On our first night in St. John's we found Adelaide oyster house. The place has a super hip vibe to it, fun music playing and a menu full of plates to share. We started with oysters of course, east coast yummies. On to fish tacos, Brussels sprouts, fried broccoli, pickled olives, guacamole, scallop dish that was amazing and some nice wines to wash it all down with. Loved it all. Great service too! read more

Very disappointing to be subjected to this irritation - I generally enjoy conversation with my dinner companions but alas nigh impossible at this establishment. There are no words to express the disappointment of trying to get into a place with your name on the list; having drinks across the street and seeing multiple tables turn while not getting a call--after calling 3 times. I had stopped trying to go as a resident but had people in town that I wanted to bring as I know it is a quality establishment but if you can't turn a 4-top in 3 hours and express no remorse for not accommodating people waiting this long just shows poor customer service. Now paying a $300 bill across the street for what I suspect is sub par. Take a reservation, seriously. read more

Incredible food, great service and super friendly atmosphere! It's a small venue and can be quite busy, so often there is a wait of 30-60 min for a table until about 8 pm when it starts thinning out slightly. I've been there twice and every food item (oysters , squid, tuna and even Brussels sprouts) were delicious. read more

This restaurant was recommended to me by a few individuals on my flight to Saint John's. They all happened to know Paul, one of the owners, but not each other. I guess he's quite a celebrity. Anyways, I checked it out, and found it to be cozy, especially on a cold, snowy, winter day. There's not much for parking, some meters, and nearby paid lots and parking garages. There's seating available at the bar, and the table. Seating is limited, so reservations are recommended, especially for larger parties. The service was excellent, there were two bartenders, a hostess, and an oyster shucker (fish monger?) all taking care of me. The food was quite tasty as well. I had the pickled squid and the fish taco. I also tried the sober island cocktail oyster. I wasn't a huge fan of the pickled squid, it was the most tender preparation that I had, and creative, but I wasn't sold on the flavor. The fish taco was excellent, and the oyster was sublime. If I had a more extensive per diem, I would have happily dropped $35 on a dozen of them. I can't wait to come back here to try other creations. read more

Have you ever been in a really old house where you felt the wood and the brick had some sort of something not physical about them. That's how I felt in Adelaide. For a new restaurant, the furniture and fixtures had story to tell. I felt fascination as soon as I walked in. I had never been in an oyster bar but now I was sitting directly in front of someone shucking these beautiful shells that had an exotic delicacy inside. I had two oysters, one from PEI and one from BC. I was nervous at first slurp but really enjoyed the flavour and surprisingly the texture. I also had the tuna taco. The flavour and appearance of the taco were so well crafted. The staff were very friendly and helpful and seemed to be genuinely happy and enjoying themselves. We went in at 5:30 without a reservation to a fairly full restaurant that clearly had tables reserved but the waitress kindly asked a single patron if she didn't mind scooting down a seat so two of us could fit in at the bar. All in all, it was an experience out of the ordinary that I really enjoyed. I would caution not to go there starving as the servings are small but flavourful. Break out of your culinary shell and try this oyster bar. read more

We didn't even get to taste their food and make a fair review. But all I can say is that this was the most embarrassing moment, a very uncomfortable moment just to have the waitress come to our table to tell me how 'sassy' I was. And walk away.... Without having to listen to my point of her not following the procedure she was enforcing fist. I forgot my picture ID at home and I only had the proof of vaccination and my credit cards, which I thought it would suffice enough ... since I would be opening my phone with my face recognition feature. And show my PDF document with my vaccination and my credit cards. So, understood the point and went home to get my ID. Once back inside the restaurant, she came to check my ID.... So I questioned if she properly checked what she was looking for: matching names on both documents she was asking for. I was furious somehow... thinking why she didn't check to match all names ... did she remember even my first name?... probably not. But she came to our table to tell me she was doing her job and that there's a fine of 500 dollars for not providing the ID and then she went on telling how sassy I was. I was in shocked and furious: we tried to get the attention of the other staff and we were completely ignored. She finally came back to our table and we asked to talk to a manager. She decided to sit next to us to have some sort of conversation. My husband tried to explain to her my point. But still hoping she would bring their manager. Again I explained to her my point and asked her why she didn't follow the procedures properly by matching names on both, the vaccination proof and the picture ID... I thought at this point now that both parties had their say we would try to have a good time and enjoy the food... well, she left ... and we were back to ground zero... we are sitting there for a few long minutes and hoping someone would come to our table. No one came so my husband stood up and went straight to her and the other staff ... she supposedly was giving us some time... some time for what???... like brats misbehaving???... we were hoping that taking to a manager would bring a solution and forget about this whole situation At this point we were in a more uncomfortable situation. Were we ever gonna be served????.... We were extremely excited for our night out. We have decided to try new great places in the city. And so far we have discovered some amazing places. But tonight was the exception, it was the most terrible time. We left this establishment feeling terribly embarrassed for the whole situation. This place was amazing!!!! Four of us were here during happy hour, corner of the bar and we had a blast! The bartenders chatted lots with us which added to the atmosphere and they were so knowledgeable about the oysters! We tried most of the oysters, they were all fantastic. Great sauce pairings, and you could watch them shuck them at the bar and check that they were good. The small plates were also excellent, I recommend the salt and pepper squid. Went during happy hour and got some fresh oysters that were delicious. Also had the tuna taco which was amazing along with the steamed dumplings which were great as well. This is a definite must stop if you are staying in St John's. The place is very limited on seating, probably 30 at the most. We got there at 450 and there were already several people waiting for it to open at 5 by 515 it was packed full. Which is also a good sign when deciding if a place is worth eating at. read more

