There are two sides of UMass University Campus. The best part is the hospital itself, the worst by…read morefar is the ER and event that is divided. Here is what I mean. The doctors and especially the nurses I have dealt with through several surgeries and illnesses have been top notch and caring. No complaints and I have total trust in them especially in cardiology, neurology, vascular and diabetes care. They get five stars. The care in the ER, again especially from the nurses, is exceptional. Friendly and caring. They too get five stars. The problem is that when you need emergency care you first need to get triaged, this is what is so destructive to the UMass reputation. The people who staff the emergency check in are easily flustered and if you approach to ask why you have been sitting in the waiting room for 12 hours (my longest wait was 14 hours) they can be a bit cold, bordering on rude. You can get to triage without too much of a problem, just depends on how many people are in front of you. But the check in lacks a certain level of basic competence. I went to the ER with a stroke. The check in person had me sit with everyone else in the waiting room. After about 15-20 minutes a nurse came out to get me and realized I was having a stroke, from That point on they were awesome. Tonight I came here with a history of blood clots and apparently more were developing. I arrived here at 9pm. Quickly got into triage and again had two great nurses. I was told that because of my history of stroke and heart failure I would be put onto a priority list. It is now 5:00am and not a peep from anyone. The waiting room is almost empty. The person at check in was MIA. The security guards could not have been any more rude. In a nasty tone they told me to just wait for the nurse. They will not even look me in the eye, they look past you. This is the most unprofessional setting and 180 degrees from the rest of the facility. By the way, they came through to clean the waiting room once, they waited so long to clean that there was blood on the floor, bloody gauze, trash... it is just disgusting. Clearly the leadership team doesn't read any of the reviews here nor do they actually spend time in the ER, if they did they might just do something about it. No one is holding the leadership of the ER accountable, that is the problem. I have been a senior leader in HR for many years, I can fix this problem within weeks and start to change the culture and attitude of this ER operation. Follow up at 8:00am - I am finally in a room in the ER and it is 180 degrees from the experience of the check in and waiting area. Excellent doctors and nurses. Very caring and very nice to be around. So odd!

I must add that the coordination couldn't have gone better. They arranged a bed for her in the CCU and the Dr who would be doing her surgery spent time with me over the phone explaining what needed to be done & how it will work. From the time we boarded the ambulance to the recovery room I highly doubt it could have gone any smoother. She came out of the surgery, then recovery, and was immediately taken to the CCU. The poor sweetheart had lines upon lines, oxygen, etc. And when she woke, clearly upset. The nurse ( Karen) that is assigned to her has been so very kind, compassionate, and highly skilled. All the other caretakers have been wonderful. It's been 3 days and she's still in the CCU. But she's doing quite well, healing nicely with the excellent care she is getting. What started out as a frightening experience turned out to be a very positive one & I can't thank them enough.

Alexander was very dismissive when we let him know that we were upset for waiting nine hours for a 10 second conversation. literally waited 2 1/2 hours for him to come down and say you're all set. This is something he could've said to the registered nurse and she could've told us 2 1/2 hours previously. There is a huge amount of time, wasted on basically lack of communication . when we were ready to check out at 4 AM, the nurse that we were trying to get to check us out said she had other priorities and to be honest it seemed like she was creating things to do so she didn't have to take care of us right away. Her name tag was also conveniently flipped as she was giving us a very slightly snarky attitude. I understand an emergency room is an emergency room as we were reminded multiple times basically to tell us we shouldn't feel the way that we do. But at the end of the day you're still charging insurance and co-pays so you're still making money. There should still be some sort of customer service. in any situation, if given a choice. I would not choose umass

Given no other choice I would go here only for a life-threatening emergency in the future…read more This place has dysfunctional operations. First, you have to pay for parking. I thought it was a non-profit group supported by taxpayers. So you pay twice for a single service. Walking in I overheard staff members openly complaining about the poor health care they were personally receiving in the very place they work. Strange? To be fair, there has to be some competent staff working here. Next, I went for a pulmonary test that had me walking fast in the hallway holding a small test machine. I was almost run down by a host of reckless charging aides moving about 20 empty stretchers (without patients on them) at a ridiculous speed only to park them in the hallway I was taking a test in. They burst through double doors carelessly and aggressively. It was if they could care less if they just mowed me down. I literally had to dodge-and-weave their aggressiveness while I was a patient taking a test. The technician that was giving me the test complained loudly to them. She told them "you know I use this hall for these tests." Aides moving empty stretchers were completely indifferent to her and me. Aides acted like bully-boy brats on a mission with no care for anyone else, let alone a patient taking a test. I felt an "every man for themselves" jaded work attitude in many areas of the building. Seemed to be a work culture of self-centered staff. I thought hospitals were about love? About six months later I get a personal bill for the services that were supposed to be paid by my insurance. Can you imagine any small business surviving with such slow billing practices? To be brief, the billing department had some untrained people. Eventually one person fixed the problem in just a few minutes. But the earlier billing associates created barrier after barrier preventing resolution. They made me waste about three hours of my time to straighten up a mess they created. I asked for a Supervisor. They said there was none available. I left a message. No call back that day, next morning or next afternoon. But, what's the chances the same Supervisor calls me back minutes just after my call to their patient advocate group the next day. Supervisor tells me that "I was in a meeting yesterday and was just about to call you" Yeah... Right... Please!!!! Post it in the lame excuse booklet. So, how many cars could an auto dealer sell if they had all their staff in meetings? How could any small business not die a quick death from lack of sales due to poorly trained staff and indifferent Supervisors? Oh I forgot, we aren't a customer but merely a "patient". What is this 1950's crap attitude all about anyway? And no, you don't have to be held over the barrel by a hospital. There are others to choose from unless it is a life-threatening emergency.. So-called non-profits may have some lazy and indifferent staff members because they have little accountability. What a waste of tax dollars. This place is institutionalized mediocrity! No wonder this U-Mass Hospital has been given the very lowest Medicare rating by the USA Government. The administration should be ashamed.
