Our last experience ordering from Lalibela was a little frustrating because of slow service, so I have been searching for a new go to Ethiopian source. After reading the positive reviews on Yelp, I'm glad I went with Addis. I got a carry out order with the veggie plater, doro wot and doro tibs, which turned out to be a ton of food for $30. Service was fast and friendly and the food is as good as or better than any other place in town, and better than I've had in other cities. Some of the vegetables were greens, potatoes, cabbage, lentils, cream corn? vinto? I am not sure what the other vegetables were but I loved them! I also had a mango vinto smoothie. The vegetables were flavorful, the service was prompt and servers were delightful. There are also several dishes we hadn't tried before, including red beets (which are amazing), a smooth chickpea dish, and a fermented injera dish. I also had the mixed smoothie, which included several fruits including mango, strawberries, and peaches. All of this was $18... The owner talked to us for quite awhile about the dishes - He was incredibly welcoming and really made the experience special. Came into Addis Restaurant last week and was incredibly impressed not only by the food quality but also by the friendly service. We got the Mahbarawi platter, an assortment of beef stew, cabbage, lentils, beets and salad and enough food to feed an army. Everything on the platter was amazing, freshly prepared and a good way to try out a bunch of different dishes. My friend got the chicken sandwich, which was also huge for $6 and filled with nicely seasoned chicken, veggies and a creamy sauce. This was my first experience with Ethiopian cuisine and after eating at Addis, it most certainly will not be the last. From start to finish, our experience was phenomenal. The restaurant itself is located in a part of town I wouldn't frequent by myself.. but with a group of friends, it worked out well :). I started out with a cup of tea, which the owner recommended, and I'm so happy I took his advice. It was delicious. For those who find tea a bore, I dare you to try it and not like it. A uniquely robust and flawless combination of cardamom, ginger, cinnamon and cloves, it needed only a little bit of honey and bam! Heaven in cup. So we ordered the chicken & rice, the veggie platter, and the fish and rice and shared it between the five of us. I've never had cuisine so diverse and rich in flavor. It's was all good. Very very good. It's customary to eat with your hands (washed hands!) but if you ask nicely, they'll gladly provide you with a fork :). Their injera bread was so soft and fresh; filling and quite tasty. The veggie platter had like 6 different sides, all different and unique in flavor but equally scrumptious. Half the time I didn't know what I was eating but I didn't care; my taste buds were rejoicing with every bite. The rice and fish was SUPERB. They grill the fish in its entirety, eyeballs and all, then serve it whole. And boy, succulent doesn't even begin to cover it. It was amazing. As was the chicken, though not served whole (thank goodness!) it was juicy and crazy delicious. I'm seriously salivating now thinking about this place, so I'm going to stop. As for the food, the food is well prepared and made quick without losing quality. Depending on how spicy you like your food they can adjust the dishes. You get a good amount of food for the price. If you were a fan of Blue Nile, then this is a reasonable replacement if you're into Ethiopian cuisine. It was rather busy on a weekend night and there didn't seem to be many available parking places. The smoothie is mango with strawberry swirls. The vibe of the place is casual if a bit spartan, but it's clearly a neighborhood place for ex-pats and it was packed when we went. The vegetable combo is an essential during every visit, but there are many other specialties that should be tried. Every part of the many dishes included in the vegetable combo are perfect. The way its cooked, the spices, the injura, everything is perfection. Once you try their food, it all will make sense. Suddenly the restaurants appearance becomes irrelevant when you have a plate of food that good in front of you. The customer base being mostly African will be obvious after you taste the food. You can't find this quality anywhere else, besides an authentic African home kitchen, much less another restaurant. There exists a certain breed of restaurants that hide in the outskirts, reserving their specialties for the few that venture out of their comfort zones to taste their food. I've read about the experience, but so thankful to finally try myself. We found out, the owners like to keep the food mild to please all palates. But they are more than happy to crank up the heat to taste. That is something we definitely plan on during our next visit. Not saying the food isn't flavorful. It is amazingly flavorful as I've read and had described. But, you can tell it would go to another level with the added heat. I live how our host described each side, they each have their own "story". So, true! They may have almost the same core ingredients, but they do not taste remotely the same with each twist of spices. I cannot even describe the wonderful warmth provided by our hosts. My mom always told me "Cooking is one way I share my love for you". You definitely feel this from the hosts with pride in food and hospitality. Don't let the quaint, non-descript building put you off. The restaurant is a true family-owned experience. Every meal served on traditional spongy Ethiopian bread and eaten with yourhas been sensational. Whether it's the chicken, fish or beef served in the multi-sensory curries with vegetables on the side everything is first rate. The husband and wife owners of the restaurant provide service with sincerity - not something you see much of these days. I also like the TV set to an Ethiopian music channel. I'm a customer that is obviously not "Ethiopian" but yet the owner is so kind in explaining the food to me and constantly checks if I like the food or not. His wife (I"m sure owner as well) works in the kitchen and she and her staff make everything I've tried fantastic. Before COVID and I could eat inside me and my family would stop by and they would make us a "special platter" just to try different things. I don't know if it is actually special or not but they sure make me feel like it was made just for me and my "American" taste. Every time I go to Columbus I try to get take out. I live about 2 hours away and it is sooooooo worth it. When I get the take out I just usually get a meat dish. I can never remember the name so its become a joke to me and the owner as I explain and for some dumb reason make hand gestures. wearing a mask he doesn't recognize me :) We always have a laugh at that insane thing I do. Because ill definitely be making several trips back here I got the chicken steak and rice, sounds pretty basic right? But it wasn't, it was so aromatic and flavorful I'm sure I tasted atleast 10 different spices. Very distinct, the rice was yellow but I tasted lemon zest, curry, and saffron, the chicken and seasoned veggies had some other flavones which I'm sure are more native to their lands. They give plenty of injera as well.The zillzill tibs were also very tasty. Note--the mango juice isn't fresh, so if you're somewhat picky (living for several years in the Caribbean will do that to you), just skip it. The coffee is very, very good, however.
