance, but take a look at your stylist's stations, the floors and baseboards. Or the thick layer of dust EVERYWHERE. With three stylists gossiping at the front desk, it's not like they are too busy to clean... Booking is a challenge, as the receptionists will put you on hold and disconnect several times; this is likely due to the very high turnover of teen receptionists. I had a few services with Archie, the aesthetician. She is well trained, mature and experienced. If she worked at a cleaner place and had a quiet room instead of small, crowded, loud room next to the stations, I would go to her regularly. Her services are excellent, but I don't feel safe getting facials and waxing in a dirty space. Further, facials aren't relaxing, however good they are, when all you hear is stylists yelling across the salon and bad pop music blares.. I've had two bad haircuts here. They were not only overpriced (and my usual spot is Ricci Hair Co., so I'm not adverse to high prices), but they charge a "hair recycling fee" on top of the cut. Even for bang trims... The music is loud, the sofas worn, the atmosphere that of a Supercuts (but dirtier). read more

I cant remember when I started going to Adara but it has been a few years now, Im not the type of person to get my hair cut very often but every time I go it is always an amazingly relaxed time. I prefer Victoria because she is very friendly, knows how to give an amazing hair cut AND she massages your scalp during your shampoo! Worst haircut I have gotten in my 43 years. I can not remember her name but she was Asian. I had even showed her a picture and she came no where close to it. I had to go to another salon to get my hair fixed which was of some help as this girl had cut it so bad that it simply needs to grow out. The manager was ok in being apologetic, didn't feel she was genuine, but for real you need to hire actual people that can cut hair. DON'T have your hair done by Denise ! Walked in with long hair didn't want it any shorter than collar length, showed picture of style I wanted with plenty of discussion around it. Ended up looking like a scarecrow: hair uneven all different lengths with in the same area, huge clump of length at front which looks rediculous, one side cut at ear length other side about an inch longer, not part of the style requested. The style should have been at least 3-4 inches long she cut it so short I can't use curling tong or a straightener!!!!! Would not advise using here. The advisory before you write the review suggest that I not write a review if I am connected to the owners or employees in any way, but that is exactly how they make you feel upon arrival: like you're just a friend in for a visit. I've been going for years now, and I will not trust another salon with my hair. Their communication is excellent. I've never received a botched styling. Best place to get your hair done. I've been going to see Sarah for 4 years now and will never let anyone else touch my hair. Super relaxed and friendly environment. All the staff is amazing and is always friendly even if you're not their client. Sells Bumble and Bumble right in the salon so you don't have to drive to all ends of the city to find it. I always receive great service from Sarah, and I have never gone home from an appointment and cried because I hated my hair (it's happened to us all). She takes the time to really talk about what kind of cut/look you're after and will tell you exactly what she plans on doing so you know what to expect. I can literally now just show up, sit in the chair and say "do whatever...you know what I like" and it turns out perfect. I turn up on the day excited to get my hair done only to be told there is no apt for me and that the date had never been changed. So disappointed, this caused me alot of inconvenience. This place did streaks for me over the summer. She did not listen to me and I ended up with wide streaks all over the head, instead of a few highlights here and there. Needless to say, it dried my hair out completely. Along with a 120 dollar price tag for the streaks, they do NOT offer a free haircut with it, as many a salon will do. Its an EXTRA 52 dollars just for a cut!! which I refuse to pay. I later went and had another salon cut it for 1/2 the price. I called there today, to see how much my block color would cost, they said depended on the color and what color youre going to??? Sounds just like a SCAM. Last time I went there, at least I got the price before I agreed to services. The guy on the phone asked wheterh i wanted to come in for the haircut only, i said: NO. I never pay more than 40 dollars for a cut. MY hair is long, and one length, I only get a trim on the edges.. not worth 52 dollars. Dont go to this salon, unless you want to Throw your money away!!! read more
