"So You Fancy, huh?" Uh.... ya I am! At least I sure felt that way when I went to The Cutting Room to get a Kerastase hair treatment that helps put a little extra volume and oomph to "skinny" hair. The salon is nice, it's in an old house located behind the Planet Organic off Jasper Ave. They have their own parking lot that is free to park in (which gets major bonus points when you're talking downtown salons). The staff all seemed very nice, attentive to their clients and quite good stylists. I had the pleasure of being styled up by Jason - I highly suggest asking for him! Besides making my hair look fabulous, as he styled it he told me tips and tricks for doing my hair at home. Things I had no idea about but are so simple! And the mark of a really great hair-do: The curls still looked great the next day! Thank You Jason!! As I didn't get a cut/colour done I thought I would give them 4stars, hence room to grow as I try them out again! And ya, I will be back. read more

Danielle was my hairstylist. I haven't had a haircut in several years and my hair was looking really long and dry at the ends. I was initially wanting to cut my waist length hair to just past shoulder length but Dani recommended that we just cut about 6-7 inches off. She knew that because my hair type is very fine, tends to frizz and I've got a lot of it, if my hair was cut any shorter it won't look flattering on me because of the blunt cut that I'm requesting. She's right because it ended up being the perfect length for me and I'm glad I went with her recommendation. My hair is still long but all the dry ends are gone and my hair looks so healthy now! I'm super happy with her work! Highly recommend her and I've always had a great experience with Cutting Room. read more

The Cutting Room has a beautiful selection of products which I why I decided to check them out. I've never had my hair done there but I have gone there twice for products, once being today. On both occasions it was the same person working behind the counter and she was unfriendly and rude. She doesn't ask if she can help or say thank you and seems generally annoyed by having to answer questions or take a payment. She made me feel very unwelcome both times. Came in for an early cut & color appointment and was greeted by 2 sweet dogs I knew then it was gonna be a good day. All staff were friendly and accomodating. I was served coffee by Dereck. I've never been happier on how my hair turned out, i finally found my stylist that i can be loyal to, Emily :) She is very cheerful and informative, she gave me so much tips on how to deal w coarse, damaged hair. Ok, so. I've had my hair cut and coloured at The Cutting Room two times, spanning a large amount of time (since before they moved locations to today). They are great with cuts. They are great with colouring. Their staff are friendly. The reason for the one-star review is: DO NOT get your formal hair done here. Up, down, styled in any way for any important occasion. Don't do it. I remember having my grad hair done here and I wasn't over the moon with it, but I had since chalked that up to being a picky teenager. Now, I'm in my late-twenties, and my best friend got married and chose this salon for her, her bridesmaids, and the mother of the bride to get their hair done the morning of the wedding. *******Every. single. hairdo. had to be redone in a HUGE HURRY on the morning of her wedding as soon as we got home.******* Thank goodness one of the family members was a hairstylist. The bride's hair was done by a senior stylist at The Cutting Room, and the 'do was not even close to what she asked for. The trial was a disaster too, but he swore it'd look exactly right on the day of. By the time we got back to the house, huge bobby pins were already falling out (which is awful by any standard, let alone bridal hair that needs to last all day) and it had to be completely taken down and redone. Every single bridesmaid save for maybe one was really unhappy and had to have their curls redone. My hair had so much product in it and had been so heat treated that I had limp spaghetti on my head with no volume. And my natural hair is really, really curly! I don't want to say anything bad about the people working here themselves because truthfully, they seem really wonderful. But while I'd recommend this place for a smile, a nice cut, and a colour, it is not the place for getting your hair done for an important occasion. I know how important these days are to some people, and the last thing anyone deserves is to not feel good about themselves on a really happy day. read more

My first time at this new location, and I will totally be back! Free parking and a great location. The inside of the salon is very cool too, love the vibe. I got the Kerastase Discipline Protocol Treatment a couple of days ago, I highly recommend this treatment, I have curly hair and it's been a bit frizzy since getting it coloured at a different salon, this treatment has totally smoothed my hair and my curls look amazing. Anyways, Maraquitta was my stylist and I think she's pretty great. When I'm due for another colouring, I will go back to her for sure. I was sure to ask for a quote before I left and the price was very fair. read more

Oh wow, I didn't realize I hadn't written a review of The Cutting Room - I've been a very happy client for years, going back to their 124th street location. Having been there so often of course some cuts and colours have been better than others. In fact while very well executed I absolutely hated the first haircut I got there. BUT. All I had to do was indicate that I'd requested something different and it was immediately re-cut beautifully, despite the fact that they were incredibly busy. That, as much as anything, is why I went back. On another occasion I was given a color very different than what I'd shown the stylist I'd wanted. She listened respectfully while I pointed out the difference then consulted the owner John (who is worth the wait to book with if you can plan that far ahead!), who without any further discussion simply instructed the stylist what to do to achieve the right color and it was immediately corrected. I got so many compliments on that colour I kept it up for years. There will always be miscommunications, mis-matches between stylists and clients, etc - hairdressing is more art than science. The difference maker is whether a salon will work with you until you are happy, and The Cutting Room has always unfailingly done so. And at least one of those five stars is for the front end staff, who always do an amazing job of making clients feel welcome. Oh and one for Gus, too! read more

I have been coming to the Cutting Room for years now and I am never disappointed. Upon arrival, someone will take your jacket, check you in for your appointment and offer you a beverage (water, tea, coffee). I've seen numerous hair stylists throughout the years and have been very happy with all of them. Each stylist is knowledgeable on haircare and maintenance and is ready to answer any questions you may have. I will admit that I am bad at maintaining a regular frequency for hair cuts but my hair ALWAYS feels so healthy when I leave. I also got my hair colored earlier this year and the stylist was amazing. I wasn't sure if I loved the color against my skin tone and was worried I made a mistake in choosing that specific color. However, the stylist said I should go home and monitor over the week and if I wasn't happy, I could come back and she would change it for me- free of charge!! I ended up LOVING my hair color after I washed it a couple times so I didn't even have to go back. Would definitely recommend to everyone! read more