Adelaide makes you feel like you're in Brooklyn NY not St John's NL.The decor was warm and cosy but the music was wayyyy to loud. When I asked the waitress if it could be turned it down she said "I wish". For a party of 5, we really had trouble hearing each other. If the music was softer, we would have probably stayed longer and ordered more. The owners really need to be receptive towards customers opinions. The food was really good and fresh. Small portions so definitely don't expect to have a big meal when you go there. The cocktails were also excellent! I'd go back only if I were in smaller group and probably just for cocktails. read more

The food is very good, but trying too hard. Ceviche, eg--God's gift to seafood lovers, just as it is. Does it really need to be loaded up with chili sauce, sesame seeds, and sweet potato crisps? Don't go there hungry, but the food was tasty and ambiance was trendy (there are definitely hipsters in St. John's) but it took 40 min to get even some of our food and we didn't get to eat together. Funny enough it was the olives that took the longest. The portions are small and unfortunately I was a bit hangry when we got there so the long wait and small portions didn't help my mood. I basically paid $22 for a side salad and 3 chicken wings (Korean BBQ Chicken). My friend's scallop ceviche was good but didn't come with any type of bread or chips. That being said, the Kobe beef was delicious and the beet salad was yummy. Great place to go for a drink and a snack and the couple beside us seemed really happy with their oysters :-) read more

I went to the Adelaide Oyster House, which I understand recently opened in the downtown district, during my Thanksgiving visit to St. John. It was wonderful with a cozy setting, great food and drink menu and strong service. The decor embodies that modern and clean yet comfortingly old-timey thing, with reclaimed wood and bulbs that boast their filaments through clear glass as lighting fixtures. The menu of small plates was varied- lots of seafood and asian influences- and each dish delivered on its flavor promise. I think the menu changes- this particular night we had the salt and pepper squid, korean chicken wings, pork lettuce wrap and the baked adelaide oysters. Washed down with the local brew- Quidi Vidi Iceberg. The Adelaide baked oysters were hands-down star of the show. After eating them, we resisted the urge to order more plates, simply so they would be the last thing we ate. I am having a love affair with these oysters. I like them so much i want to marry them. The service was friendly and efficient and the chef/owner (whom I naturally accosted to praise for the aforementioned oysters) was gracious at the interruption. read more

Honestly I have never tried the food here, I'm sure it's great. I attempted to go here with three friends on a Monday evening in October and was told a table would only be a short time and to give them our number and they would call us. Fast forward two and a half hours and we called back only to find out that we were "next on the list" we, needless to say cancelled the reservation without concern from the restaurant, to quote, "what's your name? We will take you off the list?". Gladly spent $300 across the road from this establishment due to their lack of customer service. If you can not accommodate just be up front. Love the food - it is truly some of the best in St. John's. However, recently I've been avoiding because it is just too loud! I love music and used to enjoy the vibe of the place. Now if I want to go somewhere to spend time with someone and talk to them, this restaurant is out of the question--because we have to yell at each other and can't even hear one another. It also sucks when I want to bring someone new to this place to try the food, but I decide against it because I don't know if we're going to have an awkward yelling match or end up having dinner with no conversation complete. read more

I love everything about this place. The ambiance is amazing, the wine selection is on point, and the food is to die for. It is a slightly pricey spot and the food is served as it's made so you likely won't be receiving all of it at once, that being said the food is so delicious that you will have to share a bite, which will make you order more and more dishes, racking up your bill even more. Despite this I was not unhappy with my bill at all because the food was just too amazing. So amazing that me, an avid seafood hater, had to try out the seafood dishes - and loved them! read more
